Many say that Tao's green talking parrot Kokapetl (Picchu in French dub) was really annoying and irritating and are amazed that no one ate him during the series.
The next 3 seasons of this show when dubbed into English will have to use a new voice cast for the children. I guess they'll be chosen to make sure they sound the same as Zia, Esteban and Tao will only age 1 year or so here. And they most likely will keep calling Mu "Hiva" and Picchu "Kokapetl" too. And I hope they in the name of PC, they don't dumb down the coming seasons. S1 was famous for its many un-PC and naughty moments.
One of the best intros ever. Best part of my day was getting out of primary school and hearing this song. Now if I can only remember that damn duck cartoon I watched in RSA in the early 90s. If anyone knows lemme know!
That is my childhood wrapped up in a ball. I used to play at being some of these characters as a child. Watched in french though, since it was a French-Japanese co-production.
Try watching cartoons like Thundercats, Turtles, Prince Valiant etc now as an adult - they are not enjoyable. Cities of Gold is different, it is as funny, charming, and heart breaking as it ever was. A truly incredible cartoon.
do do do do do ahhhhhhhhh do do do do cities of gold.....brappp! this was the shit! forget transformers, thundercats and he-man, this was the greatest of them all. only ulysses could match the depthof this cartoon but even that wasnt as good. this truley was in a league of it's own!
for everyone who like me has a child's soul and spirit some good news: The writer of the series Jean Chalopin has said that he will continue this classic with 3 new seasons of 26 episodes each with a release date somewhere in 2011. PRAY IT WON'T SUCK !
@cedee2 I just heard about that. Just as long as they keep the same characters (and not this ''20 years later'' bullshit) same story, and same voice actors (or if impossible, voice actors that sounds roughly like the originals) It should be fine. And they need to use the same song. It's so awesome =D
@cedee2 i'll tell you thin IF SOMETHING'S let off the series...it would automatically suck...song was the big part of the show it inspired...it created unique atmosphere if it is not EXACTLY the same, everything else doesn't matter...
I still remember the episode where the children had to put their amulets into the nipples of a gold statue in order to enter a city. They would NEVER do stuff like that now-a-days. I feel sorry for the way we "shield" kids today....
sing along! Children of the sun, see your time has just begun. searching for your way, through adventures everyday. every day and night, with the condor we'll fly with all your friend (???) search for the cities of goooold. ahhhhh ah-ah ah-ah. wishing for the cities of gold. ahhhh ah-ah ah-ah. someday we will find OUR ciites of gold do-do-do-do dah-do.... ah-ah-ah do-do-do-do dah-do cities of gold.
Now THIS is what the intro for a show should be like. Not like today's TV shows where the intro consists of little else but the name of the show flashing on screen for 2.4 seconds.
This theme song has stuck in my head for over 22 years, and now I finally get to see it! Thank you so much. I also have great memories of the docos at the end. A fantastic series and I agree with everyone - so much better to have story driven cartoons rather than the crap these days.
The one thing that always stood out from this cartoon series is the intro music. For the longest time I remember that it made an imprint on me, but I couldn't for the life of me remember how the intro music went. I'm so glad this is now released on DVD.
I loved this show, it blew my mind how there was lost ancient tech in the "new world" being used by 16th century kids and the Mayans. I loved that jet, mistook it for an eagle, looks more like a condor. This was very different from anything else on TV, maybe because unlike other animated shows it was story driven and not driven by action figure toy sales!
this was my fav cartoon b4 the ninja turtles came out and i remember at the end they would show a little doco bout people that lived in the middle east it was great viewing and educational too beats the hell out of spongebob square pants and the shit kids watch theese days! thanks 4 putting this up it brought back lots of good memories
I never once watched this during my childhood; I'd never even heard of it till a couple of years ago. And yet, I love this theme tune so very much. What greater test of the merits of a children's TV programme could there be?
The other characters were the Olmecs who appeared in the later eps. They owned the Golden Condor which the children went off in at the end of the series.
I saw this as a child. Thanks for the memories - the other clip does not have the speech at the start. it was set during the time of the Conquistadors and the Aztecs. There were three children, Esteban (who was a trainee monk who was scared of heights), Zia (who is either an Aztec or an Inca) and Tau (who was Polynesian and had a parrot).

Sadly these days things are dumbed way down and mass marketed, further ruining any creadability of the shows creation.

for some reason i dont remember the show being as epic as the theme song. i think i always changed the channel after the intro.
