  • Once Federer gets it to Gonzo's backhand its over.

  • Gonzo simply wasn't good enough, Fed made minced meat out of him. Gonzo's slice backhand was definitely a big weakness, apparently he's only able to hit a flat backhand when perfectly positioned. Obviously, one can't win against Fed when one entire side is ineffectual for creating pressure let alone winners. I guess the moral is: one good forehand does not make a slam-winner.

  • I wish Gonzales could get back to this level.

  • TODO EN INGLISH SHSHSH

  • truly they were 2 best fh on tour that day, good sir! Sad that FG is no more:(

  • gonzalez reached at the boss and lost!!!he didnt finish the game

  • I remember this tournament because gonzalez was beating everyone using the strange combination of that use forehand and then that cake slice but it didn't trouble federer at all

  • Basta o Federer subir na esquerda do Gonzalez.

  • If only Federer could play this way... :( cannot expect him to play the way he used to play in 2007 .. But whatever it may be ...Roger is the best and will be best forever.. :)

  • long live Federer! Sorry Nadal - you won't be #1 again.

  • @jalanmills Neither will Federer lol!!!

  • @VerdascoFan kiss my ass

  • Gonzo's forehand is huge but his backhand is a huge liability. He slices almost everything and even his slices land short and don't have a great deal of bite on them.

  • great upload mate.

  • @ispaht He had hip and something else surgery about a year ago. He played Wimbledon and lost in the third or fourth round I think.

  • Where the hell is Gonzalez nowadays?

  • sinceraly I don' understand why gonazales have used only slice backhands , making a passive play, he have a good top backhands why he didn't used it? he musted to play on forehands diagonal against roger, because is only place where fernando is more strong then roger

  • @tsonga92 yes, he seen to don't know how to do an agressive backhand

  • i miss the green courts at australia!!! :(

  • @guraiden you could hardly see the ball on these courts. my eyes hurt

  • ni 1 set le saco que desgracia ajajjajajaja

  • very entertaining match. thanks

  • gonza i think has the worst backhand on tour

  • would this guy stop slicing!? gosh......

  • federer could be give the tournament to gonzales. 0 grand slams to gonza and 10 to federer. very different. Go federer. god bless gonza

  • @artur4467

    haahahahahaha no.

  • @t3tsubo no too cause i´m biggest fan of federer go roger "!

  • federer could be give the tournament to gonzales. 0 grand slams to gonza and 10 to federer. very different. G

  • GONZO SHOULD HAVE WON :(

  • federer gano esta final x ser federer. Gonzalez la perdio x ser gonzalez.

  • @turriense jajjaja lamentablemente si

  • damn

  • Chilean GO HOME xD jajaja

  • Love watching Federer continuously pushing him into the bushes on the side of the court

  • Gonzalez's forehand was the only thing preventing him from a complete humiliation in that match

  • those little backhand slices don't do shit to federer... if 2007 was gonzalez's best year then he should just quit now...

  • 9:33 never seen Roger react like that before a match point :), I like when he shows emotions on the court!

  • el problema dle feña en este aprtido fue que jugo mucho al slice

si hubiera ocupado mas su derecha de lo normal en los servicios de federer (que en este torneo estuvo increible como pocas veces) hubiera ganado el torneo...

  • federer needs to get a gd backhand. its the only thing missing in his game.

  • @localwarzone yeah his backhand sucks, he just hit an amazing backhand on match point

  • Lol, gonzo keeps on running into the stands.

  • The reason why Nadal beats Federer on the big stages, and Gonzalez couldn't this time?

Both Nadal and Gonzalez have incredible forehands. But Nadal has a backhand.

  • @imavaughanstar Gonzo actually has a solid backhand when he swings through instead of slicing, but tends to play defensively w/ his backhand by hitting slice returns for whatever reason. He used the slice BH very nicely against Nadal in AO 07, because Rafa didn't have the power, ball placement, and aggression that he improved when he became the best player in the world. But he basically set up Fed for some winners with the slice here. Had he hit it flat he would have actually had a chance.

