man i remember the mclaren f1 gtr, porsche 911 gt1, and mercedes clk gtr

even when the mclaren was the baby on the block and the f40s were still around

that was the peak of modern sportscar racing. I had diecast models of all of them, i remember when i first got this "internet thing" finding le mans diecast cars and thinking this is pretty cool.

when they changed the rules i totally lost interest... the gap between prototypes (yawwnnn) and the lower gt classes is just too wide. Prototypes Zzz

One corner the Mclaren driver had to take an even tighter turn not to hit the Porsche...

Every time the Mclaren got out of the corners and started the acceleration it always took the Porsche. And when it came into hard corners, not the sweeping bends the Porsche had it. I do agree, Mclaren was pure power, Porsche was just best cornering. And sorry for interrupt your exchange of ideas. Just sharing my 2 cents.

Nope, not even close actually, late 90's GT1 cars were stupidly fast and a lot of them were basically prototypes and consistently outclassed the actual prototypes.

Also, the current GT1 class was GT2 back then.

I feel like the McLaren alone has somehow over-glorified this era. GT was kind of blooming but on the other hand it was a bit gloomy. The pinnacle of sportscar racing (Group C/World Sportscar Championship) had just recently died (1992-1993).

It was the OTHER WAY around.

Ferrari based the engine in the 1993 Ferrari 333SP from the 1992 Formula 1 car.

It was first raced in 1994.

Then in 1995 it ended up in a detuned and enlarged form in the F50.

The F50GT was presented in 1996 as a GT1 raceversion.

Ferrari focused their attention completely on F1 in the second half of the 90's.
