I bought this card 2 years ago after seing this video on TigerDirect, guess he is the ultimate pitchman. This thing cost me $480 USD at the time, but it was so worth it. Love the card though, can still push out better gfx than any console out there now. XD
i know he's starting his own show at raze the world, but i kinda miss him with these reviews at tiger direct.he was funny and informative at the same time.

4870 is faster than this. Even the 4850 beats it in some games. This card didn't stay on top for that long and even though it's slower than those cards it still cost wayyy too much.
I got mine from nvecta, com , but for some reason it crashed, but i had a warranty works fine now with battlefield 2142 , and my brother got his from newegg
I have dual ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series video cards in my Dell XPS 630i system. When I run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) and click the Display tab, the Approx Total Memory given is 1786MB. Does this sound right? How many megabytes are they individually? Do I actually have a 1.78 Gigabyte video card (or equivalent of?) Also, when I attached a second monitor to the second port of the first card, no problem, but when I attached it to the second card Vista didnt detect it. Why would this be?
Heres an example of another guy having the same problem:

I've got 8400 gs 256mb and it borrowed from my system memory 767mb. So when I look at my "System Information" it showed 1023mb for the total graphics memory...
PCI Express x16 has a throughput of 32,000mbits - PCI Express x16 2.0 has a throughput of 64,000mbits. PCI x16 2.0 is backwards compatible with standard PCI x16 but the standard bus will limit the performance of the device to 32,000mbits. You can actually crossfire a pair of these now for a total of 4 GPU's @ 2.6 billion calcs per sec....but if you want "HUGE FIRE" then cross a pair of 4870 X2's.
isnt it pci express not x2 and if it in pci express x2 then can someone tell me if my mother board can handle it my mother boards name is intel extreme series d975xbx2
I jsut recentley built a computer for my bro, with lil more than $1400. It has 1 of these and a AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core. For the price its kills, KILLS any similar priced computer let alone my system. As the drivers improve, this card gets faster, and faster. So if you got $1400 or less go ATI AMD, more go Intel NIVIDA.
The clock speeds for a video card would be the default factory settings the card came at, overclocking is manually adjusting the settings to run at higher than factory settings. This is risky and with most hardware it is voiding the warranty, especially for cpu's. Also you can shorten the life, damage or even kill a card or any piece of hardware by overclocking too much. More power needed, more heat and noise generated but that can be justified if you like the performance increase you get.
Best graphics card in the world eh? Firstly you mean first massively produced and distributed, secondly most powerful in what sense? An 8800 Ultra can beat the 9800GX2 in most games at resolutions of 1920x1200 and higher. In case you haven't noticed, the benchmarks where the 3870X2 and 9800GX2 beat the 8800 Ultras and GTXs are ALL in 1680x1050 because it'd look like crap if they showed you that they lost at any higher resolution. Best graphics card in the world for 1680x1050 is what you have.
For the most part, probably, I hear that game can be really stressing in some areas. Worst case you can turn down the filters, or turn them off completely.
That much video memory doesn't make a difference, 1gb of vid memory is stupid unless you use graphic intensive apps for work, 512mb is more than enough for most games. The G92 core in the GX2 individually are better than the R700 cores in the X2, but the scaling with the onboard Crossfire is a lot better than the GX2. Needless to say I'm pretty sure the GX2 is stronger, however most people wouldn't pay 33% more when the performance difference is closer to 10-15%.
if your buying an asus board its best to go with ATI, however i don't know why you would buy asus, they moved their factories to china and ever scince have had numerous quality violations
To godscuttingoyudown, wtf kind of suggestion is that? Just because it's Asus got with ATI? His specific board is based on the P35 chipset, so only Crossfire is going to work, but you shouldn't be a stupid fanboy and just buy an ATI card. Wait for the series after 9 to get a real upgrade if you have an 8800 of any type (unless its the GTS g80 core, then upgrade that sucker). Currently the 9800 GTX and GX2 were supposed to be high end cards but since they took the cheap route with the memory bus. the 8800 GTX and Ultra are still the best cards for anything higher than 1680x1050 res for gaming, otherwise the 9600 GT or 9800 GTX are all the power you need to game at 1680x1050 or less, IQ superiority is debatable for now.
Hey I was thinking of getting a MSI radeon HD 3870 on newegg. Is MSI supported by cod4? because I am getting a Phenom X4 9500 Quad core and a MSI K9A2 CF-F AMD 790X CrossFire Mobo... I can get an ATI Radeon HD 3870...but that costs a little more than the MSI. SO i was wondering if cod4 supported MSI....
i personally think that the new 9800 GTX is the best bang for your buck card on the market now, i think the gx2 is a little overpriced, but the gtx only underpreformes it by like not even 2%, ok maybe a little more because of the 256 stream processors, but the gtx is stil badass, although with 2 gts's you can have almost more than the gx2, i wish that one were tri SLI
ATI has better AA/AF and is a great GPU. The 9800gx2 is better. If you doesn't have money, go with 3870 that is 10-15% worst than 9800gx2, but if you have money, go with 9800gx2
well dude those are still a bit unstable.... this on the other hand is stable on all tests. nvidia still needs to sort out a lot of bugs on that peace of gr8 engineering.
well dude those are still a bit unstable.... this on the other hand is stable on all tests. nvidia still needs to sort out a lot of bugs on that peace of gr8 engineering.
Might be true, but by that same logic wtf is the point of better scaling on weaker cores hmm? *cough* 3870X2 vs 9800GX2. Only reason people go for the 3870X2 is due to the much cheaper price, otherwise only stupid fanboys would ever buy it. Or people who wanted top of the line prior to the 9 series release.
nope your wrong there ATI was the fastest using full AA/AF but 2000series was so bad it dropped performace dramaticly when full AA/AF was introduced 3000series is back and runs really well with full AA/AF on.
4 ATI HD 3870X2 in Crossfire X = impossible, because max crossfirex gpu's = 4, so 2*3870x2are possible, not sure wich is the fastest configuration, probably 2*9800x2 that only support sm4.0, but 2*3870x2 are much cheaper and support sm4.1!!
Not entirely true, they're currently working on getting 4 3870X2s in CFX, not out yet in terms of drivers, but its part of the AMD/ATI Spider platform. But currently yes, 4 GPUs is the limit with currently released drivers, but that will change somewhat soon. As for what arees66 wrote, the 3870X2s can score higher because the drivers for CF and those are much much more mature and written compared to the ones used with the GX2s.
sorry for my mistake, but that's good news 4*3870x2 is just sick!! the question about drivers maturaty is true, but i still think that the price diference between the 2 cards are too big for the performance diference...
I have a question; it may be a stupid one put that is yet to be determined. Is this pci 2.0 or pci x16? I initially thought that they were all pci 2.0 put now when I am on Tigerdirect the Diamond version and the HIS version of this card say pci x16. So which one is it cause if it is pci x16 I am ordering one tomorrow!
.....All I can say to you is do some more research -__-. PCI Express 2.0 is also on the PCI-E x16 eletric slot, you can only go down from there. Now as for PCI-E 1.1 and PCI-E 2.0, there is no real difference yet, double the theoretical bandwidth with 2.0 BUT no card can saturate all the bandwidth on 1.1 effectively yet, go with whichever has the best warranty and performance reviews.
If there is no different between ASUS, GECUBE 3870x2 and the other 3870x2 cards why ASUS and GECUBE made their cards to work on PCI-E 2.0 slot??? there should be a benefit on those two cards.
all of them are PCIe 2.0 compliant. and all can be used in PCIe 1.1 slots. the 16x is just the number of lanes the card is using to comunicate with the rest of the system. PCIe 2.0 has double the bandwidth, but still uses 16 lanes (for GPUs). you can use 2.0 cards in 1.1 slots and vice versa.
p.s. every 3070X2 is made at the same place, and all are the same. only asus has a special edition with 4 dvi ports...

