I like your sound. I've been looking for something like this. your good I like it. maybe we should think about doing something like that in the future if you like. it's up to you. seriously. no joke.
Yeah, I have the music and click track playing all the way through, sometimes all the lead guitar gets added after. That portion at the end is the same music as the video, but it's stripped down to just the click, rhythm guitar and drums, it's to highlight the metric modulation.
Another cool intro like always. Toms have great attack. I liked the panning on the guitars, very cool. Overall a nice deep, dark groove. Man I hope you record a CD some day!
Thanks Bill, I had a intro with lightning, but I couldn't download it back from YouTube. At the beginning my toms have great attack because I was hitting them so hard and I had to count exactly 10 times. The panned guitar fits nicely in the groove, but when I modulate the drum tempo (jump on to the guitar tempo) that panned guitar sounds out of place (love that) Thanks, I would love to make a CD one day, but I'd need help.
Ahh, cool. It does help to accent the hits when you are counting them. Well, maybe you could save up with your friends and find a cheap recording studio to lay it down in...I know you can get some pretty good deals around here for studio time. And they would definitely help you!
There is a studio in the next town, but its all about our different schedules and lack of free time, between us four guys we have thirteen kids. Im the lucky one, I only have one child (so far) so that gives me a bit more time.
wow! That is a lot of kids! Yeah, one is manageable...but she might be lonely without a brother or sister. But you get to experience a completely different side of life. Raising children just might trump any amount of time in the studio...
Yup, a lot, my one friend has five kids, I call him "cheaper by the dozen" lol. My daughter has plenty of cousins on my wifes side; raising children is great, but it's not all fun and games.
No we don't really argue...I meant that it just gets frustrating on the road, setting up, tearing down, trying to get a good mix (that album only came about after many hours of hard work and me not being happy with the original mixes)...so I didn't mean that the band was not "fun and games" but more so the process...and that's gotta be the same for kids...rewarding for both in the end...at the end of the day...
Yeah, I didn't mean serious arguing, more of a difference of opinions. All that hard work really shows on your album, you have a far greater knowledge about recording that I ever will, and mixing is difficult when you have other intsruments to consider. The one(and only) good thing about playing by myself is that there's is nobody telling me to turn them up. A band is just like a family.
Well thank you. Fortunately I had the opportunity to intern at a studio and learn a few things (and I have spent hours reading about this stuff on the internet). Yeah, there is nothing but skill to mixing...I still shudder when I hear a great mix and wonder how the engineer did that. Yes, it is nice to have control of what volumes you want!! Ha, there are advantages to a one man band, but that also makes you a small "band family." At least you have a real family to compensate!
Ha, I'm more like a one man bland, ah... I make myself laugh. That must have been great experience to be in a studio, that's my dream. I get lost when reading technical mumbo jumbo, I need hands on experience before I'd learn anything. You obviously learned a lot though, you have one of the best drum sounds on YouTube. In your last video it was the first time I heard your raw drum sound, is that what you hear in your headphones?
Haha, bland. You are too hard on yourself. How many times do I have to tell you that?! Yeah, I studied electrical engineering in school, so it gave me a lot of the technical background (too much...haha) about frequency responses, magnitudes, etc.. It wasn't the most exciting thing, but I understand the theory behind it all. Hands on experience is better, though. Teaching your ears to listen can't happen in the classroom.
Ha, you're right I am too hard on myself, my problem is that I'm aware of all my flaws. I try to play really good , but I always screw something up or drag the tempo, but I don't let mistakes stop me from uploading videos.
Having all that technical background is good to have, the more knowledge you have can only help you, ecspecially if you run into any problems( with recording, etc.)
Well, to be aware of all of your flaws is FAR better than being ignorant of them...at least you know where to improve (and I don't notice these flaws you speak of, by the way). Just play with a metronome and you've got the tempo problem fixed!
And I'm glad it doesn't keep you from uploading videos. You put out great stuff. Now, there are other people on the other hand that should probably not be uploading stuff...haha.
Ha, I'm glad that you don't hear these mistakes, but actually the metronome is part of the problem as far as dragging the tempo. I'm not used to playing to a click track, so I feel confined and restricted when playing to one, but it's gradually getting easier. At the end of this video you can hear the metronome that I play to.
First of all, those drums are actually our bassist's drums (Chris'). This happens to be the one song on the CD that we used his drums on.... the rest are on my drums. So you heard his drums raw, and yes i agree that they sound amazing! And yes, I hear it very similar to that in the headphones. I pretty much just put a compressor on the kick and snare and rock out. It sounds good enough in my headphones. I'll have to post a raw drum sound of my drums...
Ah yes, I forgot that those were Chris' drums( it's even mentioned in the video)
plus they're different colors, is that a mega bell ride? I had an idea; what if you combined the raw(or natural) sound of your drums with a duplicate track of your compressed drum sound? It might take some tweaking to get the right mix, sounds good in theory anyway.
Yes, that is a mega bell ride. It's so loud and you can't miss it with your stick, haha! I definitely like playing it for certain songs. I really like his Paiste ride that sounds so crystal-like. You hear it in there a lot.
Wow, you should be an engineer! Your idea is actually something that engineers commonly do! Yep, people duplicate tracks and bury compressed ones under the raw ones. They call it "New York-style" compression. There are an infinite amount of cool combinations like it!
That's quite the name "mega bell" a person couldn't miss that if they tried and boy talk about accents. What type of (crystal-like)Paiste ride is that? I have a 22" Paiste dry ride, I like a ride that makes a "tick" sound as far as playing rock music. Wow! who knew my idea was actually something that exists. I add compression to my drum track (in Audacity) but it still doesn't give it the tight sound I'm looking for(like the way your bass drum sounds ecspecially) any suggestions?
