If your talking about Ported subwoofers then the idea is to make the bass deeper and the reason it sounds distored in the vid is because the camera cant pick up the bass.
the port is a resonater which needs time to oscillate properly (which means with maximum amplitude). Most ported designs are calculated to get as deep as possible what results in poor damping and therefore "boooom booom" sounds instead of tight, hard bass.

They do distort the sound heavily when the port is tuned to a low frequency and that is exactly how those mini subs are built.
Check the group delay of such a design and the impulse response and you will understand what I mean...
