A black and tan is simply stout and ale mixed together in a glass. The whole Guinness/Bass thing, and the trick of splitting the beer into layers isn't traditional or authentic – it's just marketing. In Britain, it is traditional to simply pour a half-pint of real cask-conditioned ale of your choice into a pint glass, and top it off with Guinness. The beer mixes freely upon pouring. It's presumed that the point is to blend them, not drink them separately in layers.

I had this real life nightmare once where I went to a trendy Italian restaurant in a town near me and watched a waiter screw up a wine order and after seeing this I ordered a black and tan at the bar while waiting for a table... dare say both the guy who screwed up the opening of a bottle of wine and the doosh that gave me a Guininess and a tumbler to pour it in looked and dressed like this guy.

Sorry my friend, but ya did it WRONG. The Bass ale should be poured in slow on the side of the glass for as little head as possible, Then pour the guiness very slowly over the back of a spoon. This is the way to get the nice separation in the glass between the two,
