this song begins like a dragon flying over the forest, then he grows as a tree on the desert with the magnificent sun passing away on the horizon, finally he dies as a breath of a old man while he is remembering his childhood...
Everyone is of course entitled to their own tastes, but saying this song lacks dynamics is just plain wrong. I can point out at least 2 crescendo and decrescendo moments in this song, which are compositional devices of dynamics. Plus this song has layers, texture and the melody/ phrases have a hypnotic/soaring quality to them. It may be long winded to some, but to me it is structurally powerful and deceptively simple at times.
The album that started it all, their career, their underground "rise". Even if it sounds incredibly dark and depressing, it has that hint of melody brought by the keyboard layers, almost to balance the whole piece. Just great.
those who despise funeral doom without any solid reason don't know what they pass over. This stuff has an incredible atmospheric identity as well as feeling put into the music
Interesting song and music. Far outside my usual taste, yet it is kind of evocative of the Early Romantic period of classical music. Beethoven is one composer that this reminded me of.
All in all, a little too slow for my taste, but very interesting. May be the closest to classical i've heard in a good while.
In my opinion, this song couldn't capture the attention of a fucking squirrel. Every single aspect of the music (vocals, guitars, drums) is soft and fuzzy, and would instantly put someone to sleep. There is no sense of climax or dynamics. NOTHING stands out. Everything just meanders on and on (a recurring problem in these types of bands). Seriously, how can you enjoy this? And don't just say some over-sentimental bull crap; I'm here to listen to music for the music alone.
@Supakacha Man this sort of music is made to specifically convey a kind of emotion and atmosphere, which many people do appreciate. You said; "Seriously, how can you enjoy this? And don't just say some over-sentimental bull crap;" - Don't down-play what you simply do not understand. You have no idea what doom metal is about. If you want more technically engaging music, go and listen to some speed metal or something and leave your un-called-for negative opinions to yourself. You're so typical
@WarriorPoet420 Get off your high horse. Do you really think you know what this song is supposed to mean? Did you write it? No, because then you would have had an actual emotional connection to it. ONLY the artist who created the song knows exactly what the song was supposed to mean. Why doesn't anyone like music just to like music? Does it really have to do something for you? No. Also, what's not to understand? Is it really that complex and mind-boggling?
@Supakacha I was referring to the whole genre of doom metal. It's not made to display technical skill like other music types do. If you don't relate to the sound, lyrics and feelings behind it, fine. Why comment? What's your problem, listen to something else? "Does it really have to do something for you?" Yes, actually it does for me. This is one of many genres I enjoy, and can appreciate each one for what they bring on their own.
I don't get your agenda. If I don't like something, I move on.
@WarriorPoet420 How can you relate to something with which you had no part in making or being involved in? Also, I can tell you really like using rhetoric, because the whole "if you don't like it, don't watch it" crap is a pathetic and illogical explanation. Listen, it's called OPINION, and I will keep that opinion until someone gives me an ACTUAL answer as to why this would be interesting. I came to the video to listen to the song and I didn't like it. Why can't I say so?
@Supakacha ok doom/funeral is in no way my thing, but maybe you just need to understand that this entire genre of music is clearly not meant for you. there is a vast difference between heavily technical and dynamic music, and music like this which is heavily ambient/atmospheric. i reckon this song is great for the genre as it is one of those songs that gets ppl interested in something new, five magics by megadeth is the 1st thrash song i heard and got me into what is now my now favourite genre
@BruceSpoonsley I'm not saying that I only look for technicality in music. You are making assumptions without even knowing what I meant. The song here isn't dynamic by any means. It literally just goes on and on. I have listened to a lot of ambient/atmospheric stuff (Wolves in the Throne Room for example, which is not a snoozefest), and this really doesn't capture my attention, just saying. What I want to know is specifically what about this song makes it interesting to listen to.
@Supakacha wasn't referring to you when i said technical and dynamic music, was referring to myself as that is the style of music i like. but every now and then i listen to something like this coz it's like a metal version of chillout music to me. i find i like it more than electronic chillout because i don't really listen to much electronic as it's just not my style. also WITTR are ambient black metal, hence the large pace changes in their music, their style is not nearly as ambient as funeral
When I first heard Stormcrowfleet many years ago it stopped me dead in my tracks, very few bands come remotely close to the crushing beauty of Skepticism, truly amazing band.
does anyone know where I can find/remember the video someone did with this song, using the film Gladiator? it was amazing... it was up on youtube but got taken down 2/3 years ago
I listened to this song falling asleep right after I was introduced to it, and afterward I was certain that I knew what drowning slowly was like. tentacles of seaweed pull me down, and as the bubbles from my exhaled breath break on the surface, they sound like the vocals to this song.
The end of the song that turns into the ambient outro is possibly one of the most breathtaking parts of a song I've heard. It sends you into this melancholic euphoria that brings about obscure feelings of nostalgia and an imagery of you standing alone in a vast field watching the sun set off in the distance as the darkness of the evening slowly enshrouds you. Beautiful, sweet misery.
Beautiful song, I don't find it depressing at all. Funeral doom, and this band in particular, make one see the beauty of their life as just a spec of dust on the breeze. The music reminds us that we will all die on day, and gives a kind of tribute to the solitary journey of our lives.
There's nothing else like it anywhere. How could anyone listen to 5:30 and not be swept off to their own little world?
It was one of my first doom metal songs and albums I heard back in the days, but it blew me away, the beauty overwhelmed me, Doom metal became a new sensation, a part of me. In time many great bands joined the list, it's a shame that this kind of art is being mocked by so many metalheads I know... :-(
Indescribable, I don't think so... this music seems to invoke a sentience of nostalgia within oneself, and conjure a sorrowful augury of which is fabricated by the belief that we are doomed. Which we are.
Музиката на Скептицизъм отваря съзнанието и те пренася в други светове. Мрачно, тъжно, сладко... наистина рифовете си играят с въображението и чувствата по страхотен начин. КРАСОТА!
This song makes me feel so... I can't find a word for it. It's so soothing, comforting.. I don't get how people call Skepticism a depressing band. Many people don't see the beauty in funeral doom I suppose.
@MCRockers maybe because the singer said so, just before he killed himself. U see what u mind wants u to, if the pictures in the vid where all depressive and sad, everyone would agree song's sad as hell and depressive... i don't find it beauty cause its sound but for what u feel when u listen to it, and it ain't joy
@MCRockers I agree with you on that, my only concern is that those people are just boring and don't understand atmosphere because they are not deep, they are shallow, but we that do comprehend it's profound nature are like the deepest ocean, full of hidden treasures. =)
@MCRockers the intro sounds to me like a way of passing from live to death, u know an interlude walking though the gates, i think is not depressing at all, i think its more like finding peace with some trouble, but hey thats just me, many people can think other way

Music is not about selling.
Music is about waking up our souls, release our anger or perhaps, to think about things that we never think about.
And you know what?
This is music.
