there was only one Van Gogh, one Da Vinci, one Mozart and one Mr. Brian Wilson.... thats what makes him truly special, humans like that are born once in a lifetime
This is one of the Pet Sounds' songs I was most curious about--I always wondered if this song was an example of Brian having a 'split personality' among other issues. It almost sounds like the "good, sensitive' Brian is having a fight here with the "evil, tough Brian"! (as he is doing two completely different vocal styles here in this "mock" duet)
probably the best arranged song in the album, every time i hear pet sounds it infuriates me that this was the one and only genius album by brian wilson!! if he could of kept his sanity and had the backing of his band to move forward from surfing music, then bands like the bealtes and the rolling stones would of faced serious competition!
@RazrHack yeah i have, but its the wrong time, wrong decade! he will never be remembered for it! pet sounds ultimately is what he will be remembered for,
@999duhast The beatles did face serious competition Brian's problem he was alone against Paul John and the true beatles genius Sir George Martin. Paul and John had no idea how to arrange and produce their compositions. The Rolling Stones ???? sorry they broke NO new musical ground.
@IainB1511 that is what i stated, brian was not able to keep his head straight enough and yes he did not have the backing of his band... Rolling Stones may not have broke a musical barrier, but they knew how to write and perform rock n roll songs dude, that you can't deny! they have been rocking since the 60's and still continue to rock! hmmm who will be remembered more?? rolling stones or beach boys? without a doubt the rolling stones...due to the fact they have 1 good album
@Uzzie101 no band could of had washed up more than the beach boys, even though i am a fan, the lead singer lost his mind!! they made one good album! the stone's you can say have a few albums that they will be remembered for plus been the longest rock n roll band around! so im afraid you cant compare the two and that's a fact, however if brian wilson kept his sanity then yes i believe they could have made more memorable albums.
@ORALORALSEX Interestingly, if the Beatles didn't make Rubber Soul, the Beach Boys wouldn't made Pet Sounds. Kind of unique how each band influenced one another.
I guess Rubber Soul comes off 1965 and this must be a '66 tune. Anyway the Beatles couldn't do Brian's stuff and viceversa. The Beatles are the best band ever, Brian Wilson is the greatest genius who ever walked on earth.
@hippy4life4 thats debatable because brian wilson was so into music he would have done it anyway his father was a songwriter and his mother taught piano
@ORALORALSEX Yes, that may be very true, though it is also true that If Rubber Soul hadn't been made, there would be no Pet Sounds. The Beatles and The Beach Boys were constantly trying to one up each other.
@BorkBorkBork19 you are right, tht the beatles made better albums overall than the beach boys, but dont forget that the beatles wanted to create new music and move on from "i want to hold your hand" to more sophisticated albums, where as the beach boys, it was just brian wilson who wanted to move forward, he did not have the backing of his band, plus he did lose his sanity.... i often wonder what if....
@myndirnotur. Yeah, beautiful and timeless. Inspired the Beatles to produce Sgt Pepper, they were completely blown away by it. P McCartney reckons God Only Knows is the greatest song of all time. Brian Wilson is a genius and this album is testament to that.
The early BB's were great, as were the early rolling stones, the who is over rated, the beatles were great.....the kinks are awesome and one of the most underrated groups ever.....latter day BB's not so great....but in total the Beach Boys are awesome.l
@schaap9495 Because the industry would never allow this to happen. They want you to listen to Ke$ha because it is a way to brainwash you. Call me crazy but it's the truth. @schaap9495 That's why The Beatles had the impact they had and John Lennon made 1 million people go to DC to sing "Give Peace A Chance" and end the Vietnam War. If they do it again nowadays, they will never be able to kill the people of the other side of the globe and will never have the power to keep themselves fat and rich. So, just enjoy the music because those who try to repeat that nowadays get killed or fired from the profession. Sorry for the long talk but that's what happens IMHO.

