Mexico briefly owned the southwest only briefly, about 20 years, and they "inherited" it from the Spanish who left in 1821. They lost a war to the US and in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo they sold it to the US for an extremely cheap price. Plus, the none of the Mexican Indians (Aztecs, Mayans) were native to the southwest USA.
