You ain't got no right to be offended by the truth.
You know what? I'm half nigerian and I'm glad that Sony did this commercial. Nigeria had it coming to them. During my stay there, I realized that the majority of people there scam. Not just on the internet, but in real life too. I've seen it with my own 2 eyes. Not only that, Nigeria likes Playstation over the Xbox and Wii, yet they pirate all the games and consoles. So, since they can't buy and sell PS games the fair way, why should Sony be fair and change their commercial?

I can't believe they pulled this commercial...as one of millions of people who have received HUNDREDS of letters from some "Nigerian" prince or heir, I found this hilarious. It's not like this insults anyone's race...hell, it's not even insulting Nigerians, just making light of the most popular internet scam (probably) in the world! I'm sure other countries have their American jokes, too!
you are a fool. imagine someone making an advert and saying all americans are fat..wouldnt you take offence to that? This idea that americans have that they cant just talk or walk over any country as they wish is annoying. proudly canadian
That's called topical humor. There's an internet scam (which likely originated outside of Nigeria) in which a Nigerian prince asks for your money. If I were Nigerian, I'd laugh at this whole thing.
you guys all make me laugh with the disrespectful comments n what not.. lets be honest the world likes to recognise things esp when it's bad.. Nigeria is known amongst other things for internet scams n fraud.. it doesn't mean all nigerians are smart enough to pull off such schemes it means people are ignorant enough to believe them. how bout you people listen to the commercial and get the msg than be quick to point the oh its disrespectiful card.. my sis thinks it is but i don't..
Nigerian Millionaire? As if. Anyone can walk around in that country with a few fucking measly dollars and be able to buy a fucking corporate law firm. Assuming if those dirty little shits have the intellectual capacity to practice law, of course.
I found this not insulting at all....IF anything, the way that I interpreted it, it was a compliment as I'm thinking of it like saying there are alot of millionaires in Nigeria :P Oh well though...they just made themselves seem dumber to me.
Why most Nigerians are offended by this stems mainly from the fact that someone in Sony's executive board thought that it would be ok to offend an entire nation for advertising purposes. Especially after Sony just invested millions in Nigeria.
There's a fine line between humor and ignorance and way too many people have crossed that line in the comments posted. Enough with the slandering and name calling.
You're just saying that because you're Nigerian. :P I'm kidding, obviously.
Come on. You don't see anybody throwing up a fuss about how Rep. Jeff Flake explained his voting against a bill to honor the anniversary of Confucius's birth by saying: "He who spends time passing trivial legislation may find himself out of time to read health-care bill."
Wow, well unfortunately I had no idea about the statement above being made. Can't say I'm any good about keeping up with politics but as with Sony, Rep. Jeff Flake made an uncalled for statement that show his lack of cultural sensitivity, crossing that thin line between being humorous and purposely offending others.
Uncalled for? I wouldn't say that much. He and Sony didn't so much purposely offend others - I doubt they actually took the time to think, "Yes, let's say this because it will offend people" - as they did simply not think about them.
How come no one's thrown a fuss about the "$299" commercial blatantly playing on the "gaming nerd" stereotype? It can be just as offensive as the Nigerian millionaire comment; people just have enough sense to not care.
I have no idea why no one has thrown a fuss about the gaming nerd stereotype. I can only speak for myself and say that in not being a gamer, I had no prior knowledge. And if people don't want to care about something, then that's on them.
If people are offended by something, then they have a right to express their sentiments.
But gee-whizz, you're wearing me out with your responses to my comments so I'm going to leave it at this: you're completely right about everything. Happy?
all these people slandering Nigeria and its people need to check themselves. you saw Nigeria scams "24/7" and the "ebay is plagued" with Nigerian scams. Well, where are your REAL statistics on that and not just hearsay? not only can you not believe everything you hear or read or the internet, as the ad points out, calling an ENTIRE country out is not only ignorant but shows an utter lack of intellect. If you knew any history at all, you'd understand the current state that Africa is in.
And anyone who is dumb enough to believe the content in those outlandish emails needs to do some serious soul searching. The people who fall prey to email scams are often just as money hungry as those sending the emails.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why the fuck did sony give in to a bunch of corrupt niggers who cant get their country running, and say the ad is damaging the countries reputation? what reputation lmao, sony can probably invade nigerias ass even thogh its a company not even a country
Does everything except playing PS1, PS2, Xbox, PC, Nintendo and whatever games. Oh and you also cant play your ego shooters with your mouse and you cant load the Level Editor for Fallout 3 and you cant ....
There is already a mouse controller for the PS3 u stupid? And u can connect your keyboard too. And it does play PS1 games, the older PS3s can play PS2 games and who needs to play shitbox games anyway.
wrong. actually I bought a backwards compatible ps3 and I can play all those. Also I'm currently hacking it to be able to play xbox360 games too. who want's wii - I hate cartoons. Also, yes, it functions as a computer, and you can use your mouse for them with a small amount of hacking. BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO USE YOUR MOUSE WHEN YOU CAN USE A MOTION-SENSING (Six-Axis), Interactive Vibrational-so-you-can-feel-shooting-and-explosions-etc (Dual Shock) CONTROLLER???!!!