  • @JForcE777 exactly. He set him up for 'some' winners. 'Some' winners does not win grand slams. Furthermore, he couldn't even properly grind with him, because slicing it just let Federer crush him out with a forehand or come to the net to put it away. Notice the one other guy besides Nadal who has had considerable success against Federer at Grand Slams, Novak Djokovic, has arguably the best two-handed backhand on the tour, with which he can rally endlessly or hit winners frequently?

  • @imavaughanstar yeah man ... gonzo backhand is so unpredictable, even he sometimes doesn´t know when works

  • Damn....federer is pretty much making gonzalez moan and scream every point......

  • Gonzo in a fight...

    Him: I've got a gun.

    Gonzalez: I've got my forehand.

  • that point starting at 9:17...after roger wins it to set up triple match points....that scream is really inspiring....such a dynamic player if you take a closer look...really emotional..but just knows when to utilize it to his advantage

  • lolzz...look at gonzalez's expression at 4:47,totally gone and out

  • gonzales is a funny guy

  • 4:49 Look how light Fed is on the feeds when preparing that dropvolley putaway! Might be an ok easy putaway but the execution is spot on!

  • look at Roger's movement at 5:31-5:54 .... incredible footwork

  • @supersonic622 YEAH, so many baby-steps to set up his shots. he's great.

  • Gonzalez is annoying with his slice backhand. He needs to use more of his actual backhand.

  • @misterlonely1446 i agree he uses it way too much, if gonzo becomes more agressive with his shot making he will win a major because his forehand and backhand are both lethal!

  • Yes, Fed´s peak... maybe... the rally from 7.32 is THE PEAK. of the peak. Spiderman...It is almost silly.

  • 3:49 if that shot hit federer, he would not been able to have his twins lol

  • Federer is not human!

  • Gonzo's forehand was so hot and deadly in that tournament that even mighty Fed had to avoid playing it most of the match. Great quality video. Thanks for posting!

  • gonzalez is just abusing that slice backhand

  • thanks for this video.

  • Gonzalez should have hit his BH more aggressively rather than just slice

  • Sorry, i'm getting exited wtching these clips...Look at the rush on the 8:26 point, lightning ot the net, boom volley

  • the volley at the 4:58 point is the volley your tennis coach tells you to hit when he's smashing a basket of balls at you. It's clean, effective and fucking sexy to watch every single time i replay it :)

  • ..with nadals clay court season, federer cant be world number one again and break sampras' record with such mediocer results for the rest of the season. In his mono year and the beginning of 09 he was still making the semi's of masters. It just disturbs me to hear roger federer say that a quaters at wimbledon is a 'good result'. and again i only critisize because im a huge fan, so be careful before you go insulting me cos im not holding the guy telling him how great he is

  • @Jamus182 he can...he just has to win US and say a couple of masters 1000 and he surely will be no.1 again..! But Considering nadal's form ... i dont see anyone beating him ... Even Federer has to play his best to win!!!

  • @Jaishankar100 true, i think its getting to a point where feds just beating him self at times, and thats why i get a bit irritated. I duno whats gonna happen with nadal, just because each season he has done so well in, he has then had to miss some part of it. Nadal is playing great tennis, and with del po still out, its hard to see hm not at least make the semi's. Plus, with fed now ranked third, they could meet in the semis

  • @Jamus182 I doubt that Fed will be #3 for the US open, during the whole us hardcourt swing he will retake #2 from Joker.

  • @TennisEuphoria Do you think? If im not wrong djoko has a semi (maybe less) and a final to defend. Fed a quater and a title. there the only points hes gonna go for and if he doesnt win them b2b, which i'm 99% sure he wont, cos of the dismal masters displays earlier in the year. I just dont see him moving from three unless he gets the USO, and that will only be after the tournament

  • ...not easily forgotten, but i think something needs to be done. Now all you tennis posers who read that and dare to say to me about 16 slams blah blah and you have nothing..I'm a tennis player and fan, I love tennis and will for the rest of my life. Dont go telling me what is happening at the moment is just s blip, or injury, I obvioulsy still think he can win slams, but im worried, and you probably should be to, cos unless your going to win all four slams in the year....