LOL....the 9800 series is basically the 8800 cards only difference is nvidia changed the number, lol...so for those of you thinking your upgrading to a "next gen" crad think again.
Still 3870 x2 is better when it comes to design and features. A built in sound card, a single pcb design rather than dual pcb in 9800gx2 and better pci connectors, guru3d reviewed the 9800gx2 and had problems with the connectors because it wouldn't fit.
The 9800GX2 is finally out, give it a few days and you'll have tests from every major hardware website. I believe Tom's Hardware already shows the 9800GX2 beating the 3870X2 considerably for most games, however there is the fact that the 9800 is about $150 us more expensive, and ati/amd might respond with a price drop in their 3870X2 to steal the 9800GX2's thunder.
LOL, the only way to make CFx work in any config is to have all the cards connected by the bridge. 4 of these will be seen by gpu-z on a MSI K9A2 Platinum but thats only because it gets its info from the pll from each card. It get stupid when you try to put 2 3870x2s & 2 3870s on it. The Cfx can be enabled & all six gpu's will show in CCC but game performance wont improve a lick. Now I have to put all the kiddies PCs back together b4 they get mad ;-)
You sure? I think it's MSI but someone is about to release a 1gb model of the G92 core 8800 GT, but most people think it won't help out that much. Maybe 1-2 fps at a high res.
Umm for those that are all like, " OMG it's faster than the 8800 Ultra and its cheaper!" keep in mind that card is freaking old as far as tech goes. And like someone mentioned, its 2 gpu cores, the ultra still beats the 3870 single core on its own. As for running 4 of these cards, there's barely driver support out for running 2 of these at once since thats 4 gpu's, there isn't support yet for 8 gpu's like what you were suggesting. As for the 9800GTX, don't put it off till it's out and reviewed.
Yeah i just read that CrossfireX can only support 4 gpus not 8 =(
If it did that would have been freaking awesome. Imagine 8 gpus, i also figured that I would need an extended ATX motherboard that has 10 slots, the average mobo only has like 7 slots.
790fx? Is that really a motherboard name? I'm planing to have an ageia and a x-fi sound card so i would need a motherboard with 2 free pci slots while having 2 pci express gpu slots. Thanks anyway!
Well if you go AMD get a 790FX and X38 for Intel. The DFI 790FX and X38 on newegg are the best performance wise, DFI makes the best boards. I wouldnt reccomend getting a pysx card tho, only like 3 games use it really.
And those games only see performance increases with crappy cards. Anyways yeah X38, or X48 if you want to throw around some money. And 790FX is the new chipset for AMD boards, its not the name of a motherboard. Like X38 is an Intel chipset and 780i is Nvidia's current one.
mostly all new games supporting the crossfire mode for the 2 3870's and with 8xAnti Aliasing in high resolution 1600 x 800> this card is like 50 - 80% faster in every game to a 8800 ultra tested on the same system with new drivers and all... WOW i wanit its quiter when on low profile and it uses 20 W more in action downsite is that a 8800 gts 512 or 640 is much less pricy and has same fps without anti aliasing but if want something for the future games ull need it!

