  • i get a lot of dead air in the back round when i have the gain and output as high as yours.. does anybody know why that would be?

  • you can get one of these at hello music daught calm right now for $1800. I wish I had the dough.

  • Good, but you didn't explain the High-Q and Frequency buttons...which is what I watched the vid for...lol!

  • @LudwigVonSpeedking Here you go: Hi-Q makes the boost or cut narrower (affects less frequencies around the selected frequency) and Frequency X10 button multiplies the frequency selection by 10, so what was 100 hz becomes 1000hz etc. It's just a way of giving you a wider range of frequencies to work with.

  • hello. Can i use the same settings for a behringer b 2 pro?

  • @fotopata Each piece of gear has it's sweet spot... I don't know the B2 so you'll have to do some experimentation

  • @jephthastudios Thanks ! :)

  • Any chance to test the new API THE CHANNEL STRIP!??!

    I love your videos.

    Best regards!

  • @stratosphere21 I'm not a dealer, so I don't have access to the latest stuff. I can only get what I can talk others into lending me, or occasionally I'll do repairs on gear and can test it then.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Outstanding demo!

  • CheckCheckCheckCheck

  • The mic is an older AKG 414 EB

  • what mic are you using?

  • I'm in love.

  • added to favorites

  • i notice your pre amp gain knob is all the way up. when i do that i a lot of air in the back round and i just changed my tubes too

  • Can you use this to get good depth out of one lead vocal, such as Big Sean and Drakes vocals. You can look up big seans memories part 2 for reference, his first words and most of his song u can really hear it. Im trying to get a nice loud crisp vocal with depth like that and i know this is in a lot of studios

  • This is the best VT 737 demo I've ever seen

  • my god, what camera are u using to capture that picture? its perfect!

  • @Equestional Nikon D300s

  • If you find that the gain is all the way up, you can press Hi Gain to give you more. I was using an older AKG 414 microphone with a low output which needed more gain. As long as you're not hearing distortion it's fine.

  • hey, thanks for this vid, really helps, i noticed that you had the high gain button on through the video, is it important to have that on while tracking vocals or is it more of a line in thing,, reason being, when i track all my vocals, my input is very low, and i try and boost it up on the apogee line in, with high gain button off,, am i doing somthing wrong?.

  • Thank u so much!

  • What would be good settings for voice-over work?

  • @CarlMelius You know it really depends on the voice... in general I'd say that a little more 3K than you think and a little less low end than you think!

  • Ur the fuckin man bro... B)

  • This video is really great! Thanks for posting. I have the Avalon VT 737 sp and I have a vocal session with a female Gospel artist and she really has a powerful voice. What settings would you suggest for a voice like that?

  • @whizkidd4ever Most of the time I'll turn EQ off and PAD on, and maybe let the compressor do 2-3db of gain reduction at 3:1, slow attack fast release. With an experienced powerful singer I might turn the compressor off too. So much depends on the singer though, you really need to adjust during the warmup pass or leave EQ and comp off if you're not sure you'd making things better.

  • How do you connect it to your computer?

  • @pavmx703 You need an audio interface, such as M-Audio Fastrack or Avid MBox.

  • fuckin good tutorial

  • Great video!!-- wat type of camera are u using .. The quality is a beast !

  • @nussoboy Nikon D300s

  • @jephthastudios This shouldn't cost much! It's a great machine!

  • I know its mostly different for every voice, but what settings would you suggest for a hip hop vocal the likes of kanye, wayne, or drake. Artists who generally have just one main vocal track for their verses?

PS. Just looking for an estimate, i know they use certain equipment

  • @MrJOEYGIOVANNI Take a look at the settings I'm using at the end of this video... that might be a good starting point for the type of music you're working on.

The mic and voice will make a big difference though, you'll certainly have to adjust to taste.

  • @jephthastudios Thanks really appreciate it....just one more question...what are your thoughts on the Universal Audio LA-610 on vocals for the same purpose?

  • @MrJOEYGIOVANNI The LA-610 is a great preamp. However the 737 and the 610 couldn't be more different in sound for preamps using tubes... the 737 is crisp and clear while the 610 is fat and warm. You can modify both with EQ, but the basic character of the preamps is different. You have to listen to stuff you're recording and decide if fat or crisp is your preference.

  • @jephthastudios thanks really appreciate it

  • ok so i have the m5 avalon. the mic pre.

i need a new audio interface (usb box) what should i get that is best.

im trying to run a baby blue mic threw it / nueman

  • @WeeklyGameFame How about an MBox, or Fast Track Ultra, or RME FireFace UC?

