  • It's easy to add the Mac EFI to a PC Radeon 6870 installed in a Mac Pro, so that it behaves like a regular Mac video card. Just download the OSX program "Zeus" from "groths.org" and click on the "firmware" tab. This EFI is based on the iMac EFI, which uses a Radeon HD 6xxx chipset.

  • Hi can you tell me what the power cables are please ?

Will the power cable supplied with the card work ? or do I need to order separately ?

I will be replacing the HD2600 XT in my Mac pro 3.1 with the HD 6870 black edition.

    Thanks

  • NO! It's Mac OS 10! X is a roman numeral for 10! Get it right! Please, it's bugging me.

  • @aussienerds It's now just OS X - Apple dropped the "Mac" portion of their operating systems.

  • @daturnerman76 Lies! Lies and deceit! No, seriously - touché.

  • Just installed the XFX Radeon HD 6870 on my early 2008 Mac Pro (3.1) and works EXACTLY as the Youtube poster says. Mine isn't a "Black Edition" because I couldn't find one. However, the one I found on Newegg looks identical in every way to the one the video poster is installing. Just some quick thoughts: To use bootcamp with this card you need a free mac program QuickBoot. The card works fine in Windows 7 after you install the inclosed drivers. Card if fairly quiet for having 2 fans.

  • Should I buy a Mac Pro now? Or Should I wait, and if so, does anybody know how long for the next Mac Pro is coming out?

  • @MrOLhello

Apple is thinking about to stop producing mac pros...very bad

  • @hyrobous Well no one is actually sure, it's just speculation that Apple "might" be thinking of cutting of the Mac Pro.

  • @chargerfun34 Regardless, we'll still be getting about 8 years out of the 12 core Mac Pros. So, there's not much to fear right now.

  • @aussienerds I take that back, 6 years.

  • I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me. I'm shopping for one (or two) of these great cards, but I can't tell which one is which because there are so many variations. I've seen Sapphire, XFX, MSI, Gigabyte, HIS, Diamond, Tul, Visiontek, PowerColor, and others. What gives? Why are there so many names attached to the 6870? You can PM me if you want. Much appreciated!!

  • You can install this card under snow leopard as well, I found a driver located in the extension folder called ati6000controller, next to 5000, 4000, 3000, etc. Can anyone confirm this? I'll admit I'm not sure if that is even considered the driver.

  • What is the differences when it is the black edition?

  • @Simplefier Better cooling and a faster base core clock.

  • 5870 is faster than 6870?? also how much did ur mac pro cost? thanks

  • @abuabdillah333 Yes, 5870 is between 6870 and 6950.

  • @9ggubZprod Thanks, checked benchmark tests online, don't know why AMD does that with their naming schemes.

  • @9ggubZprod 5870 is a workstation class card, it has two GPUs and I believe up until january 2012 it was ati's fastest card on the market.

  • @oldVideoGamesChannel You got your facts pretty messed up there buddy. 5870 is a single gpu gamer card. The 5970 on the other hand, has two gpu's (two 5770 I believe), but is still a gamer class card.

  • @9ggubZprod The Mac version of the 5870 is a workstation graphics card with two GPUs.

  • @9ggubZprod It's two 5850's. A little bit more powerful.

  • @abuabdillah333 It sure is, my Mac Pro cost $1400.

    Thank you,

    chargerfun34

  • @chargerfun34 just curious. you've got an 8 core mac pro and it costed 1400?

For the love of got how, lol. i'm saving for one for rendering uses and stuff.

    thx

  • @samm1551995 Sure did, 2008 machines aren't to expensive now.

    Thank you,

    chargerfun34

  • GREAT job man!

  • nice videocart and all, but why a mac?!

  • @CallMeMasterBabo because it is mac!

  • @jossh87 lol, why would I be jealous of a guy who spends $3,000 for brand when I could literally build the same thing (or even better) for $1,500

Apple is well known for over charging for their computers (not to mention making it near impossible to upgrade them without dishing out another few thousand to Apple for a whole new computer)

just tell me your computer specs and I'll prove it to you

  • @DrDeso1 Even the first thing you said was wrong. I did not pay $3,000 for my machine or any where near $3000. And no, you couldn't build a computer for the price I paid for mine and have it match spec-to-spec. For one, I'm running dual Xeons that are server grade, my ram is ECC Fully-Buffered Server RAM. I have a cooling system that aftermarket would cost upwards of $300 (that's including fans and cpu cooler) also my case aftermarket would cost nearly $400. So no, you're wrong.

