@krumpll Mine never bit me. I have 2 Marshall Farm ferrets and adopted one from a private breeder. They play with their mouths and claws (which need to be trimmed), but like I said, I've never been bitten and I've had mine for 2 years.
My roommate's ferret bit me in my thumb and drew blood but that's when we first got him. He was inside my bed and I needed him out of there cause I didn't want the springs or anything hurting him while I moved while sleeping, etc and my bed is old. He had previous owners and don't know anything about them. He is more calmer now but play nips and Im training him to stop that behaviour.
Do all Ferrets bite, or do you have to train them not to? because my mom said that they bite alot, she had a freind that got boten by her ferrt but i think thats a lie!
@MidnightBlueMoon61 YES ferrets bite ALOT..but i swear to you it doesnt hurt.may look like it would with there dagger teeth but there just playing.and if you have braclets on,especially something shinny, they love to bite at it.:)
When it comes to biting, ferrets are like dogs. They use their mouths like we use our hands; to grab things and play. Ferrets will put their mouths on people, but, much like dogs, MOST won't ever bite down. They won't cause you pain, or leave a mark. They will NOT draw blood, so in that respect they are much safer than a cat with claws. HOWEVER, just like dogs, there are a few ferrets who really do bite: A ferret might bite if she is being hurt, or if she has been abused in the past.
(continued from above) A ferret might bite if she is never handled. Worse, uneducated owners may even accidentally train her to bite! For example, a owner might teach a ferret that the way to tell him she wants to be put down is to bite. Or, when she is learning how roughly humans like to play, he might reenforce mouthing too hard with fun interactions until he has shaped biting. Be aware that some owners may lie when asked if their pet bites. Lastly, NEVER leave a baby to play with ANY pet.
I doubt ALL pets would do harm to a baby. I'd trust any house cat with my baby any day. I've never heard of cats going berserk and killing a baby lol.
@Five500Hundred Oh goodness no! I A ferret would never kill a baby. But would you leave a baby to play with a cat or dog? Babies learn about their world by grabbing things and, most often, trying to put those things in their mouths. Ferrets are simply NOT appropriate baby toys. This really shouldn't have to be said, but people possess a broad range of forethought and judgement. It's best not to set up our furry friends to fail in a situation they don't have experience with.
@MidnightBlueMoon61 Ferrets usually bite more when they're young and eventually grow out of it as long as they get some interaction and love that isn't too rough.
@MidnightBlueMoon61 no it depends on how you play with them(if you play ruff with you they play bite but the only time they will rally bite you and draw blood is if you hit them hard, grab their tail, or mess with them while their eating
@MidnightBlueMoon61 not all ferrets bite. Usually ferrets that have been abused, or used for illegal fighting will bite. Sometimes ferrets will bite playing around and not realizing that they are hurting us. Some kits bite, but can easily be trained out of biting with some bitter apple spray. Ferrets may also bit because they do not like loud noises like musical instruments (I found out the hard way) or if you are hurting them.
@AgentTasmania Ferrets are like cats in many ways, or really, more like perpetual kittens with a bit of puppy thrown in. They have loads of personality and are very playful. More exotic and interesting? Maybe; I've met some pretty interesting cats though! I think they are more trainable and more interested in human interaction than many cats. They are far more portable, and I love that. Much like dogs, they love car rides and adventures. Unlike cats, most ferrets love meeting new people.
@AgentTasmania Take into account that ferrets, while amazing, are MUCH MORE difficult to take care of than a dog. I used to have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 ferrets. I LOVED my ferrets. But they were much more problem, since the are very curious, they tend to get into a lot problems.
My ferrets died of cancer.....it's normal in them. Also, you have to take them out of their cage EVERY SINGLE DAY. And clean them up twice a day. If you really are able to do this, have a ferret!
i av 2 female ferrets n recently introduced them 2 my partners 2 boxer dogs they gtt on gr8 n th dogs wer amazed by them al 4 tails were waggin lol If neythin th dogs wer mre at risk frm bubble n squeak lol great pets love my kisses frm bubble n squeak is jsta mini detective she finds nethin n everythin n can climb absolutely everywhere if ur thinkin bout getin them stop thinkin n go get um
@breefreesmoogs I'm flattered by your faith in my training, but my secret has always been to let her out of her cage nearly all the time. I'd encourage her to burn off as much energy through play as possible before trying to coax concentration out of her. I'd start a training session when SHE showed interest. When she'd try to get into her treat container, or when she'd do her tricks on her own, I'd grab my clicker.
@Superlou4000 That depends on the dog. Dogs who were bred to hunt small animals can unexpectedly attack ferrets. Dogs such as dachshund and any kind of terrier can go from playing to breaking a ferret's back in an instant. Any dog who shakes his toys is a danger. Also, a ferret, if her life is threatened, can fight back; either pet could end up dead. But, I've seen two large black labs who lived with ferrets and would be very gentle and careful with them.
@Superlou4000 Have to agree with Ichi on this one, I have three ferrets and a 12 year old shih tzu, they were just introduced about a year ago and get along just fine. The ferrets also get along fantastically with my neighbors two german shepards and his pitbull mix. All a matter of training and the dogs personality.
@Superlou4000 Also dogs and ferrets that grew up together are more likely to get along or even become friends. Anyway, I'd never combine a hound and a ferret.
@Superlou4000 it depends on the dog. i had 2 ferrets and 2 collies and they were completely at home with each other. It was really funny , they would actually just all cuddle in and sleep together sometimes XD

