yup the 892.. she would get a good 2 mpg on a good day loaded. Most of the time we would dip in to the low 1's and when we would horse around we could get gallons to the mile.
you are correct sir. being two strokes the detroits need lots of air to run. GM implemented the supercharger, not as a power adder, but as means to make the engine run. the turbo was added later for increased power.
It is now really a "supercharger", because it is a 2-cycle and does not use the crankcase to pump intake air into the cylinders, as in a gasoline chainsaw engine. without a blower the engine would not run. The "super" charging comes from the turbos, without it or them, the engine would be considered "naturally aspirated". Unless the blower is "overdriven"
It's an 8V92 Detroit

@dieselweasel69 yep

@dieselweasel69 these engines are super turbo charged

@dieselweasel69 yea. detroits naturally need a supercharger to push out exhaust gasses beacuse they are 2 strokes. The turbo it for more torque :)

In the 70's it was unheard of for a road tractor to get over 4 mpg. Now it is common for them to get between 6 and 8 mpg.
heatherrose2006 2 years ago
huppypup you mean straight out of the turbo into the supercharger
