I love this song. The line "and everything was aquamarine" is something I use from time to time when talking about a time in America when there was real hope. We were going to the moon and we knew we were going to go further. Just absolutely love this song.
Back in the wee 80s I remember Jef Scott, handing out flyers for club shows in the Hollywood scene. I was going to a recording school on Sunset Blvd and a lot of stuff was going on. He impressed me at the time and I remember that he seemed really hungry. It's fun to see that he kept up with it. What's he doing now?
Great song, but terrible video. The footage is too on the nose. He actually puts on a hat when the lyrics say "wear a hat". A song like this needs something more metaphorical. Still one of my favorites songs. GREAT GUITAR SOLO!!!
I loved this song!!!! The whole album was amazing. I had the cassette tape and honestly played it so much I wore it out. I couldn't find another copy so finding this is just awesome! Thanks so much for sharing!
Bought the CD secondhand in Knoxville after hearing on the radio in '92 I guess. My girls (aged 9 and 7) and I couldn't stop playing it! "Smoke a cigarette and wear a hat..." priceless. Plus the shredding guitar solo! I dig the Foo Fighters idea. Better yet...some record company should re-release it!
wow! i remember this album so well, i was just seperated from my wife when this came out, (fall 91) and this meant alot to me, i had the cassette and wore the hell out of it... fun to find it 20 yrs on... i was reading something, came across the word 'aquamarine', triggered a memory, google did the rest... come to montreal sometime!

Why the hell is this song not available on iTunes? I search for it about once a month, hoping. It wasn't that damn obscure, I used to play it on my radio show when I was a DJ.
Also, funny that searching this brings up Fastball's "The Way" as a related vid, always did think they were similar and both great. Not saying Fastball ripped it off, just that the latter immediately summoned this track in my mind from the instant I first heard it.
This song was huge in New Zealand, rotation on 89XFM 1992, we didn't see the video until much later, i'd envisaged a Jim Morrison clone and some vague cohorts, the Harmonies should have been a clue really, but I really loved the underlying drive in this song, very classic rock at times, nice imagery in the lyric, well sung, nice lead. I still dig this track massively
@bowiestones1 Was that 89X where the Djs turned up for work one day and the plug was pulled? This was around the same time as Manic Street Preachers 'Motorcycle Emptiness', just prior to the big Seattle thing going big.

