  • dang! memories! yes.... warm 'n fuzzy! 6th grade! ooo mmm geee

  • "It's time to go to bed..."

  • I remember this news cast the day it was broadcast. The 49ers beat the Browns with a last second field goal that day! AWSOME!!!!! I loved KTVUs broadcasts!

Thank you soooo much for posting this!

  • God I miss those days. Life's different now. :(

  • Funny thing i noticed with this intro. I was looking back at the 89 quake and saw this vid on the side. If anybody wants to know what the Old Cyrpress structure Route was its on this intro map, just pause at 0:08, That stretch of freeway(light) to the lower right hand side that looks kind of like a big backwards "S" . Is modeled after the Cypress structure. If you look at Google Maps you will see how they rebuilt the route.

  • @paulthomas2010, that was George Watson, the very same amicable weekend anchor reporter shown at the end of THIS video. He was well-liked by many viewers, including me. Where-ever he is now, I sure hope he's doing well.

  • World class!!!!!

  • Wow I moved to SJ in 1996, and even in the late 90s they were still using almost this exact same theme, intro and the set (just a teeny bit updated). I think Leslie Griffith was there until just a couple years ago too.

  • WOW, I remember that 49ers game in Oct.90 vs. Cleveland: The Niners stole that one, there was a non-call on a face mask tackle on a Cleveland receiver that prevented a Cleveland touchdown.

  • i remember this opening and would watch it almost every night.. then fall asleep about half way into the news

  • This was just 2 days after I was born.

  • Who was it that said he had an alcohol problem? That was a sad moment. Very brave to say that live on air. Hope he made it.

  • It was George Watson.

  • KTVU could use this opening today and it would still be grabbing and modern.

  • That theme music is so soothing to me...

  • this aired 2 days after I was born.

  • Someone asked, "... why this post; why the followup..." For me it reminds me of my childhood. Just nostalgia..that's all.

    2. Was KTVU forced to remove "The number one prime time newscast in the country." ?

    3. Is it me or did T10oCN used to have a constant "typewriter" sound in the background the entire newscast ?

  • I would presume that they're no longer #1...

  • I remember that sequence. They did that until around 1997 or '98.

Until I think 2003 or so the Ten O'Clock News was still "The #1 Primetime Newscast in the Country."

  • Until 1997

  • This newscast aired 2 days after I was born.

  • Just curious... I remember NBC did a piece on George Watson in 1997, after he was canned by Channel 2 for his excessive imbibing of the "juice of the grape." What became of him since, please? Thanks.

  • He had another relapse after that story. But sometime in the early 2000s sobered up, won an emmy for a report he did back at KTVU in 2004 or 2005. Is remarried but not sure if he's working.

  • Glad to hear of his turnaround, and let's hope that this marriage serves him well.

  • I remembered when he came back after 2001-02ish... He mostly did special reports on Mornings on 2. I'm not sure where he is now.

  • man i wasn't even born yet but i'll say the open ROCKZ 1990 dam my mama was still n high school

  • I don't mean this to sound sarcastic -I am quite genuinely curious. Why has someone posted an opening from a local newscast from nearly twenty years ago, and why is it being discussed by people who seem to be, for lack of a better word "fans"? Again, I intend no derision, I'm just baffled.

  • Two reasons...

    1. People are nostalgic. Maybe you're not. But seeing something familiar from our past makes us feel warm and fuzzy. Even the opening from an old local newscast.

    2. KTVU was probably the best local news production in the country. Local news tends to be schlocky and awful. KTVU was an exception and garnered a lot of respect over the years. The reporters were good and well liked. People, myself included, are curious as to what happened to them.

  • I miss Ron Boltz doing the opens here from KTLA and KTVU. Its Incredible that KTVU is the only Fox Station to not go tabloidal like the Fox O&O's do. How does KTVU and Bay Area TV News manages to pull of a newscast without Tabloid Stores thats seen on HLN and Fox News?

  • I used to really like the end of the 10 O'clock news later on when they had what i think was a CGI overhead view of downtown San Francisco. I wish somebody had it on youtube.

  • Ahh, I rememberb back in the day when my non-cable TV in Sacramento could pick up most of the Bay Area channels.. Used to watch KTVU 2 News and KTVU 2 Cartoons a lot back then.

  • I remember those days. I used to watch Romper Room everyday on channel 2. Hey, do you or anyone else remember Elaine Corral? I was MADLY in love with her!!!

  • Can't say that I do, unfortunately.. I barely remember Dennis Richmond, course now I see he's retired..

  • I remember all that too...Romper Room, Elaine Corral, do you remember Faith Fancher?

  • I remember her very well; I watched a lot of the special broadcasts in 1994-95 during the OJ trial when The New Price Is Right & Family Feud were being pre-empted by the trial on CBS.

  • i remember this

  • I remember watching the Dateline piece whereas the anchor, George Watson was an alcoholic. As the management tried to help him, it wasn't enough for him to keep his job.

  • They said October 28th 1990, hmm that means i turned 10 years old on that day!

  • I REMEMBER WHEN CHARLIE VAN DYKE SAID LIVE FROM KTVU AND FIRST IN THE BAY AREA THIS IS THE 10 O CLOCK NEWS ON CHANNEL 2 THE # 1 Primetime Newscast in The Country

  • Wow, that was quite a news set.

  • It was their best news set

  • I thought KTLA's Ron Boltz did the open for KTVU until 2006

  • They did. He would come later. But from the 80's until the early-mid 90's they used Charlie Van Dyke (heard in this open).

  • no its Scott Chapin

  • Chapin only did promo's in 1997 until 1998 he did the morning news opens and KTLA's Ron Boltz did opens for the 10pm News until 2006

  • really? wow i could have sworn it was Chapin before on the news opens, btw he was already doing the opens in the pre hd era

  • I heard of Chapin in the morning newscasts but Boltz took the 10pm newscasts until 2006

  • Scott Chapin! I did not know that! I think that Scott was an announcer for WKYC-TV 3 in Cleveland between 1993 and 1996.
