@brotou Nah, there is no substitute for musical genius. Look at Bud Powell play the piano, according to almost all of my classical teachers in the past, he had some of the "worst" technique yet he could play circles around all of them and is probably one of the greatest pianists to ever grace this earth.
I never get sick of watching this video. I think Chopin was easily the greatest composer of all time. Yes, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahams, etc, etc, were brilliant in their own right, but I think Chopin was the most unique of all of them. His sense of harmony was well ahead of it's time.
With this recording, I dream that I could transcend time to watch Vladimir play his Steinway for Chopin and see the response (smile). I imagine the interpretation may be different on Chopin's Pleyel. Sad that the genius, Chopin, never made it to age 40.

@neverhoodyn I just thumbs downed your comment, A- because you mentioned such a stupid name in the presence of something so great, and B- you are shamelessly trying to get attention.
@Chromie192 Yes that's perfect combination of the Sapkowski's protagonist, Geralt of Rivia with Chopin music and skills of polish computer scientists and developers of the game! Poland rocks!
If you ever have the chance to watch footage of Vladimir Horowitz being interviewed you will have a rare treat indeed. He has the most marvelous facial expressions! Of course it all comes through in his passionate playing.
the ending of this piece is so perfect... just as if you were to leave your most beloved, full of turmoil and finally an unforgettable kiss... chopin, you must have been around now for us(there's no one as good as you now...)...
I hate to be the one nay sayer, but I've heard better versions of the song. Horowitz's handling of the crocheting in the bass is sort of choppy and as a result his melody sounds disjointed, as if he were perpetually rushing from segment to segment.
@AwesomeMcBadAss . Because as you read the score, you would find his tempo and rhythm doesn't fit the score at all e.g. at 3:01, 3:20 but this is how he interpreted it
It is the correct tempo! it says piu mosso right over the section. plus he's Howowitz, he could have played Yankee Doodle and we would have still thought it was Chopin.
the part at 4:23 just brings me tears.... what a performance... I wish Horowitz is still here today.. :( I really want to shake his hands,,,, and thank you Chopin for composing another great piece :)
@edgelee84 I agree with you---that particular section of this nocturne has always made me cry. I don't care if anyone thinks that Horowitz misinterprets Chopin, he was the person who brought Chopin into my life, and I will be forever grateful.
This is one of the greatest performances on YouTube, not only by Horowitz but by any musician. It brings out the very best of this magnificent pianist and demonstrates his remarkable qualities. I have rarely heard a performance so perfectly shaped and balanced yet spontaneous as this. Chapeau.
It is strange how is this song unknown. I mean look how few people saw this video on youtube and this is the only interpretation of this piece on youtube. So, where is the problem when this piece is so damn beautiful. I am not far to orgasm. :P
@John19182004 I did that purposely. There's always someone out there that wants to feel better than others by elevating their style of music above others. A shameful elitist attitude. I don't call these songs "pieces" because to me, that puts them on a pedestal. The people who made these were just that. People. Sacks of skin and guts.
@bilbomarks a song is a song, a nocturne is a nocturne, a waltz is a waltz, a ballade is a ballade, a polonaise is a polonaise. And you're an asshole.
@John19182004 Ah, but a poor elitist as well. Resorting to insults rather than a logical argument at the drop of a hat. In any case, I believe the descriptors polonaise/nocturne etc are not mutually exclusive from the word song. I.E. A polonaise is a polish song as well as a dance.
@bilbomarks Actually, a song is a PIECE with singing and words. so calling something a song implies singing. calling something what it is does not put it on a pedestal, its just proper terminoligy. I do agree that people get to worked up about it AND they do it for the wrong reason.
@TheGuyWhoJustShotYou The conventional definition of song implies singing, yes. But the term is now more of a blanket statement even given to instrumental "songs" of non classical ties. Something by Explosions in the Sky (post rock, all instrumental) would not be called a piece, even though a song by them is every bit as "valid" as Mozart.
@nmbanana dont' tell me to GROW UP. I"m more mature that you'l ever be. In fact I've got more maturity in my left testicle than you'll ever have in 25 lifetimes.
If you'd learn what a nocturne is. And what asong is. And what a polonaise is, etc, you'd at least start to show some hope of a meaninful life. As it is, you're completely a lost-cause that needs to either end his life, or improve it, and FAST.
@John19182004 mature enough to take such a little detail that no one really cares about, then make a big stink about it. i know very well what a nocturne, polonaise, etc. is. your just having a little hissy fit, take a nap, and maybe some st. john's wart, it will help your temper.
@John19182004 someone w/ a brain would realize that letting people call a piece a song doesn't affect the music, and would not make a huge stink over something so pointless. I'm serious, the St. John's wart would help.
actually beleive it or not its not. his piano sounds like this in all videos or most of his videos. search up on youtube "horowitz piano tuner" there franz more, his piano tuner will tell you the sound of the piano and whats so special about iy.
Audio quality... Horowitz had that bitch tuned like 3 times between each performance even if they were on consecutive days. He took that piano EVERYWHERE. To him it was perfect, so that very piano (the only one he would perform on) was crated and flown all over the world many times.
he liked that piano becasue it had a very mellow and nasal tone in it. thats why it seems like the audio quiality. but acutally its the piano that sounds like that. i have played on his piano before and it sounds exactly the same as in this video. i really wish id have a sound like tht piano
In new jersey, in paramus to be exact there is a steinway and sons showroom. they deliver his piano once a year to that showroom and let it be there for about a week for people who want to come in and try it
@spike2133876 Actually, that's not the same piano that tours Steinway showrooms. The one that tours is CD 503. The piano in this video was CD 186, which VH used from 1965-1972. But it does have a similar tonal quality.
Lo importante es el sonido y el feeling que transmita. La posición de las manos es lo de menos. Cada pianista tiene su técnica particular que va perfeccionando con el paso del tiempo. Eso no se estudia en libros teóricos, sino sobre el teclado del piano cada día.
When one plays the piano his hands should be rounded. If you look at the way his hands hover over the piano, they are flat. An example of perfect hand positioning is if you can imagine fitting your hand around a small circular rock and playing like that. It is in order to help your hands to move more freely so you can hit the sharps and flats while still holding the natural keys.
what i think he means is that his fangers are strait instead of being curved. this is becuase horowitz had huge and long figers, so his posotion of the hand was changed. because of this he couldent play chopin etude op 10 no 1
@ninjaman00 it's much easier to play flat-fingered, and not like the teachers tell you is best, with that ridiculous curved-fingered technique that produces no tonal quality.
This is a wonderful, I remember playing it before the AML is Anne Margerritte Long, I think Horowitz's playing is the most cognizant and sensitive to the potential of (emotional projection and subjection), there has ever been in piano playing.
This Chopin Nocturne is one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed, and Horowitz could play it more beautifully than anyone I've ever heard. Heard him play it live in London in '86 I believe. All I can say is stunning.