Thanks for posting this! Church of Logic Sin and Love defined the summer of my freshman year at Penn State. We played this song so many times at so many parties I can still do all the lyrics from memory 19 years later. I had the tape for years and loved every song..Blue Town should have been huge! If any of the band members read this, thank you for providing the theme music for a great time in my life.
My name is Dave, I'm the drummer for the Men....every once in a while I look at our video for old times sake, I saw your comment.....I'm so glad you liked the record Bro, we had a lot of fun touring this record it's too bad it didn't go anywhere after "Church"....I liked "Blue Town" too and "The King of Central Park" was super groovy....Anyway, nice to hear from an old fan!
I think it's official now, all the members of the band have commented on this video. I'm SO happy to have gone through the weird stuff I went through to find this, and share it.
The song (or a bit of it) came to me in a dream, years after I'd heard it. I blogged the dream. Two years later, someone commented on it, saying people were looking for it but couldn't find it. Well, I had to find it then, didn't I? It's a longer story than this, but ... anyway. Awesomeness.
@dbin3d Hey , my wife just asked me what song I would like to request for our Christmas party on Sat. I said I wanted to hear Church of logic sin and love ...... she asked " What ? " I said I loved the song and nobody played it . Hopefully I hear it on Sat . Thanks for the song . I love it . Bob Victoria BC ... Canada
I remember calling the radio station at least once a night to request this, was one of my favorites! Got in good with the DJ, so most of the time he obliged! So cool!
Saw these guys (& gals) in Nashville early 90's at 328 Performance Hall. Ended up backstage somehow and had a blast hangin' out with the band. They were really nice to a young band like us.
I really dig this song. I'd been wondering about this song for about 10 years, but did not know the name or who did it. I always looked up 'Church of magic sin and love' and couldn't find it. It was Church of LOGIC lol. So glad to have re-discovered it. Brings back fond memories of my early college days in Olympia, WA. Cheers!
Finally got a chance to listen to the entire CD...GREAT listen...a little bit of everything. I can see why oftaan likes this CD for road trips...very easy to listen to. Thank you again to The Men...sorry it took me so long to catch up to you!
18 years! That is how long it has taken me to track down this song! I heard it about a dozen times when I first got out of the Marines in 1992...I was working night security at the time...very thought provoking track. I just found a new copy of the CD on Amazon...CAN'T WAIT to hear the whole thing!
Thank you to The Men...I am sorry that a generation of weak minded followers brought the garbage from Seattle to the forefront of that period, the world truly missed out on something amazing...
Right on Angel! Only heard it a couple times and it never left me! I have no idea what the thing is, and the truth is I just don't care. Just straight-ahead rock nothing fancy no gimmicks, Rock and Roll Baby! And I also love the smell of eggs and coffee. Well done, Men!
If it wasn't for the internet, this song might have been lost forever, at least to me. Back in the day, this song worked its way into my consciousness, but I never knew the name. A decade after that, I had a dream with a "then they came upon the thing" theme. i blogged the dream, and years later, someone found the post thru google and told me the name & the band, and said ppl were looking for it but it was hard to find. So, I had to find it ... and share it. And ... well, here we are :)
@dotlizard I don't know why this song became so hard to find? I remember in the summer of 1992 while I was traveling the state of Florida looking for a job and also volunteering on campaigns (yes, Democrats) here -- this song would come on a great deal on the radio in my car whenever I would turn on the great Rock (pre-Classic Rock stations of later years) such as 95 YNF in Tampa and WHTQ in Orlando (pre-CR days)
I first heard this song when I played it at the college radio station where I worked. I always wondered what happened to this band. Finally found and bought the album years later - GREAT song, and I like the rest of their music too.
This is one of my favourite songs of all time and I am so glad to have been able to find it here on youtube. I have a copy of the single on cd, but the song received very little airplay in Australia when it was released, so this is the first time I've seen the video. I was obviously hooked on the song the first time I heard it.
I just bought this cd today, I vaguely remember the song in the early 90's but hearing it in the last week here on youtube made me remember just how good it was.
This is truly a one in a million song. I only heard it a couple of times in the 90s but it never left me and it never will. It's one of those songs that just takes you somewhere else. And in 1963 everything really was aquamarine.
I think of this song when I hear "Hey Jealousy "by the Gin Blossoms.I downloaded a 320k copy of this one yesterday and it's in my car stereo right now.Great song!!!!
I was a passenger in a big-rig driving through the Arizona dessert when I first heard this song come on the radio. That was a long time ago, this song still grabs me every time I hear it.
You don't know how long I've searched for this one song. I remember hearing it on a ride home one night right before I got married and trying like hell to find out who it was. I heard it maybe three other times in the early 90s. Great song from a band that apparently just fell off the planet.
There's probably only a handful of albums that really "stick" with a person and this one was huge for me. I think it even subconsciously influenced some of my own music. The whole album was great, not just this song. I'm sure I listened to it enough that my college roommates wanted to strangle me. Hahaha. Anyway, thanks to "the Men" for this album!
Aquamarine...Aquamarine...THE MEN ARE BLOODY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! With all the crap that came out in the 90s.....this album stands by itself! BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but The Men (and a few other bands out there) got screwed over. While they were shooting this video, the corporate idiots who controlled the music industry were too busy promoting this annoying band called "Nirvana" and all the wannabes who wanted to copy them.
Sadly...The Men, along with a few other bands that came out in the 90s, got washed away by the "Grunge" phenomenon...which really sucked....this band could have made it.
this was a great song, cant count the times played it when my dad let me take my friend out on the boat without him. jammed this song, ran that boat hard, good times, good times.
Jef, Nancy, The Men, thank you. I have to say that the first time I heard that song, I gravitated right toward it. You see, I was in a station wagon in one of those cross country vacations. When we came upon 'The Thing?'. I knew exactly what you were talking about. I bought the CD when I found it. You captured the essence of Americana with that song. This is the first time I saw the video, looks like you got Fremont before they threw the roof on. Anyway, thanks for this part of my life.
You can see by the comments how this song has stayed with people over all these years. I personally went on a long, odd internet quest to find it at one point, that started in a dream that i blogged, and years later someone found that dream blog looking for your song, which lots of people were looking for but couldn't find -- hence the quest. i put this together from a screen-captured video and the MP3. and it lives on ... you guys doing anything now?
well, over the past 2 years, over 11,000 people have seen this video. 80% are between the ages of 35-54. 63% find through search, the rest happen upon it while surfing around. in the past few *months*, the 35-54 demographic has increased sharply on social networking sites, and continues to grow. so maybe start by reaching out to this built in fan base -- do the internet thing maybe? - youtube, myspace, facebook, all that. and the cities will come from that :) i'll help, if that helps...