@mr16burgtj Grey learned everything with clicker training techniques. I had read Karen Pryor's book, "Lads Before the Wind", and adapted her methods. There are lots of great clicker training books on the market now. The key is to find a treat your student REALLY likes. Grey loved a certain fish oil based vitamin supplement, and any bit of food coated with it.
lololol. thank you so much for posting the vid. this is so ridiculously cute. i want a ferret really bad but im not sure where to get one in santa cruz, ca -_______-
i just adopted a ferret with my dad at the humane society
and he doesnt play and hes not hyper, And my dog ((chihuahua)) likes to play and all the ferret does is ignore him lol. We think he is about 2-3years old
we dont kno for sure. But why isnt he playing or being active? he eats, drinks and use the bathroom like a normal ferret would usally do. My dad thinks somethings wrong but i think hes just a independent ferret. heellpp pleasee
@angel10450 A ferret who doesn't play needs to see a vet, no question about that. Playing is what ferrets live for. Now, ferret DO sleep a lot, up to 20 hours a day, be aware of that. Please take him to a vet. No one on the internet can tell you what is wrong without examining him and only a vet will be able to tell you for sure.
@Ichijojichan we have to for sure already cuz we just adopted him. He been playing more than before. And he only plays with boxes, Bags, and stuff he plays with on his own. He doesnt play with anything when we try to play with him. He is very friendly. He eats normally. The humane society said theres nothing wrong with him that they know of cuz he acts normal. But idk y. Like u said we shukld take him to the vet (wich we are and have to)
he's gotta be useing a clicker(to get ferrets attention) with a treat that the ferret likes...like ferrettone...their favorite..(u can get at most pet stores) or any type of sweet they like.same as training a dog.ferrets r just as smart as dogs.
aahhhh telll meee i wanna learn mine how to rolll but they are like hyperactivee xd they cant stay stl for a moment only if thy're really tired and then they kinda sleep, how did u train The little one?
aww thats cute i have 4 ferrets Brodii,Abe,Bandit and Hershys Brodii steals paper towels and toilet paper lol she stuffs them in a cabnet and sleeps with them ALL day lol Brodii and Hershys are my ferrets Abe is my brothers and Bandit is my moms and her boy friends but there all very funny and Bandit is the crazyest lol
I got mine for 125$ In Leduc Alberta, then got two more for 200$ in Edmonton Alberta :) So Far these guys have put me out almost 500$ In a week But I love them to peices. Mine don't know any tricks but I like them the way they are haha Dumb and Adorable
@W88Angel Well, try doing lots of very short sessions through out the day, whenever your fuzzy acts bored. If you can get in three to five clicks, that's a good session for a ferret.
I would say a ferret goes to the bathroom on average 5-6 times a day. I haven't counted though and it varies depending on a some things of course. I'd say at minimum three poops. They go a lot. I would say that litter/clean up supplies are the biggest expense with them, aside from vet bills.
I cleaned my ferrets litter box yesterday and there looks to be about 6 or 7 poops. The higher the amount of protein in their food, the less they poop usually. When I got my ferret, her first owners were feeding her cat food, so I switched to 8 in 1 ferret kibble and her poops became more firm, less stinky, and she poops less. Good food = less poop.
Ferrets go to toilet in a corner, so make sure you put something in all corners except one - that should encourage it to go in a particular corner. Things you can use to 'block' corners are a ferret tower, large toys, etc. Food passes them pretty quickly so put food and water bowls close to the corner you want them to do their business in. Mine doesn't like backing into a litter tray, but goes in the same corner every time so I just put sheets of newspaper down and change it 3 times a day.
i had two ferrets and if u take care of them the right way and give them dust baths twice a week there won't be a smell. the dust bath is used for chinchillas and works just as well for ferrets, it also keeps their coats soft and healthy
You give very sound advice, one point is to make certain one is feeding their Ferret(s) the best quality food possible. A food high in protein will cut down on the frequency of poops as they absorb the nutrients more fully and therefore eat less volume. NEVER feed a Ferret Kitten Chow or any cat food, the crude protein levels are too low and the fiber content is too high. They cannot process much fiber. Grey is a wonderful, healthy Fuzzle, makes me miss mine very much. :)
