Kool and the Gang kicked Ass, I still rock this joint in my car (Full Blast) till my windows shake. I was 13 when this came out and I still have the Long Version of Open Sesame. Long Live our Greats, Kool and the Gang, and Earth Wind nd Fire.
@sp4armyguy1 - The LP was also called Open Sesame and it was released in 1976. Not yet reissued domestically on CD but there's an import version coming out 5/3/11.
@drsloan Thanks for the heads-up. Kool & The Gang is one of my favorite groups. I remember them when I was in high school performing at some of the local venues.
This used to be my SHIT when I was little.. I still crank it now. And people think I'm crazy cause I say Kool and the Gang is one of my ALL time favorite bands...
Ain't nothin' like 70's funk y'all!!!! I was 15/16 years old when this masterpiece came out. I feel so blessed to have been in my teens when funk was going strong. :-)
@jack60r 'Kool' Bell always played a little back if not even with the front. Being that the horn section drives this tune, it'd be a sin not to put them out front.
That's why these 50+ year old brothers, along with the original Earth Wind and Fire members, together or not doing their own thing are still eating, paying the mortgage and maybe even driving a "Kaddilick" or two! Props and Respect to Newark, New Jersey for producing these 'scientist of sound' who by the 'sound' of things are still 'mathematically putting it down'!
This is classic. Kool plays the bass. Saw them play this song in Miami in the 70's without the extra horns and it sounded almost the same. Just as good. 55 year old school lova.
Thanks for posting this. I'm a big fan of Ronald Bell (sax); the man behind many of their tunes, old and new. As a sax player, I appreciate his raw tone, his signature altissimo "A," and the Coltrane influence in his solos. Check out his solo on this clip: simple and soulful. The horns are tight!
Earth Wind & Fire Phoenix Horns and this horn section? Hmmm....not really a fair comparison but give props where it's due. Big credit to Brother Robert "Kool" Bell for auditioning and hiring brothers equally as tight as days gone by! Same goes for Brother Maurice White and the present EWF horn section; not quite Tower of Power, Phoenix Horns or the old Chicago horn section but this is wonderful to see and hear anyway. Salaam!
Salaam! I'm overjoyed to see the younger brothers demonstrate musicianship. It's a joy to see that we still produce actual musicians rather than persons 'skilled' in manipulating drum machines, TASCAM boards, and concerts where all the persons on stage have caught publicized 'cases'. I say a return to musicianship and away with fake groups like Day 26 and the lot of them! Shazzam!
I agree. The synthesized crap a lot of people call music these days NEVER sounds as fresh, skilled, or flat out good as a band like this actually playing any instrument no matter what the genre is. Half the "musicians" these days probably have no idea instruments can produce sounds like this without being connected to a computer or midi device.
And yes I know there is a synth involved, but it's minor and in the background, not 90% of the sound being produced.
It's on their self titled album "Open Sesame" that was recorded in 1976. I have it on the remastered CD. Parts 1 and 2 were made and a extended 12' disco version.
I grew up listening to Kool & the Gang. Hasn't been another band like them to come along outside of EWF and the Ohio Players that sound exactly like their records when you see them in concert. Kool & the Gangs entire band are excellent musicians. No computerized sound here, like what you get from the music being played today.
Since about 1967, they been doin' what they do!!! Quincy Jones went on and on about the horn arrangement for this tune. That in itself is one of the greatest compliments any real musician could get!!!!! Lon live Koll and the motherf---ing Gang!!!!
Because they had to survive the '80 and they did it well ! Most funk bands were fading during those years while K&TG was running through the '90. other bands like Earth Wind& Fire didn't do well in the '80 (exept live shows). in the early '90 the funk came alive again and lots of bands revived themselfs since.
I know - you are right but the music was still crap! I was glad to see them make some money but Funky Stuff, Hollywood Swinging, Jungle Boogie etc were SO much better than their pop stuff it was like 2 diferrent bands.
(BTW, I saw EW&F live in England in 1979 and they were great!)
Kool love that Zon Bass! always enjoyed that you keep Bass Playn real, not into showcasin solos etc. which is cool but gots ta respect the real Meat n tatter Bassplayer!
