I love this movie. One thing though, it feels about as 1940s as Inglorious Basterds does. It definitely feels like a product of the 1970s, when it was made
Isn't that Tim Matheson, with the cigarette hanging out his mouth at 0:47? If so, that was the only appearance of him in the movie. I find that kind of odd because he had been around in TV and movies for awhile at the time and was a little more deserving than a cameo role. Of course, later he became Eric Stratton and "was damn glad to meet you!"
Because of oddball and the way he talked, it struck me as a Vietnam movie. Just set in WW2. Plus Shermans were tin cans on wheels. They had no real edge, except speed. Which I believe would not have mattered much in an urban enviroment.
@wuIfsheImut Well a Sherman would be much more use in small streets than a massive tiger, and a Sherman can kill a tiger close up especially from the rear so yes the movie is right.
@0ddba1l Actually they did, but many years later--2000's "Space Cowboys" also starring Tommy Lee Jones and James Garner. But if you mean you wish they'd worked together again when they were both still in their young(ish) prime, me too. :)
"this tank has been modified by our mechanical genius here moriarity" "whatever you say babe". they are completely laid back honestly they sont even wanna stand up
@trigga1uk No but because you couldn't literally make fun of the Vietnam war in the 1960's when it was on and fighting you had to put it during WWII or Korea not the current war because it would be offensive to soldiers their families and the anti war group's, it's kind of silly now but thats how it was back then.
@trigga1uk Nope. The closest things would have been beat nicks in the 50s, which were the precursors to the hippies. The people who started the beatnick BS started the hippie BS.
the tanks used in the movie were definitely E4 Shermans (original m4a3 with up-armored 76mm gun) borrowed from the Yugoslavian Reserve Army which still used them until the late 70's.
71 Pound gun... yea right, its a 17 pounder AT gun mounted on an M4 Sherman the only changes were slight mods to the turret so i can accommodate the higher caliber round and massive size of the gun its self.
this is pretty typical of american movies made in the late 60s early 70s as they may have been set in a different period but they reflected the times they were made in.. Oddball is a good example.. also like in the Movie Mash set in Korea but was definitely reflective of the early 70s even with the hair cuts etc.. This is a great fun movie..
If you think about it .... the culture & attitudes portrayed by Oddball & his crew are so out of place in a movie set in the 1940s. Who cares though? They're hilarious!!!!
They're not carrying the 17 pdr gun, The 17pdr was about the same as the German 88 which would be ~twice the length of the gun shown here. Plus the Americans were reluctant to adapt the 17 pdr gun anyway. There was a heavier Sherman called the Jumbo though.....
These M4 look weird. They have a long barrel, so i can assume it is a 76mm M1 or M1A1 gun, without muzzle brake. But it is not the T23 turret used to fit the US 76mm gun. These tanks are looking much more like British Sherman "Firefly" with 17 pdr. gun, but they are lacking the counter-weight at the rear of the turret and the muzzle brake on the gun.... I think these M4 never existed, it's a strange mix done for the movie.
If you watched the movie you would know they added the extra length onto the gun as a visual effect to make the Germans think the gun is more powerful
Here I am watching a classic movie scene, and you come barking all your technical stuff that, I'm afraid to say, no one cares about. Learn about history, don't learn what cm the gun was in history...
This is so funny, original even. In the middle of a war. The way Sutherland and Eastwood play off against each other in such a surreal scenario is so good!
Relax fellas - it's from the soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin and the track was called Sherman Holday Inn. The composer was trying for an eastern-euro gypsy feel with this track.
I LOVE THE BACKROUND MUSIC name of music playing Sherman holiday inn btw anyone knows where to get that music??? please answer quickly thank you

Fireflies are M4s in BRITISH service added a 7lbs gun and the turret is modified in the back.
I'm not sure if these are even M4A3s with 76, shouldn't they have the bigger T20 turret like it is on the M4A1 (76)?
Not sure...

No, those are M4A3's with 76'2 guns.. But oddball mentions in the movie that he's added extra barrel to make the guns looks bigger.
