It's an acquired taste. Divine Intervention by Slayer is a really hard album to get into at first, but it gets pretty fucking wonderful if you give it time.

Also, hardcore as a genre isn't looked down upon by knowledgeable metal heads. However, genres such as metal core, deathcore et al are.