  • .... if you look at certain situations..like the time Del Po broke in that second set.. I feel nowadays when he comes to the net, its just a bluff with no real intent. you watch someone like steffan edberg and hes got his nose over the net, he's on his toes looking for that next volley, where with rog, he seems to think hes got such good hands, which he has, but thats no excuse to not bend your knee's and get down to the volley. The volley is the most technically easy thing to learn, and its....

  • I apologise if you think im being a dick, but this is only cos im as much as big a fed fan as every one else.

Roger, stop being such a stubborn cunt.....look at the tennis you played while Tony Roach was watching over him. His net play was clinical, but more importantly smart. I honestly cant remember the last time i saw a drop volley. Under Roach, he seemed to never over think a situation, when he came into the net, it was because he wanted to.....

  • I think this was one of the smartest games by Federer ever. I'm thinking he scouted Gonzalez before this match and saw that anytime people gave him a forehand they would lose.

Fed was smart and hit everything big (or short) to the backhand ... creamed the approach shot and then (most importantly) CAME IN after the approach with spot-on volleys.

Without the volleys I don't think he'd have won, and it's something Gonzalez's previous opponents lacked. Amazing match by Fed

  • gonzo practically almost always slices the ball in the backhand. i guess it's kinda useful but really annoying...

  • Fed didnt even give a shot to his forehand. If there is a chance for gonzalez to use forehand its either very deep or angled and he is unable to attack.

  • gonzalez so shoulda won that first set 6-4, but unfortunately his weakness of a poor mentality shows. if he had a huge mentality, hed be so incredible. he'd be world no.2 i reckon if his mental state was very good. cauz when u think bout it, his game is perfect, tuned to perfection. hes got all the shots like federer does.

  • jizzed so hard when i watched it back in 2007

  • Federers performance was even better when you consider in what kind of hot streak Gonzales was, he had absolutely thrashed both Nadal (2,4,1) and Haas (1,3,1) in their previous matches.

  • Gonzo reminds me a little of nadal in this match, both the grunts and the way he never gives up a point, and the level especially in the first set are allso up with a good nadal!

Allso it´s sad for gonzo cause this was probably his best tourny he will ever play but unfortunately for him it was allso one of federers better ones, and fed at his best will of cause allways beat gonzo at his best!

  • yer this was feds best performance at a grand slam i think, not dropping a single set throughout, amazing!

  • Gonzalez's has the coolest grunt on the tour, and I really, really, really frown upon grunting.

Fire vs ice as far as their personalities are concerned.

  • Is that Mary Joe Fernandez at 2:59 on the right next to Mirka?

  • @casamir111 yes it is

  • @casamir111 yeah.

  • Federer had brilliant gameplay, he knew that Gonzalez has a big forehand which can devastating power, so he played his ball to gonzalez's backhand well. But when Gonzalez put the trigger on his backhand, he can really beat anyone, especially you see in the 8th game, doing some great damage.

Gonzalez should be more aggressive and take the early set.

  • two fast runner ,only difference on backhand and some serve variety ,great player!

  • ugh... i hate those slice back hands from gonzalez

  • Great match by Federer. What sets him apart, other than his obviously brilliant game, is his ability to want it more than his opponent, no matter how many majors he's won. Gonzalez gave it everything he had in this match, but Fed just wouldn't be denied. Some greats points played in this one.

  • Gonzalez played a great match, probably the best in his career, but Federer it's on the other side, and the 2006-2007 Federer was unstoppable.

  • good match despite a straight set win by federer

  • I can't believe the court used to be green!!!!Thank you Aussie open for changing the colour of the court last year....I remember watching these matches and not being able to see the ball...It's sooooo much better now for the fans and the players!!!