It's a 20 inch Signature Ride. It doesn't have a bell on it, so you can't use it for all songs, but it is great.
Hmm, well if you added EQ and compression to individual microphones you could get more control. If you have a track for just your bass drum, put a different EQ and compression on it than you would use on the rest of the track. Cut out 400Hz and hear what happens!
Ah, I remember Ed Thigpen had a ride like that, I'd seen it in a Modern Drummer magazine years back, I still have all magazines. I basically have 3 mics they all run into an old TOA MX-401 mixer then into my computer. I only have one track so I can't add more or different compression on my bass drum (for eg) There are 5 things on the mixer I can control to each mic: High, Low, FB, Rev and Level , everything else is add with Audacity, like compression, EQ, and more reverb.
Ha, i had to throw away some of my Modern Drummers because I just had way too many...so I scanned my favorite articles into the computer and trashed a bunch but I kept all of the ones with Tool in them...one of them signed by Danny Carey. Hmm, 3 mics is not bad. I guess you could always fool with the EQ on the mixer, but I honestly don't think you're getting a bad sound. Obviously you'd have to find a way to get 12 inputs or so if you wanted to go all out professional...
Yeah, I've got a nice pile of MD mags myself, that's a good idea to scan them, great for space saving (if I only had a scanner...that worked) Wow! You have one signed by Danny Carey, that's pretty cool....I take it that you met him. It'd be nice to sit down with Danny and talk music, he seems down to earth, Maynard on the other hand seems like a smart ass jerk. I'll just keep playing around with my sound, considering my equipment, my drums sound not bad.
Hey Ken, yeah, I tracked Danny down when he was playing with this side project "The Pigmy Love Circus." They came to Cleveland to play and my friend and I waited around until 2am and Danny came out...we were like the only people there so we hung out with him for about an hour or so. Danny is down to earth, and I think you'd be correct about Maynard... but I don't put them on any special level... you find out that they're just normal people like us too...
Hey, that's cool, it must have been nice to sit and chat for that long. I agree, I don't put them on any special level, but it's hard not to get a little excited. Danny is my favorite drummer, he always plays the right beat to enhance the music and he makes it groove no matter difficult the piece is to play to. His fills are seamless and he always plays for the music, while still expressing himself creatively. Oh, I keep forgeting to ask, how are those new songs coming along?
Yeah, it was fun. He talked about music for a little bit but mostly talked about basketball...obviously his favorite sport. He was drinking a lot of beer too, so he was a little bit light headed but still very friendly. Yeah, I got a little excited too! He is by far my favorite drummer of all time...you are right about his fills being seamless. Simply amazing.
Ah, the new songs...2 have lyrics and everything...just waiting on some more electric guitars to be recorded and then we can proceed with final vocals. I could send you a demo if you want...it is still rough but that's how they all start. Would I use the same e-mail address that you sent me the song from?
Excellent, working on new material is always exciting; a chance to try something new on the drumset or a cool groove to jam to. Hey if it's no trouble, I wouldn't mind hearing it, and yes it's same E-mail. Speaking of Ivanrest, I had a chance to sit down and really have a good listen to your album, I'm beginning to hear all the layers(in the music) and little details in your drumming, there's a lot of cool things you add. Man I can't even air drum that double bass part in Free.
Well, thanks Ken. It means a lot to me to know you are still listening to it and picking it apart! I didn't even come up with that pattern. I had to write down what the guitarist was doing on a piece of paper and practice it over and over until I finally got it in my head. I could always send you the pattern if you want to learn it. I'll e-mail you the demos right now and you can tell me if you think they are about on level with our current album or if you like them more...
Ha, well I'm not picking them apart in a bad way, lol. Worship Everywhere and Everything Broken are my favorite, they both have strong melodies, but they're all good and growing on me more and more. I'ts getting late so I'll have a listen to your demos tomorrow, 4:45 am comes fast.
ew ugly! that is quite early. I've been waking up at 5:30, but that is not as bad as your time! Wow, yeah, I really started to like them all after working on them so long. But that is interesting to hear which are your favorites.
Sure thing, get some sleep. I'm going to bed as well. I got your e-mail and will check it out in the morning!
Well, I just had a listen to your demos and I really liked them. I think it's just a matter of time before I start hearing your songs on the radio. All your songs are radio friendly and should appeal to a lot of people. For rough demos they sounded pretty good and I could hear the areas that would be filled in by guitar.
The rough vocals sounded good too except for a couple little spots, but I can hear through that. I like the melodies too, great opportunity for back up and harmony.
Hey Ken, I like the mp3 you sent me. Thanks, now I can access it easier. I would encourage you to keep working on that idea. If you could develop a full length song based on that theme, I think you would have a great tune on your hands.
Thanks for listening to our demos! Ha, it'd be nice to be on the radio...that's probably more than we could ever dream of. I know, I can't wait to track final vocals and see what creativity we can come up with it. I'll keep you posted!
Hey, glad you liked the tune, I'd like to make full length songs(again) but I'd need some input from my band mates. They'd bring new ideas and the skill of their intsruments . I kind of like these little riffs though, they're short and to the point,
I'm already pushing my limit as far as playing guitar. Well you guys should be on the radio, but sometimes deserving people never get that lucky break.

@AttemtpD How's it going Mr. No Videos? This video was soooo last year.

I mean, I noticed the click track at the end, but are you playing to one in the beginning?

Yes, variety and an open mind are key when it comes to music; both in writing and just listening.

Thanks alot, I love making this stuff up; fun and challenging. I'll have to check out your video; you sure like your acid rock.