crazybro191 3 years ago 2
i personally think that the new 9800 GTX is the best bang for your buck card on the market now, i think the gx2 is a little overpriced, but the gtx only underpreformes it by like not even 2%, ok maybe a little more because of the 256 stream processors, but the gtx is stil badass, although with 2 gts's you can have almost more than the gx2, i wish that one were tri SLI
howboutdat1227 3 years ago
ATI has better AA/AF and is a great GPU. The 9800gx2 is better. If you doesn't have money, go with 3870 that is 10-15% worst than 9800gx2, but if you have money, go with 9800gx2

ATI if you want quality image and good enought performace, but otherwise 9800GX2 if your just looking for performace.

xfx 9800gx2... trust me, i have one. it's better.

how?
yadad07 3 years ago
Might be true, but by that same logic wtf is the point of better scaling on weaker cores hmm? *cough* 3870X2 vs 9800GX2. Only reason people go for the 3870X2 is due to the much cheaper price, otherwise only stupid fanboys would ever buy it. Or people who wanted top of the line prior to the 9 series release.
xojix 3 years ago
I have one too. It's really not any better.
hackerhunterdotexe 3 years ago
Not AA = fail, nvidia cards often perform better with AA/AF on compared to ATi (from the many reviews Ive read)
KiloriloFFXI 3 years ago
nope your wrong there ATI was the fastest using full AA/AF but 2000series was so bad it dropped performace dramaticly when full AA/AF was introduced 3000series is back and runs really well with full AA/AF on.

This is like comparing 8 HD3870 with 4 8800GTS 512.Which one do you think is better?
Arees66, shut up, it's imposible for 2 X2 to score MUCH higher than 2 GX2.
sonicrulez 3 years ago
If youd bother to look at reviews you'd see that 3870X2 still beats the 9800GX2 in
3DMark06!!
arees66 3 years ago
4 ATI HD 3870X2 in Crossfire X = impossible, because max crossfirex gpu's = 4, so 2*3870x2are possible, not sure wich is the fastest configuration, probably 2*9800x2 that only support sm4.0, but 2*3870x2 are much cheaper and support sm4.1!!
uuuaaaaaa 3 years ago
Not entirely true, they're currently working on getting 4 3870X2s in CFX, not out yet in terms of drivers, but its part of the AMD/ATI Spider platform. But currently yes, 4 GPUs is the limit with currently released drivers, but that will change somewhat soon. As for what arees66 wrote, the 3870X2s can score higher because the drivers for CF and those are much much more mature and written compared to the ones used with the GX2s.
xojix 3 years ago
sorry for my mistake, but that's good news 4*3870x2 is just sick!! the question about drivers maturaty is true, but i still think that the price diference between the 2 cards are too big for the performance diference...
ps: yes, i'm an ATI fanboy...