Seriously: If you are in contact with the band members PLEASE get them to put their album on itunes, they would deservedly make a lot of money from just this song alone, an I for one would dearly love to legally download this so I could pump this on my car stereo on long road trips.
Hey Dot...Hey Jef...it's Dave Botkin (Men drummer) this is so awesome that you posted this...it feels good that so many people are still digging this, we had fun back then! and Jef...look me up on facebook, I'll do the same, I miss ya Bro, and yea...if there were enough cities! :) Thanx again Dot!!!
@dbin3d I just added this to my playlist for your Dad, Dave. Wanna get in touch with you guys desperately. Your family is a DYNASTY in the recording industry !!! chuck in Phoenix
I don't comment much on You Tube...but just had to thank you for this AMAZING album....a true classic! Its a beautiful Friday morning up here in Toronto, Canada on this 10th of July....the sun is cascading through my windows, the sky is a piercing blue and there is a sweet breeze in the air...all the while Church of Logic, Sin & Love emanates making this a PERFECT DAY!
Man, (no pun, really) I just came across this thread today while making a mix for a road trip tomorrow. This CD has been in my collection since it came out, and I hold on to it tenaciously. Everytime I play it for someone they act like they just heard a new sound. "This is a freakshow baby anyhow" long ago became a catch-phrase with my best bud. Love the whole album and it's a perfect road trip soundtrack. Never out of style, just like 501's. Thank you for a great CD. All the best to you.
@Jefscott1 "Just living life" That's all we can do, when the soundtrack for my life is played, I believe it will be lead off with this song. Thank you for the music!
The song and video make no sense, but that's what I like about it. If you think about though, it does make sense. The song reminds me of a girl that I once loved. Just like the song, she got lost in time. I did find the song again. Love is harder to recapture.
Truly one of my favorites of the 90's. Such a good story in song. I hit the road on a cross country trip years ago and came across The Thing out on the interstate in the desert. Of course this song came to mind and it played endlessly in my mind. This song captures an innocence in growing up and self discovery on the open road. classic.
Thanks dotlizard...have been looking forever...met the band back in the day as we played this when I worked at 107.9 the end...Clevelands' Modern Rock....peace...
i am really glad so many of you guys enjoy this. it's just an amazing, amazing song, and video. definitely a piece of my personal history, in a big way.
About 16 years ago, my then girlfriend got a promotional sample CD from Spin Magazine. This song was on it along with a lot of other "unknowns". This such a great find on You Tube. All I have to do is wear a hat.
This song and video totally kicks ass!! I've been looking for the album in record stores for years, with no luck. And I've seen those billboards for THE THING several times when I used to drive back and forth between Phoenix and El Paso (many years ago). Someday I'll stop there and check it out.
I recorded the song on my tape player as a teenager and listen to it over and over and over and loved it....never know the artist or the name of the song. I just looked it up remembering some of the lyrics. I'm extatic!!!
Awesome song! I've been trying to find a copy for years without knowing the name of the song or the group. All I could remember was the line "I just had to smoke a cigarette and wear a hat" Finally heard it today, for the 1st time in years, on a radio station that post all the songs it plays. Looked it up and ordered it off amazon.
I wore my cassette copy of this album out back in the 90's. I remember my friends and I would be hanging out and someone would say, "Aquamarine" and we'd all start quoting the song. It was a weird, wild summer and this was a defining soundtrack for me. I tracked down a cd copy in 2001 and listen to it often. Thank You! My favorite line though is from "Where you found me" - "I drank so much coffee-that my stomach-made a fist punched me out" Epic songwriting and playing!
This song has stayed with me since my father played it when I was little. It was one of the few awesome things he ever did for me. The Men had such a awesome sound, truly amazing. But this particular song strikes a chord in me that no other ever has or will.
Thank GOD this video is here. And thank YOU for the masterpiece.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I saw The Men at the Masquerade in Atlanta when I was in high school - I had a great time that night despite being stood-up by the girl who was supposed to meet me there. Really takes me back to an amazing time in my life.
The song is awesome. Reminds me of when I migrated out to L.A. after college in '95. You can find several dozen copies of the album available on Amazon.
This is so fun - I really enjoy the comments - the good and the harsh. As I posted - I was the bass player - my sister Lore was the guitar player - David Bodkin was the drummer and Jef Scott was the genius songwriter singer. Our moment in the sun was so brief , but it touches me to read that we are still remembered. Jef really was such a storyteller. And I agree that the whole record was great. Yours too to own for 99cents on ebay! Check it out.
my dad loves this song. He likes it even more than Bruce Springsteen (and he likes the boss a lot). Its so sad you only had this song. Keep rocking out.
It seems like you guys were on the brink of stardom. Many bands put out a couple records before hitting the big time.....What caused you guys break up??
We broke up in the time honored way that all bands break up. Record company imploding - band member drama -and terrible timing. Seattle grunge - us out.
I remember hearing this song when it first came out a couple of times, but had no luck finding out who what when and where till now. It touched me on so many levels. For awhile I wondered if it even existed...then on a whim I typed in what I assumed was the chorus only to find it was the title. Thanks for posting this and letting me know it wasn't me being an idiot or thinking I was hallucinating. It stirred up some great memories and made me think. Thanks!
Hey Nancy,I saw you when you were on your 2-3 shows/day tour of Florida. You played in a sports bar in Ft Myers at about 11am. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Your album is the reason I still own a tape player. Thank you so much. Vince from Cape Coral
I love it, and back in 92' that's what I was trying to decide-- if I want money, sex, or all of that success- reminds me of being free with no responsibilities- man I miss those times!
I was the bass player in this band. Jef Scott - the singer songwriter is brilliant. There is a whole host of reasons the band didnt make it - but he was - and is -so talented. He should have been huge. But thats the music biz. Go figure.
there is such a story behind how hard it was for me to find this song, and how i found the video and dubbed in the sound and stuff. it was a quest. it started in a dream. i am just delighted that you commented and hope you don't mind the, um, sharing i've done :)
What is Jef Scoott doing these days? Also, if you don't mind telling, what do you feel was the biggest obstacles the band had breaking into the mainstream?
Jef is still playing in Los Angeles. The name of the band is the Ghostwriters. Biggest obstacle? How about - while we were taking the pictures for the cover of the record - the photographer was blasting new music from some band called Nirvana. We never had a chance. We were completely out of step with what was about to be a huge change in music. But a songwriter is a songwriter is a songwriter. Our timing just really sucked.
Have been playing this song over and over for the last hour. It's one of the few short stories been most perfectly told in the form of a song that I know about.
I thought I'd never get to watch this vid; thanx to whoever uploaded it.
I love this song. The line "and everything was aquamarine" is something I use from time to time when talking about a time in America when there was real hope. We were going to the moon and we knew we were going to go further. Just absolutely love this song.

