IT probably burns whatever is keeping the thing from cooling up (like dust) up. Once it burns off, it has a better thermal connection and can cool the chip again. Thats what It think. (if this does indeed work)

@swooshonln What it actually does is superheat the inside and re-melts all of the bad solder joints. RRODs are usually due to poor solder joints on the motherboard that heat up and go cold. This is not really advised, as it exceeds temps that are safe for the GPU and CPU. It does work, but it is only temporary as those solder joints will just go cold again. The only way is to pop it open and reflow all the solder joints manually.

Im no pro but Ive heard that what causes the red ring of death is a soldering problem with the hardware. Its kinda cool since maybe the heat generated by the xbox actually melts the solder and fixes the problem, but I dont think so since it takes a lot of heat to melt solder.

@PlatypusWrestler i've tried this method and WORKS. you'll need a Nyko Intercooler for this. 1. you heat it up as hot as you can (stated in your comment, yeah it does work like that) 2. once it seems to make less noise, and 2 rings are flashing this time, turn it off and turn it on again uncovered. it'll have a 70% chance, maybe 90% fix.

Ok listen the point of this is to seemingly reflow the solder but this doesn't work, look with this ur lucky to get ur 360 up to 100C yet the lead free solder on the 360 melts at around 217C. So all this will do is kill your 360; the more times you try this the less it works because this heats up everything on the 360 doing a ton of damage for what 4 more days of gaming its not worth it when it can be repaired

If you've got a 3-part red ring, then your problem is your power cords (somewhere...the wall, the brick, or the connection from the brick to box itself).

Why in the world would anyone think this is ok to do to a computer system or console? wrapping your xbox 360 in towels and making it overheat is begging to just have it break even more. would you ever wrap your PC up with towels? well i hope not. best fix out there to date to do yourself is the x-clamp removal and using machine screws to bolt the heatsinks on. you can also use a heatgun to heat up just the GPU heatsink and help seat the chips solder points back together.

it works as the problem causing it is a bad connection between the board and any one of the components. Putting a towel round the system and making it heat up causes solder to reheat, turning to liquid again and thus forming a new connection though you may find this is only a TEMPORARY fix.

Reason why this works. Generally when you get the 3 red rings is because its a hardware problem. 9 out of 10 times it's the GPU, the reason for this is because microsoft can't use lead in the solder because its considered a kids toy. The lack of lead makes it easier for the solder to break down which causes the GPU to separate from the motherboard. Heating up the xbox with the towels causes the solder to expand and make contact with the motherboard.

Leave it covered for longer. I left my Xbox covered for the recommended 15 minutes and was not successful. I then tried leaving it for about 40 minutes, and now it works.
