  • How much did this car auction for?

  • I like the color.

  • This car spooks me because I have one just like it. Take a look!

  • From when GM cars were built in Detroit.

  • hm need to get that car somehow and kill anyone who stops me

  • From a time when America was AMERICA!

Wake up, USA! Where's your pride, for Godsake!

  • I had a 57 Caddy

  • nice car!

  • GHOSTBUSTERS!!! Echto 1

  • @kaiserbill5711. While I agree that rate changes between various types of spring medium are indeed different, I disagree that one is superior. In most cases it is a matter of packaging. The number of springs required on a tank (idler and road wheels) is suited to torsion bars. Mechanical servicing makes torsion bars less desirable on road cars. Interestingly, Indy and F1 use coils activated by bellcranks.

  • @ KeiserBill

Torsion bars never became the engineer’s choice for most street cars -- or race cars. But air bags are still going strong for heavy duty road applications. I've designed springs for a number of automotive products so if you can educate me with actual engineering text references on the superior performance characteristics of torsion bars for automotive applications, that would be peachy.

  • @ KeiserBill "You know nothing" - Tip: That's not an effective way to start a post if you're trying to convince others that your comments have merit. The air suspension on the 1959 Eldorado was the most technologically advanced automotive suspension at the time. If you read, you'd have seen I never claimed it was perfect or reliable. As to suspension on tanks, other than that many people thinking all 50's US luxury cars were tanks, it is irrelevant.

  • i wonder if they murdered her with the tail fins

  • Idk, if you bought this car it would be a total trophy. You can't drive it much, that would increase the mileage...

  • How much did it sell for?

  • How exactly did they get all the blood out of the car? That seems that would be next to impossible to do.

  • if the engine is so great and so powerful, then why is it being shipped via truck? how do you know its not just crap?

  • @hep2jive You dont drive a car like that to an auction dip shit. You cant drive an uninsured vehicle of that value, if you wreck it your fucked.

  • @JackBuck44 ok ok geez! hahahaa calm down mate! just wanted to know. i think i had a good point?

  • @JackBuck44 also though if you like old cars check out my 47 pontiac, you might like!

  • I wouldn't want to own a car that someone was killed in. But then again, probably would lower the sale price.

  • i heard the ghost of the ownersits in that car and changes radio stTions

  • Damn. Why can't they make nice cars like this anymore?

  • @wheatpuff Because for what we'd have to pay for that kind of quality in today's dollars, we'd never be able to afford one! Consider that a new Toyota Yaris costs about three times what this Cadillac cost new! Shame!

  • i'd drive that

  • who do you have to kill to get a car like that

  • It's a shame it stays locked away unseen and never driven. I find it more impressive when people have old cars like this restored to like new condition and drive them around. These older cars like this were made to drive and the driving experience is way better than today's cars.

  • Nice video; Clean, Precise, Good voice over...

  • I had a 73 Coupe DeVille. Never should have let it go. What a " Land Yacht".

  • That's one beautiful car man! Amazing condition. Pretty sad reason as to why it's such a minter.

  • I hate to say it, but cars back then look even more futuristic than even today's cars.

  • I owned a 59 a few years back ,i could just NOT get passed the tailfins in the rearview mirror, it always looked as if there was a car there ..while changing lanes on the freeway it was a bit "offputting " i would constantly have to turn my head to make sure there was no one there ...i drive a 55 caddy now and i like it a bit better

  • I hope she has a good owner who didn't pimp her

  • "The Muscle Car" of 1959?

Man,I dig old Caddies and the '59 Cadillac may be the most famous 1959 automobile but a muscle car?

    Hmmm....

    Well,if you say so.

I heard that the original muscle car is often considered to be the Pontiac GTO(based on the '61 Tempest and debuted in 1964) conceptualized popularized by John Delorean early in his meteoric career.

Muscle cars came later than '59,at any rate.

    Beautiful Cadillac,tragic story.

    Thank you and...

    Peace,

    -g

  • I believe it sold for $170,000 at the Barrett Jackson auction.

  • @windwmx78 The Carhaul Yard I worked at, handled the FIRST Challenger to come off the line at Bramalea, Ontario. Jackson bought it for $425,000 . It had the engine cover ( the plastic thing on top of the engine, the correct name escapes me) signed by all the designers. Nothing special about the car, just that it was VIN number 1. We all took a gander under the hood.

