Back in the 70's when the LTTE was formed, the Cold War was going on between the USA and Russia. India was pro-Russia and SL was pro-USA at the time. So Indira Gandhi's RAW (no doubt inspired by the CIA) decided to support the 40-odd militant Tamil groups in SL, especially the LTTE.

In May 1987, we launched Operation Vadamarachchi (look this up on Wikipedia) and cornered the LTTE in Jaffna. The army was about to move in for the final blow in June when Rajov Gandhi launched Operation Poomalai and airdropped supplies to the besieged LTTE.

The IPKF was then deployed in the north. They behaved quite badly, brutalizing the Tamil civilians and raping the women. This made the Tamils support the LTTE even more and Prabhakaran ordered his cadres to attack the IPKF.

The LTTE inflicted enough Indian casualties to make the Indian public sick of the involvement in Sri Lanka and Rajiv Gandhi was kicked out of power in the next Indian elections, and your new govt withdrew the IPKF in 1990.
Mind you, we don't view Premadasa as a saint either, though his policies helped the poor people a lot. When the LTTE killed him, some Sinhalese celebrated with fireworks!

Hey friend. Pakistani and Ukrainian pilots flew alongside Sri Lankan pilots in the 1990's. I'm quite sure they didn't do it in Eelam War 4. By that time, our pilots had been trained well enough (mostly by Pakistan and Ukraine) to carry out all missions themselves :)

We had the LTTE surrounded in Jaffna in 1987 and were about to move in and finish them off, but then India threatened us to not crush the LTTE, so we had to stop the offensive. India screwed us up.

You do realise that IPKF was in the same position when it had LTTE surrounded. I am not sure how much of IPKF operations is talked about in Sri Lanka. Anyway at that time Sri Lankan govt. had requested IPKF to leave because it was feared that it was causing too much "collateral damage". either way now that LTTE is defeated there is one less thing for the world to worry about. I dont see what point sri lankans see in adopting a hostile anti-Indian attitude now.
The IPKF never had the LTTE surrounded. After some initial defeats against the IPKF, the LTTE retreated into the Vanni jungles and began a guerrilla campaign. The Sinhalese hated the idea of Indian troops in the country and the then president Premadasa armed the tigers and they inflicted enough Indian casualties to get your govt to pull troops out of the country.
Indian troops retreated when it was realised that there was no gain to be madet. India was not harmed by LTTE ops, it was Sri Lanka which was affected by it. IPKF intervention was to aid Sri Lanka and there was nothing else for us to gain other than goodwill. Its a basic fact, you must not be swayed by the spin your government of the day put on it. look at what India stood to gain from sending its troops in harms way for what was essentially your conflict.
India was not harmed directly, except for the people killed when Rajiv Gandhi was bombed. But trust me, we did not invite your troops to Sri Lanka. The president at that time, JR Jayawardene, was a racist if I dare say so and things would have probably turned really bad for Tamils if India hadn't intervened when the LTTE were about to be wiped out in 1987. But they had no right to violate our sovereignty like that. Rajiv even threatened military action against us if we didn't let the IPKF in.
To be perfectly honest, we don't regard the Indian military with much regard. The IPKF failed against the LTTE even before they had a proper navy, much artillery and an air force. We smashed them when they were at their peak. Add to that the fact that 10 young jihadis held Mumbai, a city of 19 million, hostage for almost 4 days and you can understand our attitude towards the Indian military.
I can't argue with someone who is admiring a terrorist act against unarmed civilians. You have had your own fair share of civilian casualties from LTTE activities. You have lost more than the 190 innocent civilians who died at Mumbai. would that make your army weak?
Our soldiers were bitterly disappointed when they were ordered to abort the successful Operation Vadamarachchi. Some of them even wanted to fight the IPKF but their superiors advised them against it for obvious reasons. Most Sri Lankans view Rajiv's bombing as something he deserved because he ended up dragging out our war for another 21 years.
I don't admire what happened in Mumbai. I'm just pointing out the glaring inadequacies of your security forces, which I don't need to remind you of.
And of course it was a bad move for our president to arm the LTTE. Premadasa was the prez who did that, against the advice of all his aides but the IPKF was too brutal and unpopular to be tolerated further. In the end, we lit celebratory fireworks when Premadasa was bombed too!

