i went followed that car through the 1988 season. working for shell i was responsible for the advertising. the sport has changed so much since then and when senna left us. the cars are now taking over the drivers. back then if you wanted to win you needed extreme skill. i remember in monaco when he was one pole by 1.4 secs. then when he came in to the motorhome (a tralier). he just said that was fun. senna=legend. RIP
I know for a fact that Ayrton Senna is the best F1 driver of all time despite him being before my time, but p5 to p1 in 40 seconds on the first lap is just ridiculous! It's hard to beleive that is how good he was, and that McLaren was at a disadvantage? With him at that wheel that McLaren was never at a disadvantage
uh? no way... Vettel, Kimi, Weber, Jens are better drivers little friend... even Paul di Resta or the great G. Tarquini are just one step closer to the concept of "best driver" than Hamilton
Today we remember and mourn once more - the greatest driver the world has seen . He is an immortal and unreachable giant and many who think they are or were good - little do they know... I like the fun Lewis had , great event there. The best times of F1 are over since May 1st, 1994. R.I.P. Beco!
I liked this but a lot of mis information! The car had quite a lot of downforce, and perhaps 700hp, this was after the unrestricted turbo madness of the earlier 80s! Good piece still though:)
i m from Brazil are sundays never was the same and never will...every brazilians enjoy and love him.we know he still around us every moment, thanks Ayrton.
when speaking about formula one, Two names come to mind and in terms of skill AYRTON SENNA and MICHAEL SCHUMACHER i am a schumi fan and both me and michael agree senna was truly unbelieveable
I noticed one glaring error in this absolutely flawless episode of Top Gear...There is absolutely ZERO possibility that Lewie Hamilton holds Ayrton Senna in higher regard and thus is a bigger Senna fan than I ! ! !
can you imagine any of today's F1 drivers, driving to drive a car like McLaren MP4/4 of 1988? impossible! those drivers back then were real race car drivers today these guys rely on more on computers than real driving, i bet hamilton said, how da fuk do i go 140mp in a corrner with that monster?
Lewis Hamilton is no where near the man senna was.....yes he may say he's the no1 senna fan.. but he does not have anything like the senna way of being.... Senna.... Magical words of wisdom.. Lewis.. whining about his engineers and a diamond encrusted helmet............ need i say more....??
Well done at least a modern day f1 driver has admitted that these cars were more of drivers car than what they race today if f1 would just get back to basics instead of these launch controlled semi automatic flappy paddle computer fed crap boxes we might just see another driver like the great AYRTON SENNA emerge from the ranks and who knows formula 1 might just be worth watching again R.I.P. ARYTON SENNA you were the best !!!!
A fantastic film by TG. Just proves they can be serious when they want to. However, wished they hadn't shown Hammond at the end as he always has an expression which you can never take seriously.
I used to get up at around 3-5am to watch all F1 races live for about 10yrs, but (and I hate to say this) when Senna Da Silva died; it killed my passion for motor racing. Watching these videos brings tears not only to my eyes, it brings them streaming down my cheeks...Ayrton Senna P-1 always!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no idea why they brought in Hamilton for this section, he might claim to be sennas number 1 fan and all that but at the end of the day bloods thicker than water, they should have got Bruno Senna to drive the car. Bruno is Ayrtons true successor and they both had that bond between them, Ayrton even said once, if you guys think im fast just wait till you see my nephew. I really hate the way Hamilton acts about senna, he didnt even really know the man, just met him on one occasion I think.

What is it you have against the British?
Oh and the fact you dont actualy say which country you're in says alot really. Just keep such hate towards other countries to yourself. We dont need that on here.
Usually for Britain, the number one rule is always right, rule number two see the first It is impossible to discuss the issue of this topic because it is not her time. And normally that sort of thing you can not a friend to understand because they're not gone in life nothing lived or what I am. So do not talk nonsense, and we will be skirmishing stupid. Not worth a obviously not paid attention to my comment. Very shallow thinking, and probably will never understand that's for sure.
@majkicjovan firstly speak properly secondly dont be racist and thirdly shut up im aussie and really british people are nice so this comes back to my third rule SHUT UP!!!!
@c0nv1ct1337 If you look a little better, Bentley, Rolls, Mini, Lotus, Jaguar, Aston, they are no longer owned by the British. so to say, were sold. Bentley by Volkswagen Group. Mini belongs to BMW, Lotus, was torn into three pieces of shares so that no one is the majority owner. Jaguar is owned by those Indian Tata Group. Aston also just can not remember now but would like to give later. So that the British no longer anything. Not even McLaren also no longer British. What can I say more.
I'm well aware of all of that. You only mentioned Bentley and Aston in your original comment so I didn't bother with the rest of the brands. Aston I believe is still British although it was partly owned by Ford few years back.
@majkicjovan sadly, no one gives to fucks about your beliefs seeing as your spelling is disgraceful and your grammar is absolutely horrendous. LEWIS ( not luis ) is one of the best, he isnt the best ever that title goes to Senna but he sure well is top 5 ever in my books,
and also please name one thing from your country that is better than a British invention
@longhirst202 You British are very stupid people...... Let's say thad one man from my country invent electricity for all world about 110 years ago. I think that is enough for your level of thinking. My grammar I think is understanble becouse I speek 4 languages, what can not be said of you in this case. Otherwise, I stopped to comment on any subject matter but the British just can not to something crap.