This commercial is about the new PS3 without the backwards compatibility.
Why would I want to use a mouse? Because its much more precise and a lot faster. Try playing a strategy game like WC3 or WiC with a controller. Sure a controller is nice sometimes. I have one to play the Soul Reaver games and Assassins Creed but thats because the gameplay was made for consoles and slowed down for them.
Blue Ray is nice, yes. But the Discs are still to expencive for me, so I dont need it.
Its not like they are saying that NIGERIANS SCAM PEOPLE, they are just saying that you can't believe everything you see on the internet BECAUSE there are MILLIONS of emails sent daily from people claiming to be a Nigerian prince or what not (which they definitely are not) and saying that they need you to move money for them or some shit. Get it? It has nothing to do with the Nigerian people.
I don't know. Possibly the same thing you were trying to accomplish with yours. I see the irony of your comment on the advert is completely lost on you. Lol...at you!
People on youtube here are getting all fed up with this commercial. I told them to google some information as people assume this is a racist commercial. Clearly you're the one missing out on something here. Not to mention trolling as that comment was made 3 months ago which makes me wonder if you have better things to do. Unless of course you're a worthless piece of garbage harassing people for no apparent reason, which to me seems to be the case.
Unlike some other people, I do not make a habit of insulting people on youtube. I think Nigerians have a right to be upset about an ad that in their opinion, insults their integrity as a people (not that I totally agree that the ad does that but...) without being likened to idiots. Just like you would be upset if such an ad was made about whatever negative stereotyping whatever country you are from suffers from.
Irony: The ad is about not believing everything you read on the internet.
It's not a negative stereotype. It's a reference from the scam that ORIGINATED in Nigeria. People all over the world were affected by this so I have my doubt you even know what you are talking about. This clearly has no stereotypical or offensive reference unless you MAKE UP your own meaning of the commercial.
I agree with you. I would be angry if there was an AD that made a negative stereotype of my country. However, this is not the goal of this commercial at all. Clearly missing the point.
hahahaaaa LOL... doesn't sound offensive to me, i love Nigerians and Nigeria for whoever they maybe they are very interesting people and somehow can never stop been on the news for good or bad. and for the scam, how the crap can u fall for a 'too good to be true' email, it all springs up of the idea of the wannabe ripper getting ripped lol. life is beautifull whatever way u look at it. enjoy! lol. happy independence NIGERIA!!! LOL :)
Ouch. I'm Nigerian and have to say that this was VERY disrespectful and stereotypical.
What convinced Sony into thinking that this would be a good marketing ad?
Not to mention that it doesn't really make sense; why would HE be a NIGERIAN millionaire by going on he internet? If he's referring to fraud and scams over the internet (which I'll admit happens), he would be the one losing.
I have been to Nigeria and the people are warm and treat westerners like royalties. If you have your wits about you and aren't looking to get 'something' for 'nothing' then you should be ok.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only nigger millionaires live in white countries, where they remain so until they retire from basketball or making that rap noise. Where after two weeks they will end up bankrupt due to their nigger math and money managing skills.
I'm that laugh out loud person so im speaking for myself here but i mean....if they point fingers at where ever your from...it's going to be seen as offensive on way or the other.
P.S: Sony did change the AD to ..."that's how World War 1 started"...after complaint from the nigerian government.
Even if there is a thin line btw d comic in this ad and being disrespectful, I think SONY went way beyond the line in this one. To think of it, did you know that over 90% of gamers in nigeria own atleast 2 sony game machines? Difficult to believe, but do a research if in doubt. Honestly I didn't see this ad as a smart marketing strategy, except if part of the strategy was to get rid of its Nigerian Market
Hello All, i agree that the Nigerian Nation is well known for the 419 scam, but wait a munite lets analyse the scam, they dont force you to part wth your money do they? they offer you a very good deal for almost nothing and you greedy faggots think because were african were foolish and so you try to pay little or less for a fortune, and then you get noting, its just feeding your greed. your all too greedy i must say.
If you've ever been around the world you would know Nigerians are awful people. From Tokyo to L.A. Don't talk shit if you never encountered the subject matter.
Lived in five different countries including Tokyo for three years. Tokyo has immigrant problems like the U.S. and Nigerians are large source of low level street crime. Luckily, when I was accosted by a group of them in Roppongi I stood up to them and hit two of them in the face with a bottle. They got arrested but not me. Cuz I'm cool and they're awful people. So their.
Well, I've was raised in a mult-cultural society where I can tell the difference between Koreans and Chinese and Nigerians and Ethiopians. I'm responding late because I just received this message about 6 months after I posted a comment. But, I'm sure your uneducated mind doesn't understand that-so I'll put it simply: "When U experience other cultures U can decipher from their appearances what country they are from."
