The perfect rifle for sure, but my groups touch. I'm using a 3.5x10 Leupold. At 50 yards, the bullets are going through the same hole, but I'm using a bench rest for steadiness, which might be the wind? I've been using the Remington 130 gr Core-Lokt, but if I needed a heaver bullet, I'd use a 140 gr boattail. It maintains its speed and carries a high coefficients. Anything faster burns up one's barrel, not matter what caliber.
@1LonePuma cool nice job on the 1 hole groups. i still need to try diffrent bullets to see if the groups will shrink and still breaking in the barrel. too. so far i dont think this rifle has no more than 100 rounds down the tube. a work in progress.
@dantheman7624: I have a FN Mauser. I believe it was for the .243, but I bought the action by itself. I sent it to Pac-Nor rifle barrels and they built a barrel to my specs, 26.5 inch polished Chrome Moly with 3 in 12. And a custom stock around $2k. It has a 3.5x10 Leupold and I gotta say, it's truly a tac driver. No joke, I'm putting bullet holes inside bullet holes. I'm very pleased with it, but it is my second FN Action.
are you going to blue the receiver, or leave it in "The White"?
that scope looks pretty high. Does it line up when you weld your cheekbone onto the stock, or do you have to slide your jaw up the stock to get it to line up?
@theThinkerator YES the whole rifle has been hot blued and is a sleek looking rifle. the scope is just fine for me. Rember this was my first 98 mauser with a scope so i am used to it. i pull it up just perfact every time wheather i am prone or standing. heavy rifle too so i never took it hunting.
@ampegged Thanks man. I just had to humble my self and lisen to all the input that i got from class mates and the instructor and out came a nice rifle.
DanTheMan: That does sound fun, but you can do that either at Leupold via Internet or you can see the process on YouTube without leaving your living room.
DanTheMan: Yeah, I'm pretty sure they'll allow you to go through their plant. I've been through the Redfield plant. About getting a good scope; the better the scope the more you get to see your rifle preform at its best.
@1LonePuma Yea i want to be there to hit go on the CNC that is going to machine my scope and than pick out my glass and wire for the cross haires than watch it turn black than put it all together. than shoot it. cool.
DanTheMan, if I were to make one suggestion it would be, a high-end scope. Your rifle is capable of shooting bullets in bullet holes, as mine. You might consider a Leupold scope with mil dots in the varmint hunter's reticle with the MOA micrometer adjustments on top of the scope. I'm sure you'll be impressed with its results. I'm now looking at the Leupold RX1000 range finder, which works with the MOA.
@1LonePuma i know exactly what you mean but there is a point to be made. The rifle is the hobbie not the scope. i wish i could built my own scope. I wonder if Leupold will let me in their factory.
I'm glad to see someone else build a custom .270. I came across a brand new FM Action in Denver and went from there. I had a 26.5" a polished Chrome Moly Steel barrel with a 3 in 12 for maximum stabilization and zero harmonics. I use a Leupold 2X10X40mm with micrometer adjustments. I've found the 130 gr to be an absolute tack driver, but to shoot even further, I'd use the Remington 130 gr Premier® AccuTip.
i have a similar rifle, it was picked off a dead german officer and then converted to 270 by mauser. the story goes something like that, accurate as hell
I too just finished building my .270 Mauser action, but I'm using a Leupold 3.5 x 10 with micrometer adjustments and wow, putting bullets inside bullet holes was beyond my expectations. I did however add a 26.5, 3 twist in one -- chrome molly steal barrel, slightly heaver then a sporter barrel. No sense cheating on the scope. However, too bad I didn't get the varmint recital.
Any rifle without iron sights looks more like an instrument. Iron sights are absolete, I suppose, but they still give a "real" rifle that look. Accuracy, killing/knock-down power, etc., is great, but aesthetically, w/o iron sights, a rifle does not look complete or finished. No iron sights and a rifle looks attached to a scope rather than a scope attached to a rifle.
I hear what you are saying. I built one for my niece with iron sights then she wanted a scope so i bent the bolt to fit a base and rings. I have old 7mm small ring mausers that i fited iron sights to. This 270 was built as is no iron sights so a scope will always be attached.
Sweet piece that's what I would like to do with my VZ24. I have sporterized K98, 25.06Rem barrel w/ Tasco 12 power scope on Weaver mounts. Black syn. stock. I shoot Win. fail safe 125 gr. SPBT's. I want to tune her trigger down a bit to 1/2lb. pull tho.
The FN mausers are a good starting platform for a nice rifle. Look into Boyds Stock for a nice replacement. I found out that some old milatary mausers are hiding a nice stock ounce you refinish it.
The class I took was only a hobby class not a full blown class. It was 1 night a week and 4 hours long for a semester at my local college. I keep on taking the class for the last 6 years I think.
Great video, but you left out the groups measurements. Your right Tasco's can be good. People pay way too much for scopes these days. With the great technology now you can get great scopes for less than $50. There is no reason to spend more than $200 on a rifle scope.
Yes, most know that. I guess this means you don't remember the exact measurements? Nice stock. Try going with two piece bases, it looks much better. Nice rifle for a rookie... Thanks
I forgot to measure the group. As you can see the 5 shot group is a vertical string, I did not tighen the stock screws enough. I went with the one piece for the stiffness and ring alighnment. Not bad for a rookie rifle that will shoot better than any factory rifle. Thanks for watching.
Great work. Maybe you can put together my 1963 Safari Grade Browning. I have a 98 Mauser military stock that I would like used for my browning. Just trim the extra wood with the bayonet stuff on it. Wonder if it would fit a commercial grade FN action...
Right now I have no acess to any tools to do gun work just basic cleaning supplies. I left the gun trade in favor of being a welder. But as soon as I save up to build a shop I will continue with my gun hobby.
Great job mate I liked the vid! also very nice job on the rifle if only they had gunsmithing classes here in australia. I actually ordered a Browning Stainless Stalker A-bolt in .270 Winchester yesterday, can't wait to get some loads going.
Tasco scopes can be good. My hunting rifle in .308 has a tasco. My friend and I took two coyotes this weekend and both rifles had tascos.243 and .257 roberts. Coyotes were getting to the sheep.
OK, i take it you had to pay for all those materials for the gun? or did you make them in a shop? and WTH is a gun smithing class?! i WILL take one!!!!