  • @chargerfun34 what did you spend on your computer then? And why would your case cost $400? It's not even a full tower. Also, I doubt that your stock fans and heatsink are worth $300

  • @jossh87 also, it has a shelf like interior so that your hard drives and other drives can be pushed in, lock place, and be easily slid out, as well as an SSD port on top, 4 USB ports, ports for water cooling your system, a vent on top for the cool air to rise out, removable filters in the front of the fans so you can clean them out, LED lights, AND has holes in the back of the casing for cable management and reduction of system clutter with wires

what does your apple case have?

  • @jossh87 so you judge beauty over functionality with computers? That's not how the tech world works

The DF-85 is 19.90" x 8.40" x 23.50" giving more than enough room for any amount of graphics cards, hard drives, etc., 5 120mm fans and 2 140mm fans for keeping the system cool, and is made of steel, so you'll worry more about breaking the floor than the hardware inside your case if it ever drops

Apple makes computers that look stylish, but they are just a turds painted yellow to look like gold

  • @jossh87 build quality? Do you even know what you're talking about at this point? If you only buy a computer based on the case, then I feel bad for you. If you want to see a PC case with plexiglass, huge quiet fans, and a steel casing, then look up the "DF-85". It's a full tower.

Macs get their hardware for the same companies everyone else does (intel, amd, etc) but mac just charges literally double for older stuff. tell me your specs, and I promise I can find/build a better PC for cheaper

  • @jossh87

Btw, I do own a $2000 macbook pro from 2009, so yeah, don't call me a hater.

  • @jossh87

Its more like a few thousand. A six core mac pro costs $3,699.00 whereas, I could build a six core hackintosh for $1,500 with better graphics, more ram, more upgradeability.

Don't get me wrong, but the mac pro is a fine piece of equipment. But it just isn't worth the money you pay for it.

  • @jossh87

Its not very hard to do that though...

  • what size is you're display?

  • @xXAPPLEGUYXx It's the 30" Cinema Display

  • @chargerfun34 Nice setup btw love the ikea furniture mine looks similar to yours but its the black brown color. And if you want another display the 23inch cinema displays are on ebay fo around 120.

  • will this card work with snow leopard or just lion?

  • Can you post a link of where to get these cables?

  • what cables where they exactly?

  • Amazing how all the little whiners are jealous of this guy's setup. I guess they are surfing from their mom's basement on her 1998 eMachine.

  • Thanks, that answers my questions.

  • I hate this OS war, I have a Windows PC and a MacBook Pro, I use the some of my games, but TF2 and Minecraft run flawlesly on Mac too. I love both, Mac is more user friendly and Windows better for most games.

  • Mac sucks!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • How has the card been? Could you do an updated video on how it has been?

  • THATS JUST SEX! LOL

    NICE VIDEO

  • good video thanks!

  • why a 6870 and not a 6950 or 6970? ,its a good card but if you have to use it not only for work but gaming you need to go much higher ,but depends of the resolution ,same if you chose an nvidia gtx ,i dont understand why spend more money for pc or mac madeit with che pricetg higher first for the name of the company and not for the perfomance ,after all have a best machine and bring a midrange/high videocard when you have the money for put on a better

  • @Daviderubber I would of got a 6970, but, the 6870 is the only graphics card that is fully compatible with Mac OSX without having to flash the ROM. Which I didn't really want to do. This card is plug-and-play which was really appealing. The 6870 is more than adequate for a lot of things. Now, in my Hackintosh. I will probably be putting in the new 7970 when Apple fully supports the new chipset.

  • If you mac takes that long to boot, maybe you should get a PC. and I have this PIII that boots way faster.

  • @ubuntupasztor Boot times = I could care less

  • @chargerfun34 Normally means you have a dying partition and it going to crash or you just have a very unorganized filesystem. just saying you know.

  • @ubuntupasztor The machine had just been formatted. So the filesystem may be unorganized. But RAID 0's have never been known to boot fast.

  • @chargerfun34 **may not

  • What are the fan noises like?

  • i know a easier way, sell the mac shit, buy a great windows pc for it AND still have money after it ;)

  • consider to buy a SSD... you'll get the desktop active in 10 secs!

  • @hyrobous SSD's are a waste of money

  • @UseryHee No waste of money!! just try!! i only use hdd for storage, apps in my mac pro are incredible fast. My machine boots in 5 secs! photoshop cs5 open in 2 secs

  • SKINNY BOY!

  • Why would you put the old card in? All it's going to do it take up power and generate heat that the new card will suck in...