The whole city hostage ?? They killed unarmed civilians and used civilian human shields. The NSG could have ended it earlier but they were concerned about further civilians dying in the crossfire.

We were never openly hostile to the IPKF. Our military wasn't as large or battle-hardened back then and they didn't have a deathwish to attack the Indian army head on. Sinhala opinion was against the IPKF and the military also hated India for saving the LTTE. That's why Premadasa gave Prabha arms to attack you with.
It was a terrorist attack against a specific target, not an invasion across an entire front. The very next day people were reporting for work in nearby buildings ! That's the kind of spirit you will find in Mumbai.
Once the NSG were engaged they made sure that no one else got injured and despite calls "to end it soon" did a thorough and professional job to limit further damage to the heritage structure of the hotel itself.
As for saving the LTTE, if we were saving them why did they attack us. If we had truly supported them, the IPKF would still have been stationed in Jaffna in collusion with the LTTE like some other "liberators" and "peace-keepers" have done around the world.
They attacked you for the reasons I underlined above. It was like a proxy war the SL govt waged against the IPKF using the LTTE. The LTTE also didn't like the IPKF establishing their presence over their so-called Eelam.
The 26/11 attacks were primarily a terrorist shoot and run incident which later evolved into a hostage situation.Indians were following the news carefully, obviously.... and WHY do you say that the IPKF was forced on Sri Lanka..? It was basically gunboat diplomacy, no matter how nicely both Indians and Sri Lankans try to gloss over it.

@User19285 Rajiv Gandhi was killed because relations between India and the LTTE deteriorated in the wake of the IPKF invasion. The LTTE ended up fighting the IPKF with weapons given to them by our then president Premadasa cos even he hated Indian soldiers being in SL. It was the IPKF's failed mission in SL that gave the LTTE practice in guerrilla warfare, hardened them for future battles with us and gave Prabakaran a god-like image among Tamils. In short, the IPKF was a disaster from the start.
a cesefire to let them re-organize...rather the IPKF went up against the LTTE the hard way when they refused to disarm....they fought your war (and Rajiv Gandhi hadn't even been assasinated then...he was assasinated because he had ordered action against the LTTE rather than the action on LTTE being because he was assasinated !)...and when the momentum was building the force was widrawn..

Back in the 70's when the LTTE was formed, the Cold War was going on between the USA and Russia. India was pro-Russia and SL was pro-USA at the time. So Indira Gandhi's RAW (no doubt inspired by the CIA) decided to support the 40-odd militant Tamil groups in SL, especially the LTTE.

The IPKF was then deployed in the north. They behaved quite badly, brutalizing the Tamil civilians and raping the women. This made the Tamils support the LTTE even more and Prabhakaran ordered his cadres to attack the IPKF.

The LTTE inflicted enough Indian casualties to make the Indian public sick of the involvement in Sri Lanka and Rajiv Gandhi was kicked out of power in the next Indian elections, and your new govt withdrew the IPKF in 1990.
Mind you, we don't view Premadasa as a saint either, though his policies helped the poor people a lot. When the LTTE killed him, some Sinhalese celebrated with fireworks!

Hey friend. Pakistani and Ukrainian pilots flew alongside Sri Lankan pilots in the 1990's. I'm quite sure they didn't do it in Eelam War 4. By that time, our pilots had been trained well enough (mostly by Pakistan and Ukraine) to carry out all missions themselves :)

You do realise that IPKF was in the same position when it had LTTE surrounded. I am not sure how much of IPKF operations is talked about in Sri Lanka. Anyway at that time Sri Lankan govt. had requested IPKF to leave because it was feared that it was causing too much "collateral damage". either way now that LTTE is defeated there is one less thing for the world to worry about. I dont see what point sri lankans see in adopting a hostile anti-Indian attitude now.

The IPKF never had the LTTE surrounded. After some initial defeats against the IPKF, the LTTE retreated into the Vanni jungles and began a guerrilla campaign. The Sinhalese hated the idea of Indian troops in the country and the then president Premadasa armed the tigers and they inflicted enough Indian casualties to get your govt to pull troops out of the country.