  • thx for this helpful tutorial

  • what condenser mic do you think would go good with the that preamp?

  • @1djblizz Well, I think matching your voice is most important. But in general this preamp emphasizes the highs and is a little boring in the midrange, so I'd choose a mic that is the opposite. The rappers seem to like the U87, which is big on mids and a little light on highs so that's a good match IMO. I'm using a C414 in the video, but I have a really boxy voice so the 414's "scooped" sound is good for me. It is also a little noisy with high gain so I'd skip low output mics like ribbons.

  • You said "Buy it!", sounds like so easy. I couldn't afford one myself yet, it's funny to me the way you say it. :)

  • @domainzz I understand... It's a lot of money for a mic preamp if you're not using it as a tool to make a living. I think a new guitar or keyboard for the same amount of $ brings a lot more happiness! But for some reason I'm fascinated by the subtleties of sound quality so here I am...

  • @jephthastudios Yeah... I heard a lot of good things about avalon micpre and compressor I'll get one for myself someday, don't know when... but right now i'm still playing with UA LA610. Thnx for your reply...

  • thx for the test

  • nice ! well done, u showed pretty much everything

  • wow man,, you have a perfect video demo.. you seems very sophisticated !

    thanks for sharing ;)

  • I'm sorry, ppl hate on it so much at gearslutz, but this pre is SICK... I've absolutely GOT to get 1 of these, used or new, I don't care, IM GETTING ONE lol

  • hi can you tell how should i set my akg 414 for vocals???

  • @sparkplugblog Every voice is different, but if you watch the video in HD you should see my settings for the 414 I'm using at the end of the video. You could start there and adjust, I think the 414 + 737 combo is a good one.

  • @sparkplugblog no i meant the switches on the microphone?

  • @sparkplugblog Oh sorry! I like it set to hypercardiod (looks like a mushroom), no bass rolloff or pad. The bass rolloff can be nice for some singers though.

  • @sparkplugblog thanks alot

  • thanks for this video!. im curious on how you get that clean sound, avalon use to do some noise and mostlyt with preamp gain up..thanks !

  • @balhedz The noise goes up when you have soft sources. I was speaking fairly close to a sensitive mic, so the noise level was acceptable. If I was using a low sensitivity mic (Shure SM57, Sennhesier 421, etc.) you would probably hear some noise. It would probably be better to use a solid state (non-tube) preamp for the really quiet stuff.

  • Tnx for the video

  • Use either a USB or Firewire interface to connect to your Macbook Pro. Mic > Preamp > Interface > Macbook.

  • I have a 15" Macbook Pro what would I need to connect this to my Macbook?

  • @REDHOODTV You'll need some sort of audio interface with a balanced line input, and then a cable to connect the two. Some interfaces that would work include MBox 2, RME 400, Presonus Firebox, etc.

I guess if you were really keeping it simple you could do it with just a cable: XLRF to 1/8" TRS like this one:

    Hosa XVS-101F

  • @jephthastudios Thanks, I appreciate the fast response... right now I have a M-Audio Profire 610 & Pro Tools M-Powered 8, this should do the job right?

  • @REDHOODTV The other Hosa cable might not work... try this one instead Hosa XVM105M. It's always a little iffy going from balanced XLR to mono unbalanced inputs. One of those cables should work however, and they are cheap enough that you could just buy both.

  • @REDHOODTV That should work! Get a XLR female-to- TRS male cable, plug into line inputs 3 or 4 on the back of the ProFire and you're rockin!

  • @jephthastudios Thanks man, I truly appreciate it!

  • I would get an apogee Duet

  • Thanks for your presentation.

Can i use that preamp with my RME 400 ?If yes which device should come first?I mean should i plug my instrument on Avalon or RME?

  • Mic or Instrument > Avalon > one of the balance line inputs on the RME 400 (5-8 I think). You'll need an XLR female to TRS male cable to go from the Avalon to the RME. That's it!

  • @jephthastudios

    Thank you for your help:)

  • that was an excellent demo! i was able to hear everything, AFTER changing the video quality to 480p haha i really want one of these. i just saw it in the studio of a new band that im working with and i am dieing to check it out. i would just love to get one of these for myself, but I do live so its kinda pointless besides the fact that this thing is just awesome haha

  • Great demo, great professionalism, great camera! Great job! If you demo more products I'll be sure to subscribe! You should add a Intro splash! You're born for this!