Cheers!

This is one of my favourite songs of all time and I am so glad to have been able to find it here on youtube. I have a copy of the single on cd, but the song received very little airplay in Australia when it was released, so this is the first time I've seen the video. I was obviously hooked on the song the first time I heard it.

This is truly a one in a million song. I only heard it a couple of times in the 90s but it never left me and it never will. It's one of those songs that just takes you somewhere else. And in 1963 everything really was aquamarine.

Hahaha. Anyway, thanks to "the Men" for this album!

buzzer22222 2 years ago
I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but The Men (and a few other bands out there) got screwed over. While they were shooting this video, the corporate idiots who controlled the music industry were too busy promoting this annoying band called "Nirvana" and all the wannabes who wanted to copy them.
Sadly...The Men, along with a few other bands that came out in the 90s, got washed away by the "Grunge" phenomenon...which really sucked....this band could have made it.

I personally went on a long, odd internet quest to find it at one point, that started in a dream that i blogged, and years later someone found that dream blog looking for your song, which lots of people were looking for but couldn't find -- hence the quest. i put this together from a screen-captured video and the MP3. and it lives on ... you guys doing anything now?
dotlizard 2 years ago
Funny you ask...
If there were enough cities to justify a tour...we would.
As you can imagine, there is literally tons of new material.
Jefscott1 2 years ago
well, over the past 2 years, over 11,000 people have seen this video. - youtube, myspace, facebook, all that. and the cities will come from that :) i'll help, if that helps...
dotlizard 2 years ago
Seriously: If you are in contact with the band members PLEASE get them to put their album on itunes, they would deservedly make a lot of money from just this song alone, an I for one would dearly love to legally download this so I could pump this on my car stereo on long road trips.

Yours is an incredible song.
But I love the name of the group, The Men, with females playing bass and guitar. Now, that is a fantastic 60s trip.
Peace, my friend,

This is so fun - I really enjoy the comments - the good and the harsh. As I posted - I was the bass player - my sister Lore was the guitar player - David Bodkin was the drummer and Jef Scott was the genius songwriter singer. Our moment in the sun was so brief , but it touches me to read that we are still remembered. Jef really was such a storyteller. And I agree that the whole record was great. Yours too to own for 99cents on ebay! Check it out.

We broke up in the time honored way that all bands break up. Record company imploding - band member drama -and terrible timing. Seattle grunge - us out.

What is Jef Scoott doing these days? Also, if you don't mind telling, what do you feel was the biggest obstacles the band had breaking into the mainstream?
levij86 3 years ago
Jef is still playing in Los Angeles. The name of the band is the Ghostwriters. Biggest obstacle? How about - while we were taking the pictures for the cover of the record - the photographer was blasting new music from some band called Nirvana. We never had a chance. We were completely out of step with what was about to be a huge change in music. But a songwriter is a songwriter is a songwriter. Our timing just really sucked.