  • Anyone know how much the car sold for?

  • No pun intended but I would kill to have tis car.

  • bigb, thanks for posting the sale price now I don't have to look it up

I was at BJ in Jan 2005 in Arizona and they were getting prices that high even then.

They booze you up with free liquor and the guys with disposable cash, keep bidding until the price is way higher than the car is worth.

I see guys now at auctions they can't get 1/2 what they paid at Barrett-Jackson, oh well . .

    .

Take away the free booze and they wouldn't have lost all that money. All about choices and consequences.

  • Still that car is preserved so flawlessly anyone would be proud to own it even if someone was murdered in it.

  • Childish refers to your statement that Cadillac is vastly, vastly inferior. My comments are fact-based. Yours reference advertising and now McCahill. He was an entertaining writer. Maybe you should see what Smokey said about him; Smokey being a person who actually saw through hype and dramatically advanced automotive engineering. After working on these cars and owning them, a person sees the beauty in each. If you ever own a nice 59 Imperial, I would truly enjoy a ride in it.

  • continued:

BTW, ever see a pic of a Caddy collapsed on its failed air suspension? Not uncommon. Ask any engineer familiar with era's trannys, and I'll bank almost all will choose the Torqueflite. Lastly, yes, I admit Exner designed some ugly cars (somehow your stated opinion wasn't "childish" though?), but his earlier iterations of fins really were quite beautiful, including the '50 Imp.

  • Childish?

Gratuitously insulting someone over an opinion might be just a little immature.

If you look at both cars with a styling eye, you can tell the difference between an integrated detail vs. a tacked on one. As for the Imperial's status vis a vis the Caddy that year, check Tom McCahill's comments or just watch the road tests. Caddy may have started the fins, Chrysler did them better imo.

  • Sorry Preposterous, your automotive knowledge apparently comes from Chrysler sales literature. The 59 Imperial was a very cool car, as was the 59 Lincoln, and the 59 Eldorado. Each had a wildly different look and style. Saying one is vastly, vastly inferior is childish and without factual basis. The Cadillac trans was a 4 speed automatic; the Chrysler was a 3 speed. Both were good but Rolls Royce chose the GM trans for their ultimate luxury cars. -continued-

  • @SpotRot Anyone who is so loyal to one brand as to trash all others is an idiot. All manufacturers made some bad cars, but those are generally few. Cadillac did, certainly, in the 80's with trash like the Cimarron and those hideous diesels and short lived HT4100 engines.

In the late 50's they were all pretty good cars, at least in the high price class.

  • Torsion bars act no differently than coil springs, their only advantage being a packaging issue (and marketing). The Eldorado had air suspension on all four wheels - the entire car (or the rear only) could be raised or lowered. Not so with the Imperial, which had an optional (basically) air shocks on the rear. The Cadillac system was far more technologically advanced. The simpler Chrysler option was likely more reliable because it was old school. -continued-

  • @SpotRot You know nothing - torsion bars act very differently than coils - why do you think all modern tanks ride on torsion bars - springs went out for tanks before WWII was over. I had a 1960 Fleetwood with the airbag suspension - it was a pain in the ass

  • I personally love the look of the earlier Imperials and letter cars, but for the most part Virgil Exner is known for arguably some of the ugliest cars ever put on the road. Perhaps you were not aware that Cadillac started the fin styling craze, and the other auto manufacturers copied, including Chrysler Corp and even Mercedes. -continued-

  • Sorry, guys...the '59 Caddy (whatever the urban legend claims) is vastly, vastly inferior to the '59 Imperial. Caddy was NOT the muscle car (Chrysler 300E and the Imp could beat it in acceleration and top speed). The Imperial's Torsion bar suspension made it handle better, its Torqueflite made it shift more smoothly, and its integrated fins were light years styling wise over the tacked on, garish fins of the Caddy.

  • if someone was killed in it *hopefully* no one else would buy it so i could. it's a work of art.

  • was somebody killed in it? if someone was i would never touch it

  • I think the owner's body was found in the trunk of the car. Not sure if he died in the trunk or not. The car sure looks nice in white. I would buy it in a heartbeat if the price was right.