@fadeaway2112 That's fine, truth-teller, you can laugh about it. @fadeaway2112 The thought process isn't extensive when it comes from people who make the lies that society swallows. You could be trolling me, but if you are you're pretty good at it.
The reason I don't support conspiracy theories is because they are poorly thought out. I must be supremely blinded if they are truth, because they're so poorly thought through it's laughable.
Let me tell you something for a fact. You got one hell of a bargain, that's the best $3.00 anybody could spend, especially if it's the CD with both mono & stereo versions with Hang On To Your Ego, the song that became I Know There's An Answer sandwiched In between that was released in 1997.
man, imagine if Wilson kept writing and releasing music immediately after this record. it wouldn't just be Lennon/McCartney at the top of writing polls - this is just crazily amazing for the time
Thats a great point, he was cut short just as he was touching unknown boundries, just think, he was 24 when he was doing this stuff, most songwriters reach their peak somewhere around 30 - early thirties, most people just focus on smile but imagine what brian would have put after smile was released, id love to have seen what he would have done after psychedelia, what would of been his 'abbey road', i'll bet it would have been monumental.
He did!! But it was not Capitol Records/Mike Love Certified... so SMiLE was scrapped and a hacked up shadow of the aforementioned was rushed out, sounding mostly like demos.
Brian was so crushed by the whole thing that he then and there stopped leading the Beach Boys. He still wrote but a tiny fraction of the amount he used to. Sad, really...
Many critics, more learned than myself, have written about this Lp, therefore I would merely like to add that Brian Wilson certainly accomplished what he wanted (which was to create an American masterwork i response to the Beatles' Rubber Soul). I'm not sure the world realises how much we need sensitive souls like Wilson on this planet--without them we'd certainly be a much more sorrowful bunch.
MrWallygator2 very true, this album is a masterpiece. To me it seems as though Brian was writing about a world that he wished would exist, while feeling sad that certain things happen in his existing world that he regretted. This Album is breath taking.
I picked up 'Pet Sounds' the other day for $3, and wasn't really expecting anything more than pop surfer songs. I'd heard 'God Only Knows' before, and that hinted at something more. Boy, was I won over. 'Pet Sounds' is an utter delight. I was listening, I was smiling, and I was loving it. This song is especially lovely.
I always imagined the Beach Boys as only surfer pop songs. My mom actually bought me one of their albums when I was a kid and I laughed it off as her not knowing good music. Then, I did some research. Hey, mom, the good ol' surfin USA Beach Boys are taking acid, smoking dope, and writing deep shit.
My dear when you have a bleeding heart and a beating passion to share Nothing shuts you down. It is a constant struggle this thing called Freedom and sometimes pain needs a:
I always loved this song, especially the break where the string section (mixed dry with no reverb) comes in. Typical BWilson. He was not happy with simply laying a vocal over a groove. His melodies, harmonic structures, sense of movements and melody remains unshakable for me. I recorded this song on my own first Cd, "Diamonds On The Beach". I invite you to listen if you like.
This song is Pure Magic as well... but it is also a really touching statement.... these songs seem to be Brian trying to help other young people not have to go through some of the same old teenage heartbreaks all over again... in some ways Pet Sounds is a teenage symphony to god in its own...
...Following suit- My favorite parts are the way Brian delivers those final two lines of each verse, the ones right before he goes into "... I'm waiting for the day when you can love again"
Something about the way he flows into that "chorus" is just mesmerizing, very Pet Sounds-esque. Oh, Wait...
its really not a question of pet sounds vs pepper, its much more prudent to compare pet sounds and revolver, and theres obviously no comparison in terms of harmonization, instrumentation, recording quality, and originality. this still just sounds like a early 60s pop record, has none of the zeitgeist change present in the beatles records
u shitting me? there IS really no comparison. Both are equally great albums but pet Sounds was a milestone for 60's rock records, Brian Wilson's magnum Opus. I like both albums but for me Pet sounds>Revolver
and the shit i just took in the toilet was my magnum opus. just because wilson worked really hard on the album doesn't make it intrinsically good. it sounds like an early 60s pop record, as i said, with none of the revolutionary recording techniques present in revolver. no comparison indeed.
firstly please list the records of the early sixties similar to this. Secondly this record was more innovative in arrangements & unconventional when it comes to instrumentation, moreso then anything the beatles did Prior to Sgt. Peppers. Give it up man, even McCartney and Martin acknowledges just how awesome this album is. Show some class tooclassy4most
This record sounds like it was influenced by Phil Spector. I would have to disagree there was no guideline to what the Beatles did on "Tomorrow Never Knows", and "I'm Only Sleeping" in rock and roll. They bascially used the studio for psychedelic effects. They were creating psychedelic music sounds from loops, sound samples, recording fast and slowing down the tape, and backward tape. I give Pet Sounds it's respect for it's influence but Rubber Soul and Revolver was bigger influence on Pepper.
it's hard to say how a band can be influenced by itself. i kinda see it, but huh? Pet Sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul. Martin has said there wouldn't be a sgt. pepper without pet sounds. the beatles wanted to equal it. and i don't think you can find a bigger fan of pet sounds than paul mccartney
Revolver is an incredible album. I would put Pet Sounds ahead of Rubber Soul though. The Beatles really stepped it up in the late 60's though. Pushing aside their pop songs to more psychedelic and rock songs. The Beach Boys didn't really do that though. They did get more creative in their style though as Pet Sounds proves.
well, beach boys were a pop band. This is a pop record. but you can't say the boys didn't push to other things. One listen to tapes from the SMiLE era shows Wilson was going somewhere nobody else was. and his 2004 release was STILL different than anything out there. and there's nothing wrong with pop. Wilson was pushing pop further than anybody before and after him.
yeah the beatles are the beatles with their evolution, amazing. but hey, because "psychedelic" is such a subjective description of music I thought I'd go out of my way and contradict you. Pet sounds is psychedelic! only a state of mind, relax and float up stream.
You didn't see my followup. I said it had minor psychedelia. The Beatles took it a little further out and Pink Floyd was pure psychedelia. Syd Barrett lived an acid trip pretty much. lol
But I think thats because Brian despite being on a lot of psychadelics of that time was still focused on the art of composing. I think the era of Beach Boys records from 66-72 is probably the greatest era of any band. Look I like the Beatles and Floyd. But I just think Brian was making some of the most beautiful music ever created during that time. And he made everybody else around him better. Sunflower is a great group effort. Christ, Dennis managed to become a very talented songwriter.
i do think this is the #1 album, but there's no such thing as an overrated beatles album, while the beach boys have pet sounds, the beatles have abbey road, let it be, rubber soul, revoler, sgt. pepper, and white album, although pet sounds beats them all, the beatles got more back up, but THEY'RE BOTH AWESOME!!!
Airsoftdude, go and fuck yourself. I love the beatles and i really like the beach boys, ever heard of variety? fuckface? Everyone has their own opinion, different mind different perspective different tastes. They're both awesome, get over it
thumbs up if u think da beach boys r good!!!