@Flap999 hmm I was told to use a high-protein kitten food, the expensive sciency sort, and it listed a number related to how much protein was in it and it had to be over a certain number (which I forget now). it's been ages since I had him though, I'll do more research when I can actually own a pet again (darn apartment rules)... but now that you mention it, he did seem to go to the bathroom an awful lot and he had weight problems even after being put on a very restricted diet.
i did not have to train my ferret to use the box but when he was little he could not make it all the way to the box in the botom of the cage and would poop on the levle he was on and out the cage lol. now he is a 100 % pooper oh and if you dont want boxes every were puppy pads in the corners of the room work very well
I LIKE the way ferrets smell; a light musky smell, much better than a dog or most rodents. Their poop does smell though, and they poop every couple of hours at least. You must keep a ferret's cage very clean. They can be trained to litter boxes with clicker training, but there must be a litter box in every room a ferret plays in. If the box is too far away she won't make it. Boys have a stronger smell than girls. Get several beds so you can change them daily. Avoid baths. Clean ears.
Some do like water, if it is warm enough, they like it a bit warmer than people do. But washing a ferret washes away her natural oils, which stimulates her to make more oils, which causes an unnaturally strong funk. A bath is okay if your ferret gets into something, ie she digs through the garbage, but keep them to a minimum. And NEVER use Fabreeze or similar products on a ferret or in her environment, it could hurt your ferret.
Giving a ferret a bath more than once a month dries their skin out and is not good for them. Ferrets are automatically descented and thus do not smell unless something makes them that was just as a dog or cat. And in my opinion a dog tends to smell more than a ferret, specially after they have been in the water.
I agree, my Ferrets smelled good to me, they had an earthy smell I found comforting. I used to irritate them kissing their little pointy snouts though. :) Went through lots of bedding, did laundry 4 times a week just keeping their snuggle sacks clean.
It helps a lot to keep their cages very clean. Scoop poop as it happens and change the whole box out once per day. Put in clean bedding daily. Gently clean the ferret's ears as needed. Their box is their toilet, their bedding is like their clothes. Imagine how much we would stink if we could only flush our toilet once every two or three days, and had to wear the same clothes for weeks at a time. Also, feed high quality food to reduce the amount of poop.
@Ichijojichan I never could get mine to potty train for anything (and he would do a lot of it right outside the box in his cage like he knew perfectly well, the little brat) so I had to bathe him once a week or it'd get awful. I am also thinking now that he was on the wrong kind of food (sigh, pet store advice fail). Potty-wise, as I understand it, some ferrets will "get" things and some just won't. Also, some like water and some hate it (as mine did, ow lol).
@Ichijojichan excellent advice! i'd like to add however, that it's important to remember that these are meant to be wild animals, and should be kept locked up in a cage as little as possible. imagine how boring it would be to spend your whole life in your bedroom (no phone or internet access!).
@Ichijojichan i have 4 in one cage. here's the trick. i bought thick painter plastic and cut a strip big enough to line the entire bottom of the cage. then i bought aspen bedding and lined the entire bottom of it. (pretty thickly) and it took them a few days to realize it wasn't there for them to play in, but to pee and poop. they got the hang of it, and now used properly it lasts 2-3 weeks, which is way longer than the newspaper (every other day) cont...
@Ichijojichan AND the plus is there is no smell. and when it needs to be changed, simply life the cage off the bottom, and pull the plastic out. if they have scratched at the plastic, then you may have to do a quick spray and cleaning of the bottom and then let it dry (so you dont make it moldy under the new plastic) it makes life much easier, especially if you have multiples...
I've trained one, and completely let my other one alone. He still plays the floor shark and it's really funny to watch my trained ferret try to keep me safe from the renegade ferret.
@Suqatish What an interesting experiment! Have you noticed any other differences in behavior, either between the two or in the trained ferret with respect to before and after training?
That, my friend, is a clicker, the secret of fun and easy training. The clicker tells her "Good job! You're going to get a treat for that!" at precisely the right time.
Aw, your ferret is cute, ferrets14. He looks young. First just get him to pay attention by finding out what he REALLY likes for treats. Then you might try using a quieter sound, either by clicking with your tongue or using a quieter clicker. Some clickers have multiple volume settings.
Owww, cute cute cute!!! ♥

