Went to lasersteve's website listed on the vid end...was curious about the electrolyte, anode and cathode he used to do this reverse plate...I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. The anode looks like copper, but is he just direct plating gold onto the cathode? Was considering this for a means to remove plate for further refining, but a soft-metal cathode won't withstand an induction furnace.
It would be about 2 million times more profitable to just sell the jewelry at half price or something. If you want to strip something, strip old cell phones, or discarded microchips. Those are all gold plated.

How much reverse electroplating have you done. How much cell phone and microchip processing have you done? What is the cost of processing plated jewelry vs cell phones and microchips? What if I wanted to harvest this gold to make jewelry? Then what is it's worth?
I just started reverse electroplating, and I am curious to know if you know the proper setup using volts, watts and/or amps for various power sources. And if you increase the power, will it speed up the processing speed?

What are you using as your anode here? ive tried various basket designs using either stainless steel or copper mesh but im tryin to find somethign less contaminating, or maybe a little more efficiant. Just tryin to get some ideas. Also, by chance what amp are you running here? i use a 10 amp but i was told you can go up to but should not pass 50 amps. Any input?
@socorban The anode in this video is copper mesh. Copper is probably your best bet. Its the cheapest and easiest to optain. It also has the second highest conductivity after silver. Silver however will break down as the acid gets diluted. Making a solid gold fine mesh would be very challenging and expensive. Copper is actually quite resistant to concentrated H2SO4. Most of your contamination will come from the nickel and steel in the scrap. Making a totally resistant anode is fairly pointless.

@socorban Lose the term smelting. Its reserved for separating metals from ores. We are melting. I melt my metals with either a MAPP gas torch or oxy-acetylene rig. I melt them in crucibles of various sizes like seen in my videos. You need only use borax. Nitrates are a crude way to try and get slightly high purity by oxidizing base metals. Since you are only using acetylene it will not work anyway. The cell is only for recovery. In order to get high purity you will have to refine the yeild.
@Airsoftkid212 well electro plating machine is expensive and computer memory and shit is hard to fidn so by the 1 month it takes u to get like 50 dollars worth of gold i dont think its worth it
@Hyzing This is not an eletroplating machine. This is a reverse electroplating machine that can be made for $25-$100. The amount of gold you accumulate depends on how ambitious you are. 50 dollars worth of gold at this momemt is less than a gram of gold. About a half pound of gold fingers or several cpus. Not a big amount at all although you wouldn't use a cell to process that kind of scrap. If you go to the forum or the site at the end of this video you should research "AP process".

@Grundalizer The gold settles at the bottom of the cell as a black sludge. Nothing spectacular to see. Picture the gold powder in my melting video and then picture it being black and slimey.
@borostmcbarna I believe someone on the forum has a silver cell working. They get it to work using a different concentration of sulphuric acid. In doing so other things have to be accounted for from this type of cell. Go to the forum and search for silver reverse plating cell.

You can't tell. In fact, you should assume that contaminant metals are coming off with the gold. This happens in very small amounts however. Each item depending on the type of underlying base metal, how long the material stays in the cell and temperature will determine how much contaminant comes off of the scrap. An electrolytic cell is for gold recovery and not refining. You must understand the difference between the two when getting into refining precious metals.
@metalicmario I have a couple of scraps that are unmarked, and I'm not sure whether they're solid, filled or plated. I'm still waiting for my testing kit, though, but I assume this method will not work for sub-24k solid and filled? Are there any other way to refine sub-24k to pure powder form?
@sh7de Actually... The cell is made for plated scrap only. It can be used on gold filled but with limited efficiency. I've never been able to fully recover gold off of gold filled items using the cell. Gold filled items are made of a thin layer of karated gold mechanically bonded to a base metal. Much thicker than plated items. So I bet you can already guess that it won't work on karated ("solid") gold.
@elementcollector1 I'm not familiar with McLendon's. The sulphuric acid used in the video is Rooto professional drain opener and is about 93% pure. 70% will not work as lower concentrations will also attack copper.

@MrJohnnipper Basically you'll filter the sulphuric acid leaving behind the gold (black powder). The H2SO4 concnetration has to be lowered with water before filtration. This is a dangerous process and has to be handled with caution as concentrated H2SO4 is a very nasty acid. Worse than HCL and HNO3 in my opinion. Go to the website mentioned on my vid to see how to recover the gold. There is another way to do it but you should try it this way first to understand the why not just the how.
I use a standard 120V 2/10 amp battery charger. Its important that you use a manual charger as the automatic ones wont work. You can get one on the website at the end of the vid or pic one up most anywhere they battery chargers are sold. 2 amps deplates slower than 10 amps but 10 amps will heat up faster.
@imatelly The cathode is made of lead. I'm not 100% sure about what the anode is made of. Looks like some grade of steel(not stainless). Most anything will work for the anode as long as it conducts electricity well. The cathode however has to be highly impervious to sulphuric acid which is why lead is used.
