The "Zwarte Pieten" are actually white people but they turned black cuz of the chimneys. They where called Moren becouse the black people then, came from the country below Spain: Morocco. Its not six to eight because Sinterklaas doesn't always takes the same number of zwarte pieten with him. The zwarte pieten where'nt slaves, but people who worked for Sinterklaas (he is their employer).

Sinterklaas is my favourite holiday. It's great. Some time before the actual holiday, we would place one of our shoes by the fireplace at night and sing sinterklaas songs. On the fifth of december, we would get all sorts of presents. That sinterklaas might take you to Spain was always only a story, very few parents actually tell their kids that. But we also celebrate Christmas seperately, on the 25th. Sinterklaas is not Santa! But Santa was derived from Sinterklaas. We were first.
Sinterklaas has nothing to do with christmas what so ever. We celebrate christmas just like any other country in the world. Sinterklaas is just a whole other celebration that originated in Turkey about a saint who stole from the rich and gave to the pore.
Children reason that they're black because they are the ones who go down the chimney to take the children's wish lists and give them sweets. That's it! CHILDREN ARE INNOCENT ABOUT THIS. It's been scientifically proven that skin colour is of no importance to them at that young age. As a child, I've always admired the Zwarte Pieten more than Sinterklaas. They have beautiful costumes, are always happy, can climb on the roof as if it's nothing and are actually the planners of the whole feast, whereas Sinterklaas sits on his horse, is often grumpy, stubborn and strict, doesn't really know what is happening and trusts his helpers completely, which is also a sign of respect if you ask me. His roots go back centuries and you will find him next to Sinterklaas in many differend shapes all over Europe not at all looking as an African. Now on the apparent controverse of the 'black pete' (zwarte piet): It is true that in the time Saint Nicholas was alive, it was very common to have black slaves. However, since Saint Nicholas became a person who dedicated his life to make others happy by giving (just as your Santa Claus), his black pete's became, not unlike your charished elves, voluntairy helpers on his life goal of bringing other people happiness in the dark times of the year. They are not slaves, but heroes for a just cause!

I am an American who has no issue with the wonderful Dutch Christmas traditions, unlike many criticizing here research the tradition rather than criticizing on first glance. I have had the pleasure of visiting the Netherlands three times in my life and always enjoyed the time there.
I have wanted to celebrate Christmas in the Netherlands and hope to realize this in the coming future. Compliments to the Dutch people for NOT caving in to the "political correctness" rubbish infecting the USA

Amos and Andy was a most popular comedy team with two black-faced white men talking like what they perceived as stereotypical black men being funny. Racism runs deep and it didn't occur to most Americans that this was offensive. The Dutch involvement in the slave trade also ran deep. Evidently, they have never had to reconcile this fact with such racist customs.

Many even see the difference between real black people and Zwarte Piet, a white person who's painted their face black. Only seldom I've heard of a child walk up to a black person and called them "Zwarte Piet". This Holiday is meant for kids and families to get together, only few (you being one I guess) see it as racism and instead just enjoy being with each other, the candy and gifts.

The "Zwarte Pieten" are actually white people but they turned black cuz of the chimneys. They where called Moren becouse the black people then, came from the country below Spain: Morocco. Its not six to eight because Sinterklaas doesn't always takes the same number of zwarte pieten with him. The zwarte pieten where'nt slaves, but people who worked for Sinterklaas (he is their employer).
There is no Dutch version of Santa Claus, because the American Santa is a version of the Dutch Sinterklaas.

Sinterklaas is my favourite holiday. It's great. Some time before the actual holiday, we would place one of our shoes by the fireplace at night and sing sinterklaas songs. On the fifth of december, we would get all sorts of presents. That sinterklaas might take you to Spain was always only a story, very few parents actually tell their kids that. But we also celebrate Christmas seperately, on the 25th. Sinterklaas is not Santa! But Santa was derived from Sinterklaas. We were first.

As a child, I've always admired the Zwarte Pieten more than Sinterklaas. They have beautiful costumes, are always happy, can climb on the roof as if it's nothing and are actually the planners of the whole feast, whereas Sinterklaas sits on his horse, is often grumpy, stubborn and strict, doesn't really know what is happening and trusts his helpers completely, which is also a sign of respect if you ask me. Now on the apparent controverse of the 'black pete' (zwarte piet): It is true that in the time Saint Nicholas was alive, it was very common to have black slaves. However, since Saint Nicholas became a person who dedicated his life to make others happy by giving (just as your Santa Claus), his black pete's became, not unlike your charished elves, voluntairy helpers on his life goal of bringing other people happiness in the dark times of the year. I am an American who has no issue with the wonderful Dutch Christmas traditions, unlike many criticizing here research the tradition rather than criticizing on first glance. I have had the pleasure of visiting the Netherlands three times in my life and always enjoyed the time there.
I have wanted to celebrate Christmas in the Netherlands and hope to realize this in the coming future. Compliments to the Dutch people for NOT caving in to the "political correctness" rubbish infecting the USA

Haha i live in Holland and i hate sinterklaas because i think its degrading to black people but i dont make it a problem if you check out details youll see that Holland has a really racist culture like nigger kisses (A chocolate filled with whipped cream) maybe even the most racist culture ive ever seen but that doesnt make em bad people they dont see it as racism they see it as a holiday and ive just learned to live with that. The Dutch really aren't bad people guys just a little bit weird.

Growing up in the US in the 1950s we saw Minstrel Shows in which white people in black-face, played black people singing and dancing. Amos and Andy was a most popular comedy team with two black-faced white men talking like what they perceived as stereotypical black men being funny. Racism runs deep and it didn't occur to most Americans that this was offensive. The Dutch involvement in the slave trade also ran deep. Evidently, they have never had to reconcile this fact with such racist customs.

Get loads of negroe prisoners from Negeria on a boat and trade them in the americas for goods. a few facts about this dutch phenomenom. 1. He arrives at the 3rd of december not late november. 2. he doesnt travel with black men they are from all populations they are black because they go trough chimneys. 3. he isnt santa claus we have christmas in holland too. 4. Sinterklaas is a means to make children behave good for the entire year.

Net als het verhaal van zwarte piet komt er elke keer een ander uitleg eerst was 5 dec. pakjes avond en nu is sint op 5 dec. jarig.

3rd of all: I'm not quite getting your point though, Saint Nicolas FREED the slave, not helding him hostage to work for him, so he was a free kid from that point on, however, he decided to stay with Saint Nicolas to help him so he's NOT a slave.
4th of all: We're being reminded of a World war 2 every year, which is only 70 years ago.

Some say, that Saint Nicolas freed a young negroid slave from a market, who stayed with him since then, some say he's an Italian chimney-sweep and some say that it was to riducule the Spanish who occupied The Netherlands back in the 16th century.
But can you tell me, what's racist about painting yourself to bring joy to children and moving on the tradition?

He has a flying sledge with all the presents for the children in America, flying reindeers. Many even see the difference between real black people and Zwarte Piet, a white person who's painted their face black. Only seldom I've heard of a child walk up to a black person and called them "Zwarte Piet". This Holiday is meant for kids and families to get together, only few (you being one I guess) see it as racism and instead just enjoy being with each other, the candy and gifts.

@Palettuify Kids called me Zwarte Piet and Vieze Turk growing up as a child in the Netherlands. And I'm not black nor am I Turkish, just non-white. And just because you "seldom" hear them call others that doesn't mean they "seldom" do it. You even used "seldom" instead of "never". I've always seen this as racism and Dutch people like to pretend it isn't.