Nigeria is a great country with challenges most originating from the West.??????? wtf are u people drunk?? the black man was born greedy and will die so, why do u think on black african country has never succeeded?? greed. unfortuatly in half nigerian live ther 26 years and if id disapers from the map one day i wont lose a sec of sleep.
The video is hilarious and I'm sure even Nigerians are laughing their ass off about it. This is not a "racist" ad, it's a comical ad. Everyone that sees this ad will laugh because they have received emails from "Nigerian millionaires" a hundred or so times. C'mon. Learn to laugh people.
On a serious note. I'm truly scared by the amount of actual racist comments I see here on You Tube. It's disturbing to say the least.
Well it obviously would, shouting homophobic insults has nothing to do with racism and if you are just a little faggot who is butt hurt with what I recently said, then you can fuck off!
Because I would rather be homophobic than racist any day!
Nigeria is a great country with challenges most originating from the West. unfortunately she has been dubbed a SCAM nation due to flawed statistics of email origins. for instance, PC virus evolve daily , are they from Nigeria? HYIP is no Nigerian. However, i see the advert and its comment as just slanggish and should not be taken serious. but SONY should apologise clearly. All the multinationals that came into the country to teach these scams and fraud shd leave. well i blame the govt!
C'mon - you have to know that it's a joke - but it's based on a premise of reality. What about all the jokes about Americans creating nothing but fat trailer trash & debt. They are jokes - it wasn't meant to demean anybody - but to sell products...
They should offer the Nigerians a settlement of 3 billion dollars. The only thing the Nigerians have to do is to transfer 100.000 dollars to an account i Japan to release the funds. ;D
lol if you have $299 in nigeria you might as well be called a millionaire. ha ha . If your from nigeria and this pisses you off. good! Cuz how ever is getting mad about something as stupid as this is dumb and should go out buy a gun and some bullets. Take it home you know open the box load the gun place in mouth and pull the trigger cuz your retarded.
at least an African nation for that matter...not even cool, I don't really expect other people to not get offended, African nations have always been viewed in a negative connotation by the West... i think we're getting used to this by now..its all turned into popular culture.....smh
or anything else for that matter then I would be cool with it. Then off to this whole 419 scam...i ammm soooo tired of people just targeting Nigeria as the ONLY 419 scam in the freaking Universe, yes i get the emails, well I used to...and you know what?? i delete them!! the fact of the matter is that scams are every where especially in this US, wanna know the worst scam of all time??? MIRDOFF!! yep i said it, the worst and the most degrading to the economy, stop attacking Nigerians dammit
wow are you kidding me?? Although i do not think this commercial is racist, it is definatley touching the line. I understand that commercials, ads etc. need to be comical to grab the audience's attention, but this is just being "comically insulting". Lets think about it, which other commercial, ads etc. insults one's nationality, religon, race etc. the fact that they used the GENERAL term " NIGERIAN millionaire" that is touching the line, if they had just said a "419 millionaire" or
Ok so sony pissed off Nigeria, and sony pulled the commercial. But what can Nigeria really do? Jack fucking shit is what because Sony is based in Japan. It's not like they can wage war on a company and if they could, my money would be on Sony.
shut up u dumb prick, they already waged war and would cut of all forms of trade with sony, which by the way has a market of 33million people in nigeria alone. Lets see what that does in these hardtimes.
We at Sony apologize for our insensitive portrayal of your country as a hive of scam artists. We have the utmost respect for the great country of Nigeria and its people. In recompense, we would like to give you $1,000,000 as our way of saying sorry. All we will need from you is a number for a checking account in which to deposit the funds and a processing fee of $5000 (this will be added to the deposit of $1,000,000 to reimburse you.) Once again, we humbly apologize.
I am a Nigerian but I didn't find the commercial offensive. It was a joke based on the reality that there are Nigerian scammers out there who con people via email and the like. It is what it is and it doesnt mean all Nigerians are corrupt. No decent Nigerian should be offended by this, and the govt is silly if truly demanding an apology. Nigeria is not even among the top 10 corrupt countries in the world (check forbes or transparency international). No apology demanded here. Its funny actually.
Ya thats why sony has changed its ad and deleted the scene, because they have a good sense of humour right. You are clearly as stupid as the people who fall for those dumb scams. Bernie madoff is an american who scammed people with even bigger scams why not use. Or how about the fact that when u have that green passport and u apply for a job on the international ground and u havent commit a single crime u have to pay the price becos of ads like this and they dont give u the job cos ur nigerian.
its ignorant fools like u that would be the 1st to scream racism the day happens to u. Keep enjoying the humour and dont behavior like it doesnt affect u fool.
Wow. touchy touchy. It seems u are the ignorant one. Definition of racism: "hatred or intolerance of another race or other races"..how does this ad point to the fact that Sony is racist? The company Cristal saying they dont like hip hop culture embracing their champagne is racist. Cracker Barrel can be said to be racist due to all the lawsuits we have heard about in the past several years. But Sony, making a joke in an ad about Nigerian scammers (especially when they do exist) is racist? Wow!