  • Thx, really great!! I was just looking for a demo like this!!

Could you tell me how far you were away from the mic while recording it?

  • Excellent demo. I would love to have one of these in my studio.

  • @jawsrock1 Thanks!!!

  • Endlich mal einer, der was von dem Teil versteht...., scheint voll der Kracher zu sein :-)

  • I don't know much about Austrian wine, but it appears that Kracher is a good one so I'll take that as a complement ;)

  • Do you have to set all the knobs to how you want it to sound before recording audio into pro tools, or can you set it at any range (compressor, EQ, Preamp) and fix it later?

  • Yep, aim for the final mix settings as best you can during recording. I don't like to fix int the mix, I'd rather make it even better instead!

  • This hardware is increible!! and price aprox $ 3,000.00

  • Thanks Jeptha studios! That was a real articulate review. Good for the ears.

I especially liked how the eq still sounds warm even when you boosted. And the compressor is quite warm as well. In fact the whole unit itself sounds VERY warm. A plus in this digital age.

  • Oh, I see

  • 1:15 32k?? i doubt it... humans only hear up to 20k....

  • True. The boost is probably centered at 32k, but the side effects of the boost extend down to heaeable range.

  • Awesome review...

  • Thanks a bunch on the vid....but what kind of camera you are using......dayum that shit is tight

  • Nikon D300s

  • best review i have seen on youtbe about channelstrips, keep going on. more of this! :)

  • Your the man!! Thank you again for the tips and as usual, you were dead on with your recommendations!! I hope I'm not bothering you but I sincerely appreciate it. Keep up the great vids!!!!

  • at least a tutorial wich is clear and useful!

    thanks man!

  • Really appreciate this video, extremely helpful to me as I record my vocals. Great demonstration!

  • Avalon is most over-rated preamp ever...

Great River, Neve, Focusrite (vintage models) > AVALON...

  • I think the 3 pre's you mention there are thick/fat/harmonic pre's that add a little girth to everything. The Avalon is the opposite- it adds a little sparkle to everything, which is not what you expect from tubes. I think it makes a great VO sound for YouTube videos, for example - my voice is nothing special but it sounds decent to me through the Avalon.

I've got some Neve videos coming, stay tuned!

  • its because for the price, it gets pretty close to neve etc.

  • Hello, thanks for showing the video. Do you regard that compressor as pretty clean and transparent?

  • Definitely clean and well behaved. It's tough to make it spank!

  • Cool video on the VT737 sp

    Thank you.

  • Great video, very cool! Thank you for shareing that. This may sound like a dumb question but if you were recording a female vocalist reminiscent of Christina aqueilera's tone and range and you had the TLM-103 and or the MXL Genesis and the Avalon 737, what setting's might you try on the Avalon? Would really appreciate any advice!

  • Well of course the sound of the vocalist is going to determine most of what you'll do... on female vocals I often found myself with compressor attack=10 o'clock, release = fast, ratio 3:1 Threshold set so the meter just moves on the loudest part of the song. EQ: High pass on, freq=85, lo mid+3 @350 hiq on, hi mid +3@2k8 hiq off, trebble +6@32k EQ AFTER compressor.

  • @jephthastudios

Thank you again for the helpful settings you passed along, it worked out really well, I really appreciate it. I'm not much of an engineer as you can tell, I'm more of a songwriter. I unfortunately have to record another session with a Rock male vocalist reminiscent of Daughtry/Nickelback. What settings would you use on the Avalon for that type of vocalist? Any tips would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you again for your time and wisdom!!

  • You know, those kind of vocals seem to sound good with flat EQ to me... I'd try the TLM-103 with no EQ, and then keep the compressor settings the same as above but maybe lower the attack to 8 o'clock, and adjust the threshold to show 3-6db of gain reduction on the loudest parts.

  • wow can you give me details on the setting for the killer vocals ? I would very much appreciate it

  • I did it by ear... I think you can make out the settings on the front panel when viewed in HD, might be faster than me trying to do the same and listing them!

Also, those settings really only apply to a midrangey voice like mine and a 1970's AKG 414 mic. Just listen to your favorite vocal sound from another recording and then adjust the 737's settings to match.

  • Nikon D300s.

Lighting was just the fluorescent ceiling fixture in the room.

  • What video camera did you use? Love the quality. Did you use professional back lighting?