so before you try and insult me and Britian get your facts right
@majkicjovan Lotus, Williams, Maclaren -all British. Less of your insults towards the British . It is childish and ignorant. You also have one of the highest poverty rates in the world. You're country is not that advanced .
@ParanoidAndroid90 They both had Mclaren as their team, that's why. And I think you are a bit silly, this is their profession. Of course he has studied his idol. No more strange than a fotboller having someone as their role model since they saw them growing up.
@azynkron , my point was, it would have been an evocative moment if Bruno was given the chance to drive the car that cemented his uncles greatness. seriously what do u think is more sentimental and looks better. a senna in ayrtons mclaren with the yellow helmet, or hamilton in ayrtons mclaren with a yellow helmet. As a brazillian the former would be something truely amazing.
@ParanoidAndroid90 Well, hes not crap cuz he has a crap car. But Lewis is the best driver by far right now. If it wasnt for the cheating racist stewards, he was going to win 07-08-09 back to back! 09 his car was really carp but he still out perfomed. I want F1 to hold a same car race. I bet any money that Lewis, followed by Petrov will be on top. ALL THE DAY LONG!!LOL
@dougiecoolietrini I really dont think u can blame the stewards, well lets have a look, failing to stop at a red light at the pits and hitting raikkonen, cuttin chicanes, liegate australia 2009, lying to the stewards and getting somone else penalised, brake testing in the rain behind the safety car, over taking the safety car. All these things are of his making. He has made some very stupid decisions during his short career. Also 07 and 08 cars were influenced by spygate. that was his teams fault
I wanna cry everytime I see footage of him racing. It's so weird too cause I never really watched F1 all that much, but I've have a love for speed and cars. Seeing him race in those beast is... legendary. I wonder if any driver today can match him.
@whoevers7 I don't think it's BBC America's fault. I'd blame Bernie. From what I've heard, the amount the BBC had to pay FOM just to get these clips on their BBC2 show was so high they apparently can never show the full episode again. Maybe that's why it was cut out of BBC America's version.
i grew up watching senna drive, i always was impressed with the way he understood to find the limits of his car, i think it influenced my way of abording life to this day.
its a duty to make ppl remember who he was, because he made F1 great, and now he's just a forgotten statistic to many of the younger fans of the sport to this day.
Im luchy to come from the same city as Ayrton not only that but same neighborhood
Im just few years younger than him and we have common friend in the area
I first hand witnesses of his skills atr young age
In that area called ZN of the city of Sao paulo .we all use to race on the streets there is a curve on our "circuit" we still call it "S" of Senna cause of its shape
I love how Jeremy ends the show with no joke or larking about and no 'bombshell'. Just silence and no cheering from the crowd, plus all 3 look visibly moved. Great mark of respect from the Top Gear boys, they've done some moving pieces before but this is possibly the best show yet, thought it was great how they could change mood so suddenly, put a lump in my throat for sure. Fantastic example to all the haters why Top Gear is so special, they always have a gem hidden away. Great TV. RIP Senna.
This episode was aired in Australia last night- MINUS THE ONLY FUCKING PART THAT MATTERED- this piece on Senna. I called Channel Nine Australia to ask what the hell they were doing- and they informed me the BBC only lisenced them to show the rest of the episode- not the bit on Senna- some kind of permission was denied- i asked them to explain but they said "Cant tell you any more" I presume this is something to do with FOM's bullshit totalitarian attitude to copyright! As if they own the world!
@malllamoozoo agreed even though you are a wanker i actually agree with you.. crazy how the most important part of the show was missing here in Australia that is rediculous..
@QuickEvolution Thanks for the compliment LOL. Yeah - Formula One Management has gone totally fascist these days - no surprise really when you hear Mosely and Ecclestone praising Hitler - must be they know this piece would generate a lot more interest than the usual Top Gear story and so they could milk even more money out of it - fair enough yeah, as Bernie only has, what $6000 million already ? - needs a bit more I guess. Pricks!