Indian troops retreated when it was realised that there was no gain to be madet. India was not harmed by LTTE ops, it was Sri Lanka which was affected by it. IPKF intervention was to aid Sri Lanka and there was nothing else for us to gain other than goodwill. Its a basic fact, you must not be swayed by the spin your government of the day put on it. look at what India stood to gain from sending its troops in harms way for what was essentially your conflict.

India was not harmed directly, except for the people killed when Rajiv Gandhi was bombed. But trust me, we did not invite your troops to Sri Lanka. The president at that time, JR Jayawardene, was a racist if I dare say so and things would have probably turned really bad for Tamils if India hadn't intervened when the LTTE were about to be wiped out in 1987. But they had no right to violate our sovereignty like that. Rajiv even threatened military action against us if we didn't let the IPKF in.

To be perfectly honest, we don't regard the Indian military with much regard. The IPKF failed against the LTTE even before they had a proper navy, much artillery and an air force. We smashed them when they were at their peak. Add to that the fact that 10 young jihadis held Mumbai, a city of 19 million, hostage for almost 4 days and you can understand our attitude towards the Indian military.

Our soldiers were bitterly disappointed when they were ordered to abort the successful Operation Vadamarachchi. Some of them even wanted to fight the IPKF but their superiors advised them against it for obvious reasons. Most Sri Lankans view Rajiv's bombing as something he deserved because he ended up dragging out our war for another 21 years.

We were never openly hostile to the IPKF. Our military wasn't as large or battle-hardened back then and they didn't have a deathwish to attack the Indian army head on. Sinhala opinion was against the IPKF and the military also hated India for saving the LTTE. That's why Premadasa gave Prabha arms to attack you with.

It was a terrorist attack against a specific target, not an invasion across an entire front. The very next day people were reporting for work in nearby buildings ! That's the kind of spirit you will find in Mumbai.
Once the NSG were engaged they made sure that no one else got injured and despite calls "to end it soon" did a thorough and professional job to limit further damage to the heritage structure of the hotel itself.

As for saving the LTTE, if we were saving them why did they attack us. If we had truly supported them, the IPKF would still have been stationed in Jaffna in collusion with the LTTE like some other "liberators" and "peace-keepers" have done around the world.

@User19285 The Indian govt supported the LTTE and the other militant Tamil groups until Rajiv was blown up. The RAW gave them weapons and training. Like I've said here before, we would have DESTROYED THE LTTE IN 1987 but Rajiv stopped us with Operation Poomalai. Then he 'convinced' our then president JR to sign the Indo-Lanka Accord and even changed our constitution. It was basically gunboat diplomacy, no matter how nicely both Indians and Sri Lankans try to gloss over it.

Please do your research on the operations I've mentioned: our Operation Vadamarachchi and your Operation Poomalai. We did not need Indian help to destroy the LTTE in 1987, but Rajiv Gandhi stopped us from doing so.
I doubt India ever wanted to see a Tamil state arise in SL. They just wanted to destabilize us.

@User19285 Rajiv Gandhi was killed because relations between India and the LTTE deteriorated in the wake of the IPKF invasion. The LTTE ended up fighting the IPKF with weapons given to them by our then president Premadasa cos even he hated Indian soldiers being in SL. It was the IPKF's failed mission in SL that gave the LTTE practice in guerrilla warfare, hardened them for future battles with us and gave Prabakaran a god-like image among Tamils. In short, the IPKF was a disaster from the start.

@User19285 India only started supporting us after the IPKF ended up fighting the LTTE and then Rajiv's bombing. Then they were only too glad to see the LTTE finished and gave us aid, though tension in Tamil Nadu stopped them from giving us weapons. India is now one of our greatest allies and I don't view them as an enemy. But most Sinhalese will not forget that India was the hand that fed Prabhakaran until he bit it.

The Indian intervention in Sri Lanka was primarily to thwart a US intervention (military or otherwise) so close to India.
If there were any links with the LTTE, they were destroyed when the LTTE attacked Indian peace-keepers.

With minimal effort they could resort to bombings and terror attacks against key targets. Only a political solution will end the violence.
