our equine studys class reckons your work is great the way your feelings are set [were jealous] but you work hard good job! and i admire the no stirups!
I can see how that method would work. Nicely done. My friend had a horse that reared on her a few times, but the problem was that she would go up and then go over backwards. My friend wasn't sure what to do exactly can't exactly ride that out... what would you have done? (don't worry, she won't get hurt trying to copy you, they don't have the horse anymore. I was just wondering)
I have a gelding that would rear. The people I got him from would let him get away with it. So I got on him and just let him rear. He did for about 10 min then he stopped and just stopped. Then he was fine. I rode him again the next day and he didn't even rear once. I have tried so many training methods to stop him. but yours worked. Thank you SOOOOO much.
So I let the track trainer know she might act out with him, and how I countered it--and she decided to break him in the next morning. Forwarned, he just told her NO!, too. He said she stopped and just looked at him. Thanks! And I know I've only told you ten thousand times how awesome you are, but that is the most spectacular vid, with him rearing and launching on you. You are, without doubt the best rider in the world.
This commentary made a few lights go off in my brain--specifically "shooting the town up" (for fun) And my filly is renoun for being naughty. So I decided to try something new with her antics. She is poo-protective, and when I went to clean the paddock, she decided to approach me and rear with her ears back. I didnt react to her, but said "NO!" sternly. Mid rear, she just dropped back to the ground and blinked at me in disappointment. (part 1)
Endo, saw your videos for the first time today, Very cool ! Nice to see a different approach to working out a bad problem ( rearing 5 yr. old stud) Kudos to you, and I will watch for more from you. S.
hey endo, I had a couple questions, what would you do with a horse that spooks all the time at the same thing no matter which rider gets on him? would you ride through it or use the tap? or would you do something else?
You couldnt have picked better words for this colt if you tried. That's exactly what he was saying in disappointment ("you suck") You always show such great insight into horses minds--and it gives us the chance to compare and analyze the problems that go on in our own paddocks. Thanks. Keep 'em coming!
perfect endo ( as usual :) lol :) really though, let the horse do the work and convince himself that it's not worth the effort expended. you could be mad , or tired, or worried, or anything... but none of that matters as long as you consistantly stay "on topic" calmly until you get what you want (in this case...just like in the water case...and in most cases...just a horse WALKING FORWARD :) beautiful :)
real horseman you are! love your work.. like i always have! keep it up, and someday i will become a good, jockey/trainer my self i hope.. if i could train like that... well.. here in norway i would then be rich!! haha!! ;) can't wait for the next vid. :D Norway :)
I love it...My question?? Kinda the same as "joescolors"...Knowing from the start he was probably going to rear, could you have tapped him before riding him and possibly gotten a different ride from the start? OR do you ride him first, have him act the fool, hop off, tap him, hopefully resulting in a better attitude and ride??
The surface and timing is the deciding factor Jen. When standing on gravel or a hard surface, the ball is in the horse's court and this horse doesn't do anything till he's outside. You also want him to understand why he's being brought down a peg. He wouldn't understand he was getting Tapped for something he was about to do had I done it before I rode. In this case I needed to address the problem in his head not his body.
with all due respect to your methods, no horse I was training would ever has a chance to rear like that one. I would've doubled that bugger b4 both front feet got airborne. That is just me however, cuz I am good looking & don't want to damage this package.
Hi Joe, in the track with the woodchip surface ? I wouldn't of gotten off. This horse has no respect for the rider and didn't want to be controlled by one so the riding TAP was the better choice only there are other horses bottling up behind wanting to use the track so I didn't have time to stand there and wait. The riding TAP take twice as long because you can't shift weight from the ground and once those legs spread your in it for the long haul.
Perfecto. Let him burn out his fire with a calm rider. Another great example of safe, effective horsemanship that builds trust. End result? An obedient horse with a balanced brain. And you have the priviledge of an enjoyable realtionship.
What is the piece on the reins that is a triangle shape?
Appreciate your anaology of "shooting up the town only to find out no one is in town". That rings true with a westerner like me. We deal with so many bucky, ill trained horses.
He is wearing a running martingale which is standard gear for racing. The triangle piece is called a "Bib" and it stops the young horse from getting the normal two strands the rings are attached too from getting caught in their mouth when the reach down and bite or play with the rings. The "Bib" is basically a piece of leather between the two strands that takes up the slack and keep them in place out of harms way.
Hope you have a wonderful visit to the states this spring. Hope you have a great response to your clinic and terrific students ready to learn. The TAP method you teach, your skills and your common sense approach are applaudable.
My filly just started rearing. Can you fix it for me ?

So, why didn't you just turn him in circles to stop him rearing?
(ok, that was a JOKE, people! hehe)
theKillDeaGame 3 years ago
What if the problem wasn't rearing, but say...crow hopping or bucking?
Then what would you do?
Maishley 3 years ago
Bite it on the butt before it snowballs into something bigger. One reins stop and held for a bit should take the fun out of it for them.