I have a question; it may be a stupid one put that is yet to be determined. Is this pci 2.0 or pci x16? I initially thought that they were all pci 2.0 put now when I am on Tigerdirect the Diamond version and the HIS version of this card say pci x16. So which one is it cause if it is pci x16 I am ordering one tomorrow!
mikesw88t 3 years ago
2.0
MonolithNZ 3 years ago
not a stupid question .. i too was not sure about that but here is what you want
"ASUS" & "GECUBE" Are PCI Express 2.0
"DIAMOND" & "HIS" & "VisionTek" & "SAPPHIRE" & "MSI" Are PCI Express x16
I'm ganna buy ASUS because i have PCI Express 2.0
ahmaltalib 3 years ago
.....All I can say to you is do some more research -__-. PCI Express 2.0 is also on the PCI-E x16 eletric slot, you can only go down from there. Now as for PCI-E 1.1 and PCI-E 2.0, there is no real difference yet, double the theoretical bandwidth with 2.0 BUT no card can saturate all the bandwidth on 1.1 effectively yet, go with whichever has the best warranty and performance reviews.
xojix 3 years ago
If there is no different between ASUS, GECUBE 3870x2 and the other 3870x2 cards why ASUS and GECUBE made their cards to work on PCI-E 2.0 slot??? there should be a benefit on those two cards.
ahmaltalib 3 years ago
all of them are PCIe 2.0 compliant. and all can be used in PCIe 1.1 slots. the 16x is just the number of lanes the card is using to comunicate with the rest of the system.

I believe Tom's Hardware already shows the 9800GX2 beating the 3870X2 considerably for most games, however there is the fact that the 9800 is about $150 us more expensive, and ati/amd might respond with a price drop in their 3870X2 to steal the 9800GX2's thunder.

but ati crossfirex supports up to 4 graphics card runing at full speed and nvidia only does 3 so it they run pretty close

Now I have to put all the kiddies PCs back together b4 they get mad ;-)

remember the hd 2900 xt 1gb?
it was faster than the 8800 gtx and 8800 ultra in 3d mark 06 by about i think 100 points or so
zeke01370 4 years ago
You sure? I think it's MSI but someone is about to release a 1gb model of the G92 core 8800 GT, but most people think it won't help out that much. Maybe 1-2 fps at a high res.
xojix 4 years ago
2900xt 1 gb ? ? did it really beat 8800 gtx and ultra ? i cant believe dat :|
ZeRoKoOLShobee 4 years ago
Umm for those that are all like, " OMG it's faster than the 8800 Ultra and its cheaper!" keep in mind that card is freaking old as far as tech goes. And like someone mentioned, its 2 gpu cores, the ultra still beats the 3870 single core on its own. As for running 4 of these cards, there's barely driver support out for running 2 of these at once since thats 4 gpu's, there isn't support yet for 8 gpu's like what you were suggesting. As for the 9800GTX, don't put it off till it's out and reviewed.
xojix 4 years ago
Who cares if the ultra has one core only?? a good card is a good card, in the end the amount means shit. Its the speed
MonolithNZ 3 years ago
3dgameman reviewed this and the 8800 gtx was faster by 7frames.

Can any1 think of a way to get 4 3870x2s on one motherboard? Or are they just too big? If so wut motherboard?
JohnRazic 4 years ago
You can get 4 to fit in a 790FX/X38/X48 but CrossfireX drivers only support two of them.
Sha1dov 4 years ago
Yeah i just read that CrossfireX can only support 4 gpus not 8 =(
If it did that would have been freaking awesome. Imagine 8 gpus, i also figured that I would need an extended ATX motherboard that has 10 slots, the average mobo only has like 7 slots.
790fx? Is that really a motherboard name? I'm planing to have an ageia and a x-fi sound card so i would need a motherboard with 2 free pci slots while having 2 pci express gpu slots. Thanks anyway!
JohnRazic 4 years ago
Well if you go AMD get a 790FX and X38 for Intel. The DFI 790FX and X38 on newegg are the best performance wise, DFI makes the best boards. I wouldnt reccomend getting a pysx card tho, only like 3 games use it really.
Sha1dov 4 years ago
And those games only see performance increases with crappy cards. Anyways yeah X38, or X48 if you want to throw around some money. And 790FX is the new chipset for AMD boards, its not the name of a motherboard. Like X38 is an Intel chipset and 780i is Nvidia's current one.
xojix 4 years ago

mostly all new games supporting the crossfire mode for the 2 3870's and with 8xAnti Aliasing in high resolution 1600 x 800> this card is like 50 - 80% faster in every game to a 8800 ultra tested on the same system with new drivers and all... WOW i wanit its quiter when on low profile and it uses 20 W more in action downsite is that a 8800 gts 512 or 640 is much less pricy and has same fps without anti aliasing but if want something for the future games ull need it!
