Great video as always Jeri. You don't have any videos of some of these races ? That would be neat to see this in action once you get this thing set to go.
Now which almond joy bar recommended stick over mig? You're not using schedule 40! And yes your Valentine's day tube notcher and it's 304 heart shaped case is still on the shop list of things to do, besides a heavy work load I have been upgrading to carbon fiber which is way cool. Jeri are you allowed to strengthen the crappy factory subframe welds or modify the A arm mounts?
@SuperFullset Well that was an entertaining thought however as you can see Jeri is welding great with the MIG process, good penetration & uniform beads and the ability to access the weld joints in tight locations. It looks to me that Jeri is winning.
Wow that 's really great. Of course the Mach 5 has an all titanium monocoque body with titanium suspension. But you have to have that to support the forces produced by the 5000 hp engine. My son Speed will be driving it in the race. He always wins Ha Ha. See you on race day!!!
You are going to have to put a camera in it (or at least a camcorder) and make a YT video of the race for us.
Do you use any special tank, e.g. foan filled or something, that won't leak or explode? Can you put one on top that will eject clear of the car if an "exciting event "is approaching? Is there any kind of on-board extingquisher sytem?
What I don't understand is, why do you start with a real car anyway? It seems like it gets torn down completely… wouldn't it be easier to just build a frame from scratch?
@funkycoder1 Go to sunset speedway park com and go to the rules for the street stock under the rules drop down menu on the left hand side of the main page and all will be revealed.
Thanks for the update, Jeri! Interesting, the different designations for East coast and West coast classes. I'm not sure we have a comparable class in our region here to the Street Stock that you're referencing. Seems like your P/S would be our S/S.
@khisanth75 Not much can be done with CAD, since we have to work within the dimensions of the Camaro body and chassis locations. The rules call out certain dimensions we must meet and everything else is free form.
i'm a bit confused, in this video you're talking about having the front flex for an oval track and in one of the previous videos you said the suspension is supposed to do the flexing and the frame should be stiff.
did you change your mind or does it have something to do with tris' decision to go for the street stock class?
@4833504F Are you referring in this video to when she was talking about removing the front sway bar to make the front "float" better? If so, that IS a suspension part rather than part of the frame.
@4833504F I didn't intend to make this sound like I wanted flex. The chassis should be rigid between all suspension points. I was talking about suspension movement when I mentioned loading and unloading of wheels.
Wow! Your interests are awesome just like you! It's nice to know there are girls out there that aren't afraid to get their hands dirty or have a "hissy-fit" if they break a nail.I really like your vids, even if there are times that they pretty much go over my head....lol Thank You Jeri for just being YOU...
That is ausom, beats my Electron laptop but that's in a different league. I would not have a clue where to start on cars. Have you added any crumple zones for safety?
I have suggested Jeri that she combine her unusual background in car building with her electronics and get into electric cars.
ideally something like an all fiberglass tub chassis so it's super light (although a tube chassis can be quite good as well) and then light components and powerful electronics. maybe drag racing and really humiliate those primitive gassers. kill em with science :)
a good way to source a powerful electric motor for cheap is from scrapped forklifts. world records to be had
@jeriellsworth I'm using a cheap Harbor Freight notcher, but I'm having a few issues... Do you have any tips for figuring out the geometry of the cut, and/or how to keep the hole saw round? I burned up two hole saws today... i think the weld on it snagged and torqued it out of round...
I don't know anything about the physics of this sort of thing. Doesn't making a car this rigid mean the driver takes the full force of an accident? Obviously, a lot of thought of a lot of smart people evolved this design. I'm more wondering what I'm missing. There seems to be no crumple zones to absorb energy.
Are the speeds low enough that the only real concern is preventing intrusions in to the drivers space?
@frac There is a crumple zone not in the car yet, but you need to protect the suspension points or the car will never drive correctly after the first crash. I'd be willing to bet most injuries happen from the driver not having belts tight enough, so they fly forward until the belts stop the suddenly.
It sure seems like it would be easier to build a frame from your design, then add the body panels when you're finished. I imagine you've thought the same thing once or twice. Rules... pfft.
@SuperFullset Water pipe? For what? Are you talking about the roll cage? Water pipe would snap like dry spaghetti in a crash! Jeri was a professional race car builder so don't insult her. She's probably using seamless drawn over mandrill roll bar tubing ( D.O.M.). The rules call for a minimum 1-3/4 tubing with a wall thickness of .090 or more. Now if you were not talking about the roll cage I apologize for my misunderstanding your post.
Generally there are a set of rules to enforce safety as well as some kind of affordability. The closest you'd probably get to true "sky's the limit" rules would be F1 racing and their tens to hundreds of millions of dollars per team per season. And even there there are still a ton of rules.
You go from writing verilog to welding racing frames. What are you still doing on this planet. Build a rocket and be the first to explore Mars, woman.
Jeri's words carry weight that would break a less interesting woman's jaw. Her legend precedes her like lightning precedes thunder. Her knowledge is expanding faster than the universe. She is the most interesting woman in the world. She doesn't always drink beer, but when she does, she drinks something more bold than Dos Equis.
Cool project nice..good luck with that. Its looking really good.