uberpwnage15 2 years ago
I found this not insulting at all....IF anything, the way that I interpreted it, it was a compliment as I'm thinking of it like saying there are alot of millionaires in Nigeria :P Oh well though...they just made themselves seem dumber to me.
NeroRadec707 2 years ago
Why most Nigerians are offended by this stems mainly from the fact that someone in Sony's executive board thought that it would be ok to offend an entire nation for advertising purposes. Especially after Sony just invested millions in Nigeria.
There's a fine line between humor and ignorance and way too many people have crossed that line in the comments posted. Enough with the slandering and name calling.
ladyafrika 2 years ago 2
You're just saying that because you're Nigerian. :P I'm kidding, obviously.
Come on. You don't see anybody throwing up a fuss about how Rep. Jeff Flake explained his voting against a bill to honor the anniversary of Confucius's birth by saying: "He who spends time passing trivial legislation may find himself out of time to read health-care bill."
KajNrig 2 years ago
Wow, well unfortunately I had no idea about the statement above being made. Can't say I'm any good about keeping up with politics but as with Sony, Rep. Jeff Flake made an uncalled for statement that show his lack of cultural sensitivity, crossing that thin line between being humorous and purposely offending others.
ladyafrika 2 years ago
Uncalled for? I wouldn't say that much. He and Sony didn't so much purposely offend others - I doubt they actually took the time to think, "Yes, let's say this because it will offend people" - as they did simply not think about them.
How come no one's thrown a fuss about the "$299" commercial blatantly playing on the "gaming nerd" stereotype? It can be just as offensive as the Nigerian millionaire comment; people just have enough sense to not care.
KajNrig 2 years ago
Also, duh me. The two commercials are one and the same.
KajNrig 2 years ago
I have no idea why no one has thrown a fuss about the gaming nerd stereotype. I can only speak for myself and say that in not being a gamer, I had no prior knowledge. And if people don't want to care about something, then that's on them.
If people are offended by something, then they have a right to express their sentiments.
But gee-whizz, you're wearing me out with your responses to my comments so I'm going to leave it at this: you're completely right about everything. Happy?
ladyafrika 2 years ago
Wasn't exactly trying to start an argument, if that's what this was. So if my comments pissed you off or anything.
...sorry?
(Also, case in point. :P)
KajNrig 2 years ago
No, I'm not pissed off. Just wasn't in the mood for back and forth commentary.
Just read my comment and I realise that I do sound like a pissy ol' fart so I apologize as well.

