What an idiotic statement "most important battle in the history of the world". There were thousands of battles far more important. I like to think the most important battle was the Battle of Tours that saved western civilization.
Most important batle in the history of the world? It wasn't even the most important battle on the western front, that easily goes to the Battle of Britain. I don't even think DDay ranks as the top 30 in all of World War 2. I mean, there were bigger battles fought in Africa. There were hundreds of battles with far more casualties and far bigger implications than DDay in WW2 alone. It did establish the Western Front, but it was inevitable and the Germans didn't have a prayer in stopping it.
I disagree. There were a couple of other events during WWII more important yet then the invasion of Normandy. Kursk and Stanligrad come to mind, and Pearl Harbour itself was of crucial importance.
@TanoBrati "and Pearl Harbour itself was of crucial importance"
True but probably not in the accepted notions that many have.
* Pearl Harbor was one of the greatest defeats Japan suffered in the War
* Welded a divided isolationist Nation into one unified ppl
* Excepting USS Arizona & Oklahoma all the ships sunk (useless in carrier wafare) were raised, modernised & took part in Battle of Surgeo Straights in 1944
* Important oil fuel storage depot missed completely
@auther1046 This is very true. I think Yamamoto himself said something like "Gentlemen, I fear that all we've achieved today is to wake up a sleeping giant and fill him with a deadly resolve."
And as you pointed out, the damage done to the fleet, while it seemed pretty bad, was mostly superficial. Only a bunch of old ships were sunk / damaged ... the carriers remained unharmed and - most importantly - the harbor facilities were barely scratched.
@antred11 "the harbor facilities were barely scratched"
Which made it possible to start the salvage of the sunk ships immediately. Modernise the entire area and prepare for a war on a scale that no one had seen before. If you've seen pic's later in the war of ships to the horizon my dad said it was very much like that except it was all around in scope. We clobbered them so bad the 'New Japanese Navy' started to build their ships with glass bottoms so they could see the 'Old Japanese Navy' :-)
Thank you for this great video...My daddy was in the 1st infantry and was with the first wave on Omaha Beach..He often wondered why some lived while others died..he said he lost good friends that day. When I saw saving private Ryan so many of the scenes reminded me of things my daddy had said through the years..I often saw heartache in his eyes when I would ask him to tell me stories of the war...He's been gone 5 years now..but he will always be a hero to me.
I think that in comparison to the Eastern front, where battles claimed hundreds of thousands of casualties, this becomes a modest battle. It is more memorable for its strategic importance than for the casualty rate.
^The most important battle in the history of the world^ ......of the world, no less huh?! It was one of the most important battles of WW2 and those men fought bravely but even so we could argue about its importance considering Stalingrad and Kursk.
If you were Russian you could be forgiven for thinking this was when the allies finally joined the fight. After Stalingrad, Germany wasn't going to win the war.
@titokawaru Very true. The Allied invasion in my opinion was not so much as to defeat Germany as it was to prevent Russia from dominating Europe after the war.
Thank you SO much for posting this video. As most people have been saying, I too am truely greatful for what these men fought for. God bless them, their families and everyone here who supports their cause. Thanks again for this video series.

In retrospect it isn't hard to see why American casualties were so high on Omaha Beach. There is a very competent analysis of this in Chester Wilmot's "Struggle for Europe" written in 1952.
I knew a fellow who landed in the 5th wave on Omaha. He was also in the Battle of the Bulge. Was wounded in the kidney. Walked around the Ardennes forest for two weeks before he got medical aid. A hardcore guy he was. Proud to have known him.