mr16burgtj 1 year ago
@mr16burgtj Grey learned everything with clicker training techniques. I had read Karen Pryor's book, "Lads Before the Wind", and adapted her methods. There are lots of great clicker training books on the market now. The key is to find a treat your student REALLY likes. Grey loved a certain fish oil based vitamin supplement, and any bit of food coated with it.

Hi ur ferret are so cute! hes so cool. (:
i just adopted a ferret with my dad at the humane society
and he doesnt play and hes not hyper, And my dog ((chihuahua)) likes to play and all the ferret does is ignore him lol. We think he is about 2-3years old
we dont kno for sure. But why isnt he playing or being active? he eats, drinks and use the bathroom like a normal ferret would usally do. My dad thinks somethings wrong but i think hes just a independent ferret. heellpp pleasee
angel10450 1 year ago

W88Angel 2 years ago 19
@W88Angel Well, try doing lots of very short sessions through out the day, whenever your fuzzy acts bored. If you can get in three to five clicks, that's a good session for a ferret.
Ichijojichan 2 years ago
I would say a ferret goes to the bathroom on average 5-6 times a day. I haven't counted though and it varies depending on a some things of course. I'd say at minimum three poops. They go a lot. I would say that litter/clean up supplies are the biggest expense with them, aside from vet bills.

weirdo21797 2 years ago
I cleaned my ferrets litter box yesterday and there looks to be about 6 or 7 poops. The higher the amount of protein in their food, the less they poop usually. When I got my ferret, her first owners were feeding her cat food, so I switched to 8 in 1 ferret kibble and her poops became more firm, less stinky, and she poops less. Good food = less poop.

HOW DO U TRAIN A FERRET TO STAY STILL..
cheyann7 2 years ago 2
Ferrets go to toilet in a corner, so make sure you put something in all corners except one - that should encourage it to go in a particular corner. Things you can use to 'block' corners are a ferret tower, large toys, etc. Food passes them pretty quickly so put food and water bowls close to the corner you want them to do their business in. Mine doesn't like backing into a litter tray, but goes in the same corner every time so I just put sheets of newspaper down and change it 3 times a day.

Any advice for me. I'm getting one soon. and i hope to keep it smelling clean how do i do this. I can't go out much so i need simple stuff and cheap
germany314 2 years ago
i had two ferrets and if u take care of them the right way and give them dust baths twice a week there won't be a smell. the dust bath is used for chinchillas and works just as well for ferrets, it also keeps their coats soft and healthy
cybergriff180 2 years ago
You give very sound advice, one point is to make certain one is feeding their Ferret(s) the best quality food possible. A food high in protein will cut down on the frequency of poops as they absorb the nutrients more fully and therefore eat less volume. NEVER feed a Ferret Kitten Chow or any cat food, the crude protein levels are too low and the fiber content is too high. They cannot process much fiber. Grey is a wonderful, healthy Fuzzle, makes me miss mine very much. :)
Flap999 2 years ago
@Flap999 hmm I was told to use a high-protein kitten food, the expensive sciency sort, and it listed a number related to how much protein was in it and it had to be over a certain number (which I forget now). it's been ages since I had him though, I'll do more research when I can actually own a pet again (darn apartment rules)... but now that you mention it, he did seem to go to the bathroom an awful lot and he had weight problems even after being put on a very restricted diet.
tirsden 2 years ago
i did not have to train my ferret to use the box but when he was little he could not make it all the way to the box in the botom of the cage and would poop on the levle he was on and out the cage lol. now he is a 100 % pooper oh and if you dont want boxes every were puppy pads in the corners of the room work very well