Oh, Wait...

its really not a question of pet sounds vs pepper, its much more prudent to compare pet sounds and revolver, and theres obviously no comparison in terms of harmonization, instrumentation, recording quality, and originality. this still just sounds like a early 60s pop record, has none of the zeitgeist change present in the beatles records
tooclassy4most 3 years ago 4
u shitting me? there IS really no comparison. Both are equally great albums but pet Sounds was a milestone for 60's rock records, Brian Wilson's magnum Opus. I like both albums but for me Pet sounds>Revolver

and the shit i just took in the toilet was my magnum opus. just because wilson worked really hard on the album doesn't make it intrinsically good. it sounds like an early 60s pop record, as i said, with none of the revolutionary recording techniques present in revolver. no comparison indeed.
tooclassy4most 2 years ago
firstly please list the records of the early sixties similar to this.

Matildamothers 2 years ago
it's hard to say how a band can be influenced by itself. i kinda see it, but huh? Pet Sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul. Martin has said there wouldn't be a sgt. pepper without pet sounds. the beatles wanted to equal it. and i don't think you can find a bigger fan of pet sounds than paul mccartney
caats19 2 years ago
Revolver is an incredible album. I would put Pet Sounds ahead of Rubber Soul though. The Beatles really stepped it up in the late 60's though. Pushing aside their pop songs to more psychedelic and rock songs. The Beach Boys didn't really do that though. They did get more creative in their style though as Pet Sounds proves.
mavsfan1000 2 years ago
well, beach boys were a pop band. This is a pop record. but you can't say the boys didn't push to other things. One listen to tapes from the SMiLE era shows Wilson was going somewhere nobody else was. and his 2004 release was STILL different than anything out there. and there's nothing wrong with pop. Wilson was pushing pop further than anybody before and after him.
caats19 2 years ago
yeah the beatles are the beatles with their evolution, amazing. but hey, because "psychedelic" is such a subjective description of music I thought I'd go out of my way and contradict you. Pet sounds is psychedelic! only a state of mind, relax and float up stream.
AjoyFulnoise9 2 years ago
I think there are degrees of psychedelia. Beach Boys and Beatles go into it slightly. Pink Floyd is much more psychedelic.

They didn't???? Have you ever listened to Wild Honey, Smiley Smile, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Love You, or any of the Smile Sessions??????
Mozzer232 2 years ago
You didn't see my followup. I said it had minor psychedelia. The Beatles took it a little further out and Pink Floyd was pure psychedelia. Syd Barrett lived an acid trip pretty much. lol
mavsfan1000 2 years ago
But I think thats because Brian despite being on a lot of psychadelics of that time was still focused on the art of composing. I think the era of Beach Boys records from 66-72 is probably the greatest era of any band. Look I like the Beatles and Floyd. But I just think Brian was making some of the most beautiful music ever created during that time. And he made everybody else around him better. Sunflower is a great group effort. Christ, Dennis managed to become a very talented songwriter.

i do think this is the #1 album, but there's no such thing as an overrated beatles album, while the beach boys have pet sounds, the beatles have abbey road, let it be, rubber soul, revoler, sgt. pepper, and white album, although pet sounds beats them all, the beatles got more back up, but THEY'RE BOTH AWESOME!!!

point of the story is...they were both great albums...and i hope rock n roll can return to those golden years.
