Well, the "nasty liberals from Cambridge" (or anyone else for that matter) can write all the letters they want. Thanks, in part, to the boys in blue. Trust me, no one was in any more danger than you are when you live near an airport, attend a flight show and probably safer then eating those fenway franks, or near arods bat when it slips out of his babysoft hands.
To a trained eye, this was not a high risk maneuver. These are not Boeing 767s that are being flown.
The pilot is not getting his wings clipped! Do you have any idea how hard it is to recruit and maintain combat experienced pilots? To even suggest that we'd ever remove one of Americas best from service for this mishap is very ignorant. Whether you chose to believe it or not, every pilot puts himself in the line of fire for the security of America. Leaves his own family to protect yours. If we are ever attacked again this pilot will be in the cockpit fighting for our security not behind a desk.
that was not an acrobatic stunt. they were probably out there orbiting waiting for their time. when it came, smart guy #4 got separated and was hauling afterburner to rejoin.
came in too fast, only way to slow down and not fly up his wingman's tail is to peel off. 1 word: grounded

Shut up scumbag, you're talking about the same Marines that crash airplanes on an almost weekly basis right? As a kid on Okinawa there wasn't a week gone by where you didn't have falling airplane parts.
Sorry to correct you, but 2 F-15's from the Otis ANGB were the first to arrive and had the first CAP over NYC. The 2 birds that were scrambled ended up doing an 8 hour cap over NYC. But, damn, the 102nd and the 158th did an INCREDIBLE job on such short notice during those dark days. New Englanders should be have the utmost pride!
Hey this was a fantastic flyover, I was in the marines for 20 years and I have never seen a better flyover in my life, he may have been a little exzuberent but still was a damn great flyover. AWESOME!!!!!!!
That music at just the right moment really made me laugh out loud for each of the three times I replayed the clip. I had been waiting all day to see this video since my friend told me about it, being a Red Sox fan living in Texas. Good clip!! Thanks for posting!
I am an F-16 pilot and it looks to me like the guy was trying to get rejoined and overshot. if he made an honest mistake (due to to pretty bad flying) and had to barrel roll to keep from hitting #3 then no harm no foul. however, if he did that intentionally then he should be punished pretty harshly.
I know a Colonel in the VT ANG, trust me he was grounded.
However, he was grounded for remedial training, not as a punishment. That is indeed a legit manuevor, however protocol states it can't be done under 5,000 feet, that flyover was at 1,200 feet.
No one was ever in any danger, he just broke a rule and isn't being punished for it just re-trained.
whether it was intentional or not, I would have rather seen him perform that maneuver than go barreling into another plane and crashing into a stadium full of 50000 people. If it was not intentional, his reaction was instinctual and he never lost control of his aircraft. The F-16 is designed to handle maneuvers way more intense than that one.
The pilot that did the move at the end was grounded today April 11th because the manuver was one that was used only at altitudes of 5,000 feet or above. They were at 1,200.
I'm not a pilot but I sometimes play one in my mind. I enjoyed watching the move but thought that it was probably not the smartest decision to make. In combat, absolutely! In a public display setting, he probably should have banked off and let the remaining three planes do the flyby. Regardless, I hope the pilot is back in his F16 bravely defending our country again soon! And to all of you in the military, thank you SO MUCH for protecting us. You are appreciated! God Bless!!
"Maverick do whatever the hell Maverick want too"(that's what he was thinking in his mind, because he always thinks of Maverick in the
3rd person)
Just like in the movie when he flew by at low altitude and made that carrier traffic controller spill his coffee, do you think that it's possible that he made on of the players still in the locker room shoot up his roids at a bad angle?
The maneuver is legit, and is performed all the time when rejoin closure rate to too fast. I'm an Air Force pilot, and this how you recover from an overshoot. He was grounded because he was "too low", but when this is what you do all the time, it becomes instinctual. Not really a big deal.
WOW that pilot knows his stuff, they should have not grounded him. the crowd enjoyed it and no one got hurt. so to me.... WHAT's the big deal about the stunt.
The pilot has been grounded, not as a punishment but so they can provide remedial training in tactics and procedures so this situation does not happen again. He might have made other choices to rejoin the formation.
Then learn to "fly the needles" like the rest of us.
There is no reason for the 'slot' to overestimate his airspeed or closure rate and collide with the rest of the flight. I don't care if you are flying an RV8 or an F-16....
That pilot only had to perform that maneuver to maintain separation. If he would have been a better 'stick and rudder' man, that would hnot have been necessary.
and im not saying that they shouldnot give further training, but grounding him. oh well its the military i guess all annyone can say its... YES SIR!!!
A full on barrel-roll during a national anthem flyover. That's something you don't see everyday. haha. To bad for the pilot, trying to show up our national anthem with some acrobatics. Good move, bad timing.
The maneuver, performed during the Red Sox Opening Day game Tuesday, came just as the Boston Symphony Orchestra finished playing the national anthem. It elicited roaring applause and cheers from the full-capacity crowd, which clearly appreciated what it thought to be great showmanship. But as it turns out, the maneuver was improper and the Vermont Air National Guard grounded the pilot this week.
that music at the end killed the mood...

I have to ask, how many have tried flying a fighter jet in a tight formation like a flyover for a sports event?
VTANG2007 3 years ago
As a AF pilot I can say that over Fenway isn't the best place for that type of rejoin.
Although it was a beauty!!! :)
I love my job.

A barrel roll over Fenway on opening day, that was dumb and awesome at the same time.
Getting grounded by the VtANG is better than getting violated by the FAA. That was pretty cool though.