Is it hard to teach ferret to not pee and poo everywhere?
Do they smell that bad?? i want one :(
voli78 2 years ago
I LIKE the way ferrets smell; a light musky smell, much better than a dog or most rodents. Their poop does smell though, and they poop every couple of hours at least. You must keep a ferret's cage very clean. They can be trained to litter boxes with clicker training, but there must be a litter box in every room a ferret plays in. If the box is too far away she won't make it. Boys have a stronger smell than girls. Get several beds so you can change them daily. Avoid baths. Clean ears.
Ichijojichan 2 years ago
Avoird baths??i thought they like water o.o and ur right dog smell but u can give them a bath xD
voli78 2 years ago
Some do like water, if it is warm enough, they like it a bit warmer than people do. But washing a ferret washes away her natural oils, which stimulates her to make more oils, which causes an unnaturally strong funk. A bath is okay if your ferret gets into something, ie she digs through the garbage, but keep them to a minimum. And NEVER use Fabreeze or similar products on a ferret or in her environment, it could hurt your ferret.
Ichijojichan 2 years ago
@Ichijojichan i personally find that a bath once a week with a baby shampoo does the trick nicely
luccaskunk 1 year ago
@voli78
Giving a ferret a bath more than once a month dries their skin out and is not good for them. Ferrets are automatically descented and thus do not smell unless something makes them that was just as a dog or cat. And in my opinion a dog tends to smell more than a ferret, specially after they have been in the water.
TheDeadImmortals 1 year ago
I agree, my Ferrets smelled good to me, they had an earthy smell I found comforting. I used to irritate them kissing their little pointy snouts though. :) Went through lots of bedding, did laundry 4 times a week just keeping their snuggle sacks clean.
Flap999 2 years ago
Yeah, I've had two and they smell really bad....you can clean and clean their cage but they smell and will smell up the whole room their cage is in!!
BobbertLexus 2 years ago
It helps a lot to keep their cages very clean. Scoop poop as it happens and change the whole box out once per day. Put in clean bedding daily. Gently clean the ferret's ears as needed. Their box is their toilet, their bedding is like their clothes. Imagine how much we would stink if we could only flush our toilet once every two or three days, and had to wear the same clothes for weeks at a time. Also, feed high quality food to reduce the amount of poop.
Ichijojichan 2 years ago 2
@Ichijojichan I never could get mine to potty train for anything (and he would do a lot of it right outside the box in his cage like he knew perfectly well, the little brat) so I had to bathe him once a week or it'd get awful. I am also thinking now that he was on the wrong kind of food (sigh, pet store advice fail). Potty-wise, as I understand it, some ferrets will "get" things and some just won't. Also, some like water and some hate it (as mine did, ow lol).
tirsden 2 years ago
@Ichijojichan excellent advice! i'd like to add however, that it's important to remember that these are meant to be wild animals, and should be kept locked up in a cage as little as possible. imagine how boring it would be to spend your whole life in your bedroom (no phone or internet access!).
hollleee 1 year ago
@Ichijojichan i have 4 in one cage. here's the trick. i bought thick painter plastic and cut a strip big enough to line the entire bottom of the cage. then i bought aspen bedding and lined the entire bottom of it. (pretty thickly) and it took them a few days to realize it wasn't there for them to play in, but to pee and poop. they got the hang of it, and now used properly it lasts 2-3 weeks, which is way longer than the newspaper (every other day) cont...
melaughnot2often 1 year ago
@Ichijojichan AND the plus is there is no smell. and when it needs to be changed, simply life the cage off the bottom, and pull the plastic out. if they have scratched at the plastic, then you may have to do a quick spray and cleaning of the bottom and then let it dry (so you dont make it moldy under the new plastic) it makes life much easier, especially if you have multiples...

Aw, your ferret is cute, ferrets14. He looks young. First just get him to pay attention by finding out what he REALLY likes for treats. Then you might try using a quieter sound, either by clicking with your tongue or using a quieter clicker. Some clickers have multiple volume settings.
