And taking it serious? Getting a job without a diploma and 4 or more hard years of study? Give me a break, I have studied photography and graphic design for years and know how much energy it takes to get graduate and make it. It bothers me that kids and people don't take the art of creating serious anymore.

Some posts are too rude. Most of us unknowingly say um when speaking. Very typical, juvenile YouTube responses that have nothing to do with the content, but try to standout or be cool. Such things can be easily fixed: Edit them out during the cutaways. If the lips dont move too much while on camera, some of those can be edited out.

Duh, we already know the graphic design field is wide and that there's a lot of jobs. I thought to hear something I didn't know yet. Plus bgarbacz you're so rght. I also studied for years, believing I needed that paper. thats not always the case. Employers want both the degree and the talent. The bigger companys want a BFA in graphic design and they want to see a portfolio with at lest 12-15 pics of work in it. It is true and kid can learn the software, but without the degree its very hard to get your foot in the door.

If you had an artist without diploma and one with, applying for a job and the portfolio of the one without paper is better, he would be hired in some cases. When I first opened my ad agency in Las Vegas, there were only a hand-full of professional designers in town. That was back in 1977. We were paid well for our services because we had the THIRD EYE. We looked at everything in a different light then most people. We created with our over abundance of imagination. We created results for our clients.
Today we've got over a thousand so called Graphic Designers out of work in Las Vegas. I wonder why.
Take any kid with no artistic abilities and teach him Photoshop & InDesign and you've got a Graphic Artist.
In my 30+ years in the business pre computers, I studied fine arts as a kid. Learned how to draw freehand, paint, photography and visited as many museums as possible. Plus my father was a fine illustrator and that ended up in my DNA.
The most useful program from adobe that can be the starting point for all of the other adobe programs is Adobe illustrator.
It is the core program that deals with all of the digital design / image making concepts...Typography, design, layout, illustration, web production, flash, and even 3d(bezier curves are essential 3d tools!!!)
learn this program and the others follow very easily.
Top tip: go to a proper art school then move to London or Berlin or Paris or Barcelona or NYC. I've got a BA(Hons) and have been working in design ever since. There are loads if jobs IF YOU'RE GOOD.

JCragan. Graphic design is all over the place. Logos, collateral design, advertisement, info graphics, packaging, exhibit design, editorial, web and much more. Plus people that study graphic design and programming/coding have way better websites than if you were just to know programming and coding.

When's the last time you flipped through a sears catalog? .. The internet... Websites; this is the way people are doing it, and will continue to do so in the future. Save yourself 5 years of your life and start programing and coding.

uhhh not exactly, just saying it's in our nature to want new things. It's our materialistic personalities that urges us to go out and buy a mac, and of course because it's also in our nature to want the best of the best. Any ol PC will do for graphics work, but of course, a mac would be better.

apparently mac's are better than pc's in terms of artistic and design capabilities or so my professor told me. also a particular art and design college in my area requires students to buy a mac laptop *shrugs*

absolute bullshit - The cost for a PC that handles my Photoshop and 3D work would be 1000$ - An equivalent Mac would be the cheapest Mac Pro and it's 3600$ over here in Sweden. Oh, but the PC doesn't have a shiny aluminum case, you say! Oh, fine, make it 1050$ for the PC then and then it includes an upgrade from a discrete case to an aluminum case.
Macs have software already on them, for graphic design use. It comes with their OS. Although it's a little more expensive, and you would have to learn the mac OS, many (not as technical) people find it very useful. There does not seem to be as much "back end" work with their graphics software. It is good to know both platforms. - however at the same time, children can get on these mac programs and edit video/images. So... that's why PC people laugh at them.

First of all.... write down everything you want to say.
then read it again closely and edit it until it everything makes sense and flows as a coherent list of important ideas.
then write this important list on big white cards.
then practice reading the list aloud.
practice enunciating and actively improvising the verbal delivery so it begins to sound like a conversation and not an awkward nervous speech.
This is important if you expect the audience to understand and believe you.

uhhh not exactly, just saying it's in our nature to want new things. It's our materialistic personalities that urges us to go out and buy a mac, and of course because it's also in our nature to want the best of the best. Any ol PC will do for graphics work, but of course, a mac would be better.

A tablet allows you to have more control over your freehand drawings. If that's what you plan on doing I would definitely go with a tablet.

apparently mac's are better than pc's in terms of artistic and design capabilities or so my professor told me. also a particular art and design college in my area requires students to buy a mac laptop *shrugs*
could be the same for other art institutions as well

absolute bullshit - The cost for a PC that handles my Photoshop and 3D work would be 1000$ - An equivalent Mac would be the cheapest Mac Pro and it's 3600$ over here in Sweden. Oh, but the PC doesn't have a shiny aluminum case, you say! Oh, fine, make it 1050$ for the PC then and then it includes an upgrade from a discrete case to an aluminum case.

Macs have software already on them, for graphic design use. It comes with their OS. Although it's a little more expensive, and you would have to learn the mac OS, many (not as technical) people find it very useful. There does not seem to be as much "back end" work with their graphics software. It is good to know both platforms. - however at the same time, children can get on these mac programs and edit video/images. So... that's why PC people laugh at them.