  • Yes Apples products are expensive and you can build a computer faster for cheaper BUT...!! its the exclusive factor that they have if they dropped the prices on there products it will be exactly like what happened to blackberry and there phones..all fucking kids will be running around with them

  • upgrading video cards on a "pc" that can't run games is stupid by default.

Nice job on the video card, yes ur image looks better now rofl

  • @florin22xxl thats really weird i have the same computer and i play alot of games including bf3....

  • @florin22xxl You do realize that Macs can run Windows, right?

*goes back to playing The Old Republic on a MacBook Pro*

  • @florin22xxl Can't play games? Why can my dual socket 8 core behemoth of a machine play games. Please, enlighten me.

  • @chargerfun34 *can't

  • Sadly my needs drastically outpace the mac pro. I need to build a custom to run the things i want.

  • @gundambob646 How do your needs outpace a dual socket 8 core machine? I'm sure they don't. The only processecors that are truly faster than the ones in the Mac Pro are Intel's brand new Sandy Bridge-E's.

  • @chargerfun34 Yes dual processors are what i am talking about. (sarcasm) I need a black magic card, dual gpus, running either cross fire or SLI, quad core processor or greater. Needs to capture game footage, office server, need i go on? Internal size is limited on the mac pro. I know what servers are and am studying to be a linux administrator. I also need a raid configuration.

  • @gundambob646 Hmm, you are sadly mistaken. The Mac Pro can hold a Black Magic Card. It can run dual gpus (on windows) I have dual quad cores. The Mac Pro can have 12TB of storage internally with support for a gigabyte connection to SAS drives. I have a RAID config in my Mac Pro as we speak.

  • @chargerfun34 I never said the machine couldn't do that. Also if the application ISN'T written to take full usage of a quad or more there really isn't a point in getting a mac pro or anything of that specification. Unless of course you plan to run a server. Which the mac pro in my opinion isn't a server.

  • @gundambob646 You said the " I need to build a custom to run the things I want

" Implying that the Mac Pro could "not" do those things. So yeah, yeah did. Yeah, a lot of programs aren't. But a lot are also. If a program is based on x86 then it is most likely multi-cpu capable. If you think only a server needs something of specification then you must not know much about video editing or needing a 3d machine that can render quick without having to have a back end render farm.

  • @chargerfun34 **x64

  • I love the PC vs Mac argument and this is usually how I handle it. When building an engine, I like cars, you can use really cheap parts and get a running engine. When going for performance, high horsepower, in an engine you use balanced, name brand, well built parts in a block that has been machined to measurements.... I used to be a PC guy too, until I used my first Mac and came to the realization that the OSX Operating system is the wave of the future.

  • Very nice!! Gonna do the same thing to my mac pro 3,1 after xmas rolls around. Heard nothing but good things about this card. Is the slow startup just because of your hdd speed or did the 6870 affect that at all?

  • is this a 3.1 mac pro?

  • @TheAMDkid Its a 2008 Mac Pro, so yes it is :D

  • Nice.... thanks for sharing, I might get one of the pre flashed ones off Ebay for $200 so the boot screen works.

Have you had any problems with DVD or anything else since installing?

  • 6870 is a good card but why waste money on a mac pro when u could get a PC for a lot less ?

  • @girlsdrinkfeck *Waste* money? Where did I possibly *waste* my money. I got a fast computer, that is eloquently designed and very functional. I understand a PC does cost less, but it's a machine that should be running Windows. I don't use Windows, I use OSX. I could Hackintosh it, I have many hackintosh's and their a lot more pain than my Mac Pro. Good for a fast machine, bad for a reliable one. The Mac Pro is reliable and very fast.

  • @chargerfun34 all u had to say was u dont mind paying twice the price to use OSX , jesus christ

  • @chargerfun34

Well, if you hackintosh right, then they are quite reliable and stable.

  • @chargerfun34 PC's also run Zorin, Linux, Ubunto, etc.

all from UNIX, which is what OSx is from.

so yes, you wasted thousands of dollars on nothing

  • @chargerfun34 Awesome video. Don't worry about haters. They cannot appreciated the build quality of mac pro. I bought a used mac pro 1.1 for 549. I also got 16gb of ram($40) from ebay, ssd(transfer from a old pc) and lion. I really appreciate your video because i need a video card to finish my poor mans mac pro. Can i buy any 6870 or do i need this specific card. I am a broke student and cannot afford to pay apple tax on its parts. Thanks for your video.

  • @girlsdrinkfeck ARE YOU DUMB?!?!?! THAT COMPUTER BLOWS PC OUTA THE WATER!!! the osx operating system lets you select a portion of the hardrive to designate for downloading windows programs and that way if you download something with a virus then it will only affect that part of the hardrive and therefore increasing the life of your mac.