  • So how much did it sell for?? Any body?

  • Comment removed

  • @cruiser87guy MAN!!! WHAT A DREAM,,, I WOULD LOVE TO OWN THAT CAR!!!

  • @000GoldBoy000

    $165 000.

    A bargain!

  • that's a beautiful car.

  • I am a sound tech, so it drives me crazy, sorry!

  • Dude work on your audio before you post! What are you doing in the background, crumpling up paper!?!?!?

  • who the hell cares you can still hear him fine...

  • 2200 miles...good god!

  • Dunno that I would take a car with that history even if I was given it. I certainly wouldnt buy it.

  • we had a car liek this also but than my dad was on the wrogn medicine and took it apart on accident...i miss it :(

  • that car is gorgeous.. that is my dream car

  • I wonder if the car stinks inside,,they say if someone dies or lays dead in a car for even an hour you can never get the smell out..

  • Yeah, but the body was left in the car up in New Hampshire on a cold winter night. The corpse was discovered the next morning by a couple of kids who thought the car looked out of place in the part of town they parked it. Plus it's been 50 years...

  • Does anyone know how much money was payed at the Barret auction for this car? I'm just curious.

  • $165,000

  • Thank you for replying.

  • Not an "Eldorado Seville" It's a 62 series Coupe. Back than, "Eldorado" was only a convertible model (ragtop).

  • Check your facts. It is in fact an Eldorado Seville which Cadillac offered for several years in the late 1950s.

  • Thank you. I stand corrected.

  • Check the carb and see it is an Eldorado with the gold breather 6 pack

  • which was standard equipment on eldorados.

  • best way to tell: a series 62 has much different side trim: the sweeping chrome spear along the fin isn't there, this is eldorado only.

  • scary

  • i would gladly get slaughtered in that car...its so beautiful and salemcripple...did ur bird freak out when the cage went flying???

  • You can bet she did. lol, But if you're implying that the bird might have caused it, She was only a small parakeet. In a very large cage.

  • Gorguos beauty to roll on, I love muscle cars.

  • Beautiful Car.

  • Insightful comment. The battery was original. However after years of discharge, the plates needed to be replaced. The exterior visible components (case and caps - which are visibly different from reproductions) are original. As a point of interest, battery desulfators are now being sold that claim to bring dead lead-acid batteries back to life. However, my experience with one on a long-dead repro battery was not successful.

  • I find it strange that the battery from 59' is still useable. Even if it was taken cared for extremely well...like disconnected while stored and any other "battery preserving" methods you could think of. It just seems like it would deteriorate from age alone.

  • Next owner is gonna get killed!

  • how much did u buy it for

  • Nice, all caddys are perfect

  • A little over 2 years ago,i traded a 75% restored 59 Coupe Deville For a 90% restored 60 Chrysler Imperial.Wish i still had the caddy

  • I wonder if it's haunted? As both a professional/recreational hot rodder, and a firm believer in the paranormal. I've seen it before. My friend (same as me) bought an 1940 ford coupe. We had determined that it had been in a rather serious accident at some point in the past, then restored. All of a sudden weird shit started happening all around the house. Doors would open then slam themselves shut (including the front door which was never left unlocked).

  • pt2...A mirror in the front hall broke for no apparent reason, stuff would go missing then be found in odd places. Strange shadows out of the corner of your eye. He understandably sold the car ASAP, then everything stopped. Just as suddenly as it started.

  • Oh Shit, I don't believe in ghosts, however, is that were the case, I would call my pastor and have him put Holy water in my yard, house and cars.

  • I've lived in a few haunted houses before, i've seen some strange shit before. I had a room clean itself in a matter of minuets (strange as it seems but it still happened). The bird cage went flying across the room once. Strange footsteps/voices. Houses like that are rather thrilling to put it lightly, lol.

  • Well as freaky as that is the cleaning room by itself part would be cool.

  • I was too young to comprehend what had happened. I was like four or five. And had a "toy" room off to the side of the main living room. The train tracks ran down the middle of our street. I left to go watch the train go by, and the room was totally trashed. after the train had passed i went back into the room, and all my toy cars were lined up around the outside of the room according to size. I thought my mom had cleaned it. It wasn't until later (when i got older)

  • pt2: that i had realized that that there is no way someone could have done that in only a 2 min time frame.