all these people slandering Nigeria and its people need to check themselves. you saw Nigeria scams "24/7" and the "ebay is plagued" with Nigerian scams. Well, where are your REAL statistics on that and not just hearsay? not only can you not believe everything you hear or read or the internet, as the ad points out, calling an ENTIRE country out is not only ignorant but shows an utter lack of intellect. If you knew any history at all, you'd understand the current state that Africa is in.
ladyafrika 2 years ago
And anyone who is dumb enough to believe the content in those outlandish emails needs to do some serious soul searching. The people who fall prey to email scams are often just as money hungry as those sending the emails.

wrong. actually I bought a backwards compatible ps3 and I can play all those.
KillerNumberX 2 years ago
did I mention Blu-ray playing?
KillerNumberX 2 years ago
This commercial is about the new PS3 without the backwards compatibility.
Why would I want to use a mouse? Because its much more precise and a lot faster. Try playing a strategy game like WC3 or WiC with a controller. Sure a controller is nice sometimes. I have one to play the Soul Reaver games and Assassins Creed but thats because the gameplay was made for consoles and slowed down for them.
Blue Ray is nice, yes. But the Discs are still to expencive for me, so I dont need it.
Thoran666 2 years ago
...says the person too poor to buy a PS3.

How a country demands an apology when they refuse to govern their own country for scams and such is beyond me.
Nigerian scams are extremely common. Ebay and craigslist are plagued with them.
neilp4453 2 years ago
Its not like they are saying that NIGERIANS SCAM PEOPLE, they are just saying that you can't believe everything you see on the internet BECAUSE there are MILLIONS of emails sent daily from people claiming to be a Nigerian prince or what not (which they definitely are not) and saying that they need you to move money for them or some shit. Get it? It has nothing to do with the Nigerian people.

mamixalot 2 years ago
You're an idiot.
People on youtube here are getting all fed up with this commercial. I told them to google some information as people assume this is a racist commercial. Clearly you're the one missing out on something here. Not to mention trolling as that comment was made 3 months ago which makes me wonder if you have better things to do. Unless of course you're a worthless piece of garbage harassing people for no apparent reason, which to me seems to be the case.
c0nv1ct1337 2 years ago
Unlike some other people, I do not make a habit of insulting people on youtube. I think Nigerians have a right to be upset about an ad that in their opinion, insults their integrity as a people (not that I totally agree that the ad does that but...) without being likened to idiots. Just like you would be upset if such an ad was made about whatever negative stereotyping whatever country you are from suffers from.
Irony: The ad is about not believing everything you read on the internet.
mamixalot 2 years ago
It's not a negative stereotype. It's a reference from the scam that ORIGINATED in Nigeria. People all over the world were affected by this so I have my doubt you even know what you are talking about. This clearly has no stereotypical or offensive reference unless you MAKE UP your own meaning of the commercial.
I agree with you. I would be angry if there was an AD that made a negative stereotype of my country. However, this is not the goal of this commercial at all. Clearly missing the point.

LOL :)
koolcube1 2 years ago 8

By the way: im nigerian.

It's no so much disrespectful but it's sorta not the best way to advertise.
Singling a nation out always stirs up contreversy.
IyeksI 2 years ago
Even if there is a thin line btw d comic in this ad and being disrespectful, I think SONY went way beyond the line in this one. To think of it, did you know that over 90% of gamers in nigeria own atleast 2 sony game machines? Difficult to believe, but do a research if in doubt. Honestly I didn't see this ad as a smart marketing strategy, except if part of the strategy was to get rid of its Nigerian Market

Wow. touchy touchy. Wow!