  • @rocs2hrd4u my PC can also run OSX ,infact any PC can to a extent ,and bootcamp dosnt run perfectly and infact has many bugs like all emulations do ,im just saying a mac is built same as a PC but apple charges more for bog standard OEM componants ,at least the video uploader actually bought his own shit for the upgrades and not from overpriced crapple

  • @girlsdrinkfeck Boot Camp is NOT an emulator, it IS Windows, Boot Camp is just the set up process within OSX that creates a no destructive (and removes it by running it again afterwards) partition for Windows to be installed on. Past that it IS a Windows computer. It IS NOT emulating it. It's NATIVE.

  • @TalesOfWar macs mobo uses EFI ,windows uses BIOS ,bootcamp puts in a emulated BIOS for windows ,so its an emulation for the boot ,i didnt say windows is emulated i said bootcamp is an emulation, same as a ANY other PC with the correct CPU type can run OSX using a EFI emulator

  • @girlsdrinkfeck Windows 7 uses EFI too, as did Vista (64bit editions). BIOS is only emulated to run POST, that's it, there's nothing emulated beyond that point, and it's entirely 100% native beyond that. BIOS only matters during boot.

  • @girlsdrinkfeck still has driver issuesd and bugs ,macs SUCK and are overpriced SHIT

  • @girlsdrinkfeck Haha if only that was true.. But it ain't

  • @chargerfun34 well as for ANY computers it differs person to person ,the best and most efficiant and stable laptops i owned were compaq and emachines at sub £300 mark, iseen macbooks kernal panick out of the box literally and i msure it happens with dells and acers etc too ,end of the day , .. meh

  • @girlsdrinkfeck Three letters; EFI.

Also worth noting is the Mac Pro is a workstation. If you want a PC with Xeons, it's gonna cost a ton either way.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome a tonne and still a LOT cheaper than a mac pro, u can order a prebuilt dual xeon tower for still £900 less than apples cheapest mac pro dual xeon

  • @LianellEsorrasilome and many modern motherboards have EFI anyway ,nothing new

  • @girlsdrinkfeck I wouldn't say *many* necessarily. I've seen a few uEFI ones, but i haven't seen any of them actually escape BIOS to see a difference yet, especially leaving behind the nasty POST times and Pre-GUI setup interface. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome as i said modern ,and msot give a choice of using EFI or BIOS ,u can disable BIOS post completly, my PC boots in 15 seconds from power button

  • @girlsdrinkfeck Is it possible to remove almost every trace of BIOS, and put it completely on UEFI? If so, i'm interested. And I regret going with a board that doesn't support UEFI.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome not sure ,something ud have to ask the retailer or look onto the manufactorers website specific specs, then making ya own little hackintosh is easy street

  • why did you put the first video card back in? You aren't using it correct?

  • Does HDMI work?

  • DO you know if the eyefinity 6 version of this card will work in the latest mac pro with 6 27 inch cinema displays ?

  • I have one of these in my Hackintosh, and it's an incredible card. I considered upgrading to a CrossFireX dual 6990 solution, but with the responsiveness of this one card and the ability to power my 5 cinema displays simultaneously, I don't see the light in doing so.

  • @JaredSPeters Do all you want, drop the motherboard, drop the graphics card touch your socks. It still works. I got an old pc, took it apart, did that, and still worked!

  • is the 6950 compatible with mac?

  • Hi, have a question: when the card is also a DVI adapter here?

    Thank you.

  • @TheBlackPhantom95 all cards come standard with a VGA - DVI adapter vice versa

  • @cako091 So is an adapter attached when I buy?

    Safe?

    Thanks :)

  • @TheBlackPhantom95 it just comes in a little bag where u just attach it to the VGA or DVI port

  • @cako091 Okay, thanks: )

  • looks like u never removed a gfx card.

  • @mrpolarbear1945 The ATI Radeon 2600XT is not a low-profile card. That's how all of those cards were built back then, if it was a low-profile it would be half the width that it is. Also, the 6870 is definitely not a low-profile card.

  • its a low profile version man which means it performs really bad

  • i'm not used to install hardware on macintosh products but didin't u need to uninstall the driver and such before replacing the old one ?

  • @To33eW There is no driver installation in Mac OS X. It's all build in the OS. ;)

  • in a mac the fuck

  • Me: Hey I play Bf3 On Ultra! What are ur settings?