  • I guess Steven king doesn't have a original thought.

  • That is one of the most beautiful cars ever built.Definatly one of the nicest I have ever seen.

  • that shit is sexy

  • Thats a beautiful car!! Todays Caddys are a cheap joke with an inflated price tag!

  • Hey, a cadi is still a c cadi. Granted they're nothing like these classic cars, but there is still a difference between a cadi (or any other luxury car) and everything else. And you pay for that difference.

  • @Dreambro1 The 2011 CTS-V coupe is one hell of a car, I understand where your coming from and I love classics as much as the next guy, but...556hp 0-60 in 3.9 secs...stock, and I find the design to be appealing as well.

  • babei

  • It would be a shame to do that! Can't tear down all the houses where people were murdered.

  • Beatle,

You're right. Sort of. B-J ads a 10% commission so the buyer paid $165,000, even though the gavel was at $150,000. But still a bargain. There are no cars with this story or 50's Cadillacs this low mileage anywhere.

    John

  • I am close to tears...

  • That car is so amazing... I want that kind of car for myself...

  • I don't disagree that the 58 was a charm of charms, but this 59's have a pretty sleek scene too. I'm more into the Lincolns with the suicide doors myself, but hey who am I? haha, I drive a Camry! hahahahahaha. No offense.

  • '58 was a TRUE GEM? '59 was a DUD?

    What drugs are you on..?

Must be MIGHTY powerful stuff! LMAO

While I DO like the styling of all

    the GM offerings from 1958,

simply say "American Car of the 1950's"

    to pretty much ANYONE..

and you know damn well they're going to visualize a '57 Chevy OR a 1959 Cadillac -

    They are Automotive Icons. Period.

'59 Cads are gorgeous.. only enthusiasts like us remember the '58's lol

  • Absolutely beautiful '59 Caddy. The 1959 Cadillac's tailfins were indeed the tallest, followed by various Chrysler products (the '61 Imperial's fins were close)

  • You are right. I read somewhere and i'm sure it could be found...the 61 chrysler Imperial holds the record for the tallest fins. I may look it up and see how many inches....good day...

  • Pretty sad.. The car will never be "LOVED".. All it is, is a piece for it's owner to show off how much money he or she has.. It's a rolling peice of art and deserves to be loved and enjoyed..

  • An absolutely drop dead gorgeous car!!

  • 59 Buick fins taller? are you serious? They were blade like, maybe longer but not higher.I used to own one! This Caddy is so nice it hurts.

  • yes it is check the 59 electra's fins were 4 ins. taller than the 59 cadillac

  • the 1959 buick electra had fins that were 4 ins. taller then thr caddy

  • WRONG!

  • It went for 165,000$ large.

  • False. It sold for $150,000 through the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Arizona (Lot#1014).

  • i dont know why you would wanna sell such a car especially if there is only one

  • How much did it go for?

  • Great car, fantastic original shape (wonder how it would fare in judging?)

the narrator needs to work on his math a little-- 2007

    -1959

    ------- 48

  • '59 Buicks are beautiful cars and their fins are great too but searching the web shows many photos and they sure look a lot smaller than 59 Caddy fins. Super, can you supply any proof of your claim? FYI, I believe all 59 Buick models had the same fins, so the Electra model wouldn't be any higher. Another qualification is whether you mean the max height above ground of the tip of the fin or the max height of the fin from the body.

  • It is an unbelievable story, I was suspicious too. However, I researched it and found it to be true. The documentation is overwhelming and has been checked out by over a dozen major magazines and newspapers that have featured it. The website (or a web search)provides an easy way to verify the facts. Yet, Erik, it's obvious the word 'crap' comes more easily out of your mouth than effort.

  • Do you expect me to believe that crap?

  • i wish i had cash i would have at least 5 caddys

  • Those things were giant, a guy here restored a 59 Caddy Limousine, think ghostbusters ambulance, but add another few feet to the length...

  • that was one of the 59's that went thru barrett jackson this year... it is unbelievable gorgeous up close and personal (i live in phx just a few minutes from scottsdale and had the pleasure of going myself :))

  • awesome.

  • Doc Sab says.... AMAZING!! Wish it were in my collection.
