This is not about mathmetics, its about getting food when the parrot awnsers right, its a automasation of animal behaviour, like a counting horse, every time it's owner asks him something like, 3+3 the owner (not noticing) frowns or holds his head one bit higher, and the horse starts 'handshaking' till he does it 6 times, then the owner lowers his head a little (unnoticed) and the horse gets a treat..

this can be tested by removing the owner out of sight of the animal and see if it still does