    You:Low I have Mac

    Me: Lmfao GTFO wtf OMG

  • @v0ldemort1 Lol. Looks like you must not know much about this machine...

  • @v0ldemort1

PC User: Hey, I'm playing BF3 on ultra, what you doing?

Mac User: Making money with my computer.

Yep, equally as retarded and ignorant.

  • I had to subscribe just for this video. Mac Pros are just incredible!

  • do you have to install "hackintosh" drivers to make it run? thx

  • @MeinWindowsTutorials They say this works out of the box. I'm buying a 6850 for the similar reason.

  • How is gaming in Bootcamp with this card?

  • dammit , i got a XFX Radeon 6850 ......

  • Pero k torpe leches

  • @chargerfun34 MSI R6870 Hawk works on Mac Pro 8-core 4.1?

  • @steefykage I'm going to say probably, but I'm not 100%

  • Will this Card also work on Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard?

  • @Spencer40385 I want to know the answer to this as well.

WHERE DID U GET YOUR POWER CABLES?

  • You broke the first rule of owning a mac, you touched it.

  • OS X = OS Ten. The X is a roman numeral. Coll video :)

  • You won't get the boot screen without flashing the card, you'll only see the display once OS X has loaded the driver. What kind of performance are you getting with this? I'm thinking of upgrading myself.

  • @thejtechreviews I have done the same. And used a EFI rom. (Not need to flash) by netkas and works great.

  • @jackieboy8 Still, it goes without saying that you need to put a ROM on the card in order to get the EFI screens before Mac OS X loads the display kext (driver)

  • @JaredSPeters There's always gotta be the people that talk crap! For one, no electricity has been into the card and my hands have already been electrically discharged. And yes, there's nothing about it because the Mac Pro needs special power cables to make it work. Most computer's power supplies have the connections needed for almost every graphics card out of the box. So no need to even go over it.

  • @chargerfun34 Will this work in the 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 ??

  • @john4short I've heard it does work, but I cannot confirm on it.

  • @john4short Yes, it is confirmed to work on a Mac Pro 1,1 by netkas.

  • Do you know if the XFX 5670 will work??

  • Thats pretty sick, Ive been waiting to upgrade my mac pro gpu..do you know which other cards Lion supports?

  • Yeah using this card menas no DVD player and no Steam. It will work in 10.6.8 but you have to install updated ati drivers. look on netkas.org.

  • @GingerBillVideos As long as you are on 10.6.8 snow leopard or osx Lion it should work.

  • @marselsipod Niiiice. Have you personally confirmed this? "Should Work" is a little sketchy... I don't want to upgrade to Lion.

  • Where do u get the mini pcie power connectors from? Also I'm getting a 6870x2. It's a dual gpu single card. It requires two 8 pin connectors. Could I just connect two 6 pin to the logic board and add two 6 pin to 8 pin connectors to the ones that are connected already to the logic board? Thx

  • @warx23 I got them from OWC.com. And yeah, that's perfectly feasible. Just like taking the two cords I have and splitting them to have 4 PCI Express 6-pin connections. The Power Supply can handle it, so yeah, those cords would work fine. You just couldn't do two of those 6870x2 cards.

  • Hello, Thanks for the install video. You mentioned using this card in Crossfire mode in the MacPro at a later stage. Is this even possible given the PCI buses and PSU?

Additionally, I want to use the card mainly for gaming and I have quite a few Steam Games. If no bootscreen how does one select Win or MacOS at startup (Usually holding down the Opt key)? And no DVD replay? Why is that? Finally does this card work with Steam, I've read mixed reports. Perhaps you could kindly provide some answers.

  • @Kolibri1934 I'm going to send you a personal message. I ran out of room in here.

  • @GingerBillVideos No it does not have EFI64 and it will not load the card

  • Im not a fan of macs, but there is no denying their amasing build quality.

  • Miracle Blades ftw

  • Have you noticed any other issues with the installation? I have noticed comments on various threads regarding issues with DVD playback, etc...

Also, looking forward to a walkthrough of the Dell Hackintosh.

    Thanks!

  • @kaufeenx Nope, not at all! Other than the no boot screen and what not. But that is it. And yes, I can confirm that DVD playback is a no go. But oh well. I never use it anyways.

And sweet, should be up this weekend! (:

    Thank you!

  • Where did you purchase the two power cords to attach to the video card?

  • @kaufeenx Owc (other world computing)

  • ati 5870 is better and cheaper

  • @intelinsideTV It's not cheaper..

  • Can u send me a link to your desk

  • @phonesgo watch?v=zYSMbJHkROs Just copy that link after youtube.com/
