Buddha, in the current era in boxing money plays the primary role. In the past fighters really didn't have the negotiating power as they do today, ie. F. Mayweather, so it was more about legacy back then. I think atheletes learned a lot from the ones before them when it comes to making sure they are set financially before killing themselves to please the masses. But that's typical in all sports across the board today.

145 is a fair weight for both fighters. Miguel Cotto weighed in at 146 in his last fight against Clottey.
Many of the ATG's had a number of catchweights, like Sugar Ray Leonard.
Julio Cesar Chavez fought Meldrick Taylor for the welterweight title at 145. A number of memorable fights wouldn't have happen without catchweights. Even the Marquez Mayweather fight is at a catchweight. No one has taken heat regarding catchweights as much as the Pacman.

ok here is my argument defending catch weights - i dont think manny would have a problem fighting 147...provided people actually fight there. but nobody actually fights at 147, but rather we should call it, being 147 at the weigh in.
because of weight draining, i may weigh in at 147, and so could you, but then at the fight you could suddenly balloon to 165. with a catch weight, we may both be at 143, but then you may hydrate to only a manageable 150ish.

Cotto agreed to the disadvantage becuz of the money. With Mosley it's less about money and more about braggin rights. I'm sure money has a lot to do with it, but he really wants a fair fight between 2 of the best fighters today more than anything else. Cotto (who is younger and more able) is agreeing to go down to 145 for the money and becuz he really won't have a disadvantage. Mosley is too old and WILL have a disadvantage going down in weight.

actually he can fight at 147 the problem is his opponents after reaching 147 lbs at the weigh in will ballon to up to 154 lbs after they hydrate after the weigh in so it would be unfair to fight a welterweight when your a middleweight before the fight hence the catch up weight was invented :D so that after they hydrate they would still be close the weight they are fighting for :D hope all of you get it.

Nah i think Pac never reached 147 in the official scales. You might say the unofficial scales though (meaning after he rehydrates) but the main problem is BEFORE he rehydrates hes kinda chasing to gain weight. But you got a point on that a natural 147 on the official scales ballooning to 150lbs but not 154lbs. Thats OVERhydration if you ask me. Hes going be too plump on fight night and there be a possibility hell throw up if punched lol.

Oh..no argument there for sure. Of course he was drained..but no one knew 100% at the time of the fight, except for oscar & his team. People just saw that he hydrated 2 lbs and said wtf? Freddie said that he saw the i.v. marks when they came to the center of the ring and knew right away. If u watch the replay u see freddie stare directly at oscar's arm. Size-difference is the main issue being fought for by Pacquiao and his team. By no means should a smaller guy be criticized for fighting a bigger guy. The Golden-Pretty Boys were carped because their cases were the exact opposite or even worse, since they never compromised at a catchweight to compensate for the size advantage that they had over their smaller foes.

Ring Magazine is partially to blame. The pound for pound title is mythical, but because Pac is regarded as the p4p "champ", they say they make the fight at a catchweight for the p4p title. Its NON EXISTENT, there is no title. It is a panel of journalists opinion. I hate catch weights. I agree that there is enough weight divisions in boxing. Catch weights are like moving in the free throw line because you can't hit the shot. I did hear that Mosley said he would be willing to put up the belt no matter what the agreed weight is. Technically 141-147 is considered welterweight. So the belt can be put on the line according to the rules of boxing if the weight limit is set for 143-144. Mosley is willing to sell his soul for this fight bro. 60/40 split etc.
