Look everyone, I made this video 2 years ago when I was 14 years old. I was not and am not a film historian or an authority on the matter, and I don't pretend to be. I just wrote what I understood from my studies of the silent film era. I apologize if this video or the description offended anyone, that certainly wasn't the intention.
@TheMagmagoblin it is such a pity the celluloid films caught fire would have loved to have seen the entire films. the censorship code came in with 1930's prior the silents had nudity and all sorts of dancing. enjoy what we do have. seeing new silent The Artist soon.
No, I don't by any means think Theda Bara was a 'goth'. I think she is the earliest example of gothic style (dress etc.) Though that may not have been what she was, there is no denying that the Goth culture have quite thoroughly mimicked this woman's style.
goth comes from gothic cathedral. she was about that vamp element and also egypt. and just prior to silent films were the Women of the Golden Dawn lodge. so yes it would be accurate and an honor to put her at the beginning of that trend, sorry the celluloid caught fire would have loved to see the whole movies.
@SirRiehl There is a difference between "Gothic" and "Goth". The word gothic orginally referred to an era and particular style of architecture. The term goth refers to the counter-culture. Since the Gothic era was prior to these films, the actress is not the earliest use of gothic style, though she may be the earliest use of goth style. :-)
@SirRiehl I am sorry that these people gave you such a hard time. The word vamp definitely came from the word vampire. I do not know why some people think that they are the voice of authority. Well, I guess that I am not the voice of authority either, but I do read. Your video is wonderful. I just made something about Theda Bara too.
vamp, is not short for vampire, it's a term to describe women who use sexual attraction to exploit men, a role theda bara frequently played in her silent films.
You are correct about the definition, though. Initially, women who used sexual attraction and mystery to exploit & seduce men were called "Vampires". The word "Vamp" was a slang for the word. I have proof of this, I have a Motion Picture magazine from 1923 that, on the cover, says "The Vampire and The Flapper". The article is about whom is more desirable on screen, the mysterious seductive "vampire" or the young, energetic, lively Flapper.
@SirRiehl hmm you must believe everything you read.. My other thought is she was a film star an the roles she played dictated her dress along with makeup as she did not dress this way in her every day life..The term Goths today is one of ppl dressing the part at all times so I totally disagree with your description of this lady thx for the upload tho
"Theda Bara- The First Example Of Gothic Style" but naturally, that title would be too long and wordy. So I just kinda shortened it out. And yes, seeing how the magazine is a REAL, PERIOD 1923 MOVIE MAGAZINE and they refer to them as "Vampires" I'm inclined to beleive it. Also in a 1919 Olive Thomas movie ad they list her as playing a "Baby Vampire" who is bored with her young beau and tries to seduce an older, wealthier man.
@SirRiehl After I read what you wrote about what a vamp is I looked it up on the computer and found Femme fatale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wow, you should check it out
Thank you for posting this...I know who Theda Bara is...but do not know a lot about her...and have not seen many phots of her...I enjoyed this...great job! :)

Great montage and music! Theda is iconic ... the 'goths' adopted her as their own; she had this wonderful air of mystery about her.

Ah, Theda Bara or "Arab Death", as you like it. Fancy myth around her, being a Desert Woman and all. Not really wheer you'd expect to find goths...