  • 9:32 federer screams XD

  • 2:42 - he should have tryed to hit the line here instead

  • 8:07 : puta la weá weon! xD

  • wow i love the australian open it is the most fun ,wimbledon is the most epic ,roland garros is the most competitive, and the us open is the most energetic

  • 7:32 queda demostrado porque Federer :es el mejor tenistas de todos los tiempos (:

    Grande Fernando :D

  • this is federer the great fire extinguisher.

  • Wow, federer plays net WELL. He has it all.

  • Federer ist einfach der beste. der perfecte spieler......

  • gonzalez should have used his top spin backhand a lot more than he did

  • He hadn't developed his backhand at that time.

  • @squinty1292

Oh that is ridiculous. He's in a grand slam final and you think he didnt have a "developed" backhand? He slices the ball to get a reply with lots of topspin so he can step in and rip it flat. He knows he has to remain consistent on his backhand wing to be devastating with his forehand.

  • would have been very interesting if gonzo won the 1st like he should have

  • @butterflycaught900, He shouldn't have even been serving for the set. He caught a lucky net cord in a critical moment at 4-4 and it wound up putting him up 5-4, which he preceded to blow.

There is no way that Gonzo SHOULD have won the first set.

  • @SSky06 if he was competing close enough to federer that he can go 5-4 up from just one net cord he deserves the set

  • @butterflycaught900

That makes no sense. So he should win the set because he caught a lucky net cord? In fact, that proves he shouldn't have won the first set. Lucky does not win you best of five set matches.

  • @SSky06 my point is he was matching federer in the set. if federer was dominating him, 1 lucky net cord wouldn't matter. but anyway, lucky does win you matches. federer has won plenty of important points with let cords. there was one last night against Simon which gave him 40-30 instead of a break point in the 5th. its a part of tennis.

  • @butterflycaught900

So once again, because he was "matching him" he "should have" won the first set? It's totally irrelevant that he was "matching" him.

And I'm pretty sure you're not going to find many matches where lucky netcords actually determine the outcome of a match. They influence point-to-point, but it's incredibly rare for someone to get lucky and win a 5 set match just because of the sheer length of the match.

  • @SSky06 he should have won the first because he served for it.

  • @butterflycaught900 but he's a quitter ... as usual.

  • @butterflycaught900 would have been the only set taken of federer in the tournament that year...

  • lucky for rafa federer forgot how to serve and volley

  • Actually Fed served and volleyed the last time they played. Fed won.

  • gonzalez, stop slicing! it's annoying...luckily recently you've been hitting flatter

  • my god... it annoys me so much how gonzalez over uses his slice backhand.. i feel like smacking gonzales in the face. jesus christ.

  • gonzales slices too many time on his backhand

  • That is his strategy in order to stay consistent on his backhand side and not allow his opponent to get offensive since the ball stays low. And then he moves them around with the slice and baits them to try to hit a ball to his forehand side and then he takes the advantage with his forehand. Or if they don't take the bait, he waits till he has a good opportunity to flatten out his backhand and hit one down the line. Very effective tactic but Roger came to the net too often during this match.

  • did you see, I can't remember where, but it's in the video - Federer moves into the net quickly as Gonzalez is executing a slice backhand - which I find an interesting tactic, because as the ball moves slower, he has more time to get to the next and play a slice volley, for example.

  • especially near the end of the match. After a few slices, Federer just said "fine, I'll just come over there and finish it at the net" which he did.

  • yeah he does. He's adapted a topspin backhand since 07 =]

  • Thats right, he has been working on that with his coach lately and he now more often pulls of the top spin, but the technique is not that good. The slice worked fine against Haas and others. He kept the ball low with the slice backhand and the opponent had to lift it over the net and then he fired with his forehand. But it did not work vs Roger ;-) Of course it didnt ;-))

  • That consistent slice backhand is what got him to the final in the first place. Gonzalez played great tennis here; he just didn't have the all-around attacking game to challenge Federer's serve.

