The best chinese movie ever made. This movie was made in the year I was born , 1993. Nevertheless I've finally got a chance to see it yesterday. Couldn't stop thinking about it since then. Profound, tragic and beautiful movie.
@Mrsolowing0582 Agreed! This novel actually talks about the painful Chinese history in the last century where the tragedy is pushed to the peak during cultural revolution. The life of the main actor represented the lives of the mainland ppl. in this dark period, his passion for this precious traditional culture was crushed, all traditional culture is crushed, the root and humanity are all erased. Those ppl. still admire cultural revolution are monsters in this world!

The most heartbreaking movie ever made. I've never cried like this. Honestly I wept throughout the movie. The beginning with young boys being beaten, Dieyi being raped, the woman taking his love in front of him, the unrequited love, replacing him in the opera.. I just wanted him to find someone else to love and forget about Xiaolou. The guy kept ripping his heart time after time :( It was so painful to see him suffering so much. Such a pretty and innocent person he was.
This film got the The Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival. It received a lot of respect. It doesn't need to win Oscars to been seen as a great film.

This is defintively the best Chinese film ever.The storyline,directing, acting and cinematography...everything is just perfect! An epic masterpiece full of Chinese culture and history, full of power,emotion and depth.
This one of my ALL TIME favorite movies, Im not usually into soft touchy movies, but this movie is just soo good. Its an expose on chinese history, its deep emotional love story, and theres so much complexity to it, i love it!
Excellent movie. After watching it, I am sad for days. Tearing beautiful things right in front of you is brutal and tragic. Only those who know Chinese history can understand the vulnerability and suffering of these people.
@TheNuharoo pft, oscars dont mean anything, most of the films that win oscars these days are crap anyways... great movies are made, they may be not as popular, but its better to gain the deep respect from a few true dedicated fans, than to get mass shallow recognition from media exposure!

This film is so slow paced, but so poetic and beautiful. There's so much depth to it! Leslie Cheung's face is unforgettable.
