After all the dust settles, we have only two choices. Either the universe brought itself into existence, or something outside the universe, an external cause brought it into existence. i propose this, eliminate all government granted benefits from marriage, this way marriage becomes a church thing only and gays cant demand to get married.
Take all the benefits you took from marriage and add them to the civil union, and allow anyone to enter a civil union with whomever they wish.
This way we keep the churches god given right to be bigots and racists, but also give homosexuals the opportunity to get married without the name.
It's so simple right. If only we could deport all the neocons and the republicunts and the repugnants and homophobes and stick bottoms and the vatican clergy and al queda and functionally inept to the south pole, it'd make a big difference. Just for starters

Marriage, as instituted by the government, is primarily about legal rights to property, children you have, etc. This is not quite the same as that instituted by religion, which can mean many different things depending on belief. Yet, the same word is used for both, which leads to the equivocation fallacies we see. I, too, have thought that the legal term should change. Of course, I suspect people would b*tch about that, too...