  • Yes, but he doesn't do this anymore.

  • genious

  • I think gonzalez's forehand it's not flat. it's with topspin...

  • This, Del potro AO 09 and the Canas beatdown were his best matches ever.

  • Yes i agree but more specifically the two best flat forehands on the tour.

The two best top-spin forehands are Nadal's and Verdasco's.

You can't really say any of the fours forehands is better than the last.

  • indeed a super match.

    Gonzalez's Forehand vs Federer's volleys.

    Haha!!

  • Gonzalez forehand was a dominating weapon in this match. Federer's game plan was so effective. For so many points, Fed would play to Gonz's backhand and when Gonz was on the run, Fed would come up to net and finish to point off into the open court, usually on the forehand side with either a good deep volley to set up the point, or a short drop volley.

  • You are right ! he needs a new tactic to beat Federer, i wanted gonzo to win because he was owning everyone in AO 07

  • But so was Roger owning everyone in AO 07, in fact, he didn't lose a single set in the whole tournament.

  • what forehand grip does gonzalez use?

  • semiwestern

  • 7:20 is that serena williams?!?

  • Looks like her Oo

  • @vaulcan yep

  • in my opinion shitty commentators

after the matchball: and he needs one....................

  • lol that ruined the moment for me.

  • well they said before fed's serve: "3 championship points" after the point: "only needs one"

  • one of the best perfomances of the greatest of all time..go roger!!!

  • y was there a female umpire?

  • Qq um que fala que Federer não é DE LONGE o melhor tenista da história não entende nada de tenis. Acabei de ver a semi com Nadal. Agora a final, é chileno... o buraco é mais embaixo.

  • In my opinion this was federer at his peak

  • yeah defenetly the best perfomance!!

  • @nitrousdaking i completely agree. that match against roddick in the semis was ridiculous!

  • @nitrousdaking Gonzo too!

  • @nitrousdaking Gonzo too! Too bad he met Federer in the final... unstoppable!

  • I love how every point goes like silent because Fed keeps hitting to the backhand. Then as soon as it goes to the forehand, there's this massive grunt from Gonzo.

    Love 'em both <33

  • Roger at his best, he won this slam without losing a single set.

  • One should not say "Aussie Open", but rather "Australian Open".

  • Gonzalez is better than Marcelo Rios ever was.

  • tangoseven70 , yes this was Federer at his best. He reached his peak around the end of 2006, start of 2007. The tennis masters cup 2006 and this AO 2007 (where he didn't drop a set in the entire tournament) are probably some of his best tournaments ever.

  • I didn't even know Gonzalez until I watched the passed Roland Garros.......

And now after watching him there, here and ine the vid with Rafa I'm really amazed........This guy is a menace!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm just a fan, not an expert...was this Federer at his best? He plays so beautifully here (as does Gonzo). Fed today seems like just a shadow of what he looks like here. He is still very, very good, but less fluid now, less seamless as a player than what he exhibited here. Age and the mental piggyback of Nadal have taken their toll. Hope he continues to play well at Wimbledon.

  • the 2 best forehands on the tour right now.

  • If you watch the gonzalez nadal match before this one then you can really compare the way federer and nadal try to deal with gonzalez's slicing and huge forehand. federer deals with it perfectly, attacking at the right moments and injecting pace when he had to whereas nadal just didn't know what to do. Another demonstration of why federer is the best ever and nadal will only ever be a superhuman, one-dimensional, drugged up hacker.

  • let's not be too harsh on nadal, he was only 20 when he played gonzalez, there was improvement needed, and he never lost to gonzalez again afterwards

  • federer is pure class. gonzo is pure grunt. so epic watching them play =)

  • Gonzalez's great. One of the best, if not THE best forehand nowadays.

  • Both players are exceptional, but maybe federer is a little bit more exceptional.

  • Learn english then talk.

    Tks intruZo1991 for uploading.