@p4t0p3p3 Yeah cos everyone uses Streetfire net dont they? Never even heard of it you knob - probably has a user base of 20 people! You Tube isnt reliable - ive sent links to this vid to people and by time they try to view it its been removed. I told people to watch it on TV and it was removed from there also. So it IS a problem - think before opening your mindless mouth in future!
@p4t0p3p3 Oh - I am sorry - you are mentally challenged so its not your fault - there are medical services for people like you - medication etc - go to a doctor and just ask for help - they will give it to you.
we all know the supposed story as to why lewis wears his yellow helmet. "his dad wanted to see him better when he was karting". c'mon. senna's yellow and lewis yellow is the same shade and the green ring is in the same area. he truly is senna's #1 fan. what made this american watch F1 was senna because he drove unlike anyone else on the grid. lewis reminds me a lot of senna in the way they drive in the dry or in the wet. like him or hate him he is one hell of a racing "driver".
@TEARINDON1 That car to see it run again. First time I saw it was in Brazil...last time in Japan. I mean Live. I was jumping up and down on that day when he won tht title. People don't understand that when your cheering for someone like Senna, the way he was the way he loved racing and his emotion...it was like he raced for every true fan and when he won...it was a peace of you that won...and when he died...it was a a little bit of us.
Just how amazing those wide-track F1 machines looked! If only we had modern F1 machines with low noses, fatter rear tyres and wider track along with the modern safety features. I'd like an aesthetic revolution of Formula 1.
I met Lewis Hamilton the day before he drove Senna's car. I got pit passes for the Canadian Grand Prix and met Jenson Button after the race as well. I touched the 3 trophies the McLaren team got as well.
I was 11 when Ayrton died.. i remember I cried, that was the darkest weekend of F1 ever when Ratzenberger and Senna died in the same weekend. So sad really. RIP Senna.
and what a greeeaaaat documentary from Top Gear best motoring show!
can someone tell me what is the name of the song at minute 2:51? Thank you for posting this video! That man embodied everything my generation always dreamed off in Brazil!
What a great piece by top gear....but why on earth was it pulled from the repeat? Apparently its never going to be shown again by the BBC ..i presume its that greedy little bastard bernie ecclestone trying to milk more £££ again, what a cunt he is
I was at the office when I've seen this video. I'm a 25yo man and I cried and I had to hide from everyone around, LOL
There's only one word that describes the feeling: SAUDADE
"When there is a gap you either commit yourself as a professional race driver that is disigned to win races or you come 2nd or 3rd or 5th. And I'm not designed to come 3rd of 5th, I race to win.
And if you no longer go for a gap that exist, you are no longer a racing driver"
Ah yes, Jeremy's sad need to be contrarian. He's dead wrong about Villeneuve, you know. Agreed, Senna brought more attention to detail to the task and wasn't handicapped by any sporting considerations. I'm embarrassed for Martin when I hear him try to put a positive spin on routinely setting up an avoidable accident. Not talking about 1990 - Prost and Balestre had that coming. I'd bet my life that Senna would win against Villeneuve more often than not. But Gilles not always spectacular? Jerk.
I'm not afraid to say I bawled my eyes out when I found out he died.
I remember the whole thing watching it live from schummis cockpit cam at the time. I remember he moved his head & we all breathed a sigh of relief. Then the evening news. I didn't want to believe it.
I still have the tribute from the newspaper the next day.
Kinda mad bawling for someone you don't actually know. But...
DID U SAY THAT BOOST BUTTON ON THE STEERING WHEEL THAT IS DON, I WANT ONE OF THEM ON MY FORD FOCUS, LOL

What a rubbish....
*simply CANT contrast different racing-periods for the benefits of one part.
(compared to the 80-is, the 90-is had more races/calendar. more equal teams and entirety the F-1 sport is today faster and harder.)
irrespective of Turbo, HP´s and other masculine attributes! People who praises the 80-is should instead look at the true hardcore-ages in the 1950´s.
-absent brakes,diagonal tyres etc.....
Conclusion: Formula-1 always,all times demand´s GOOD drivers.

The most evolved Traction Control at the time.
And there were some cars that didnt have it at all until barcelona some weekends later.

Seeing him race in those beast is... legendary. I wonder if any driver today can match him.

this episode just aired here in america, and it turns out that they cut this tribute out!
I hate BBC America now.
whoevers7 1 year ago 3
@whoevers7 I don't think it's BBC America's fault. I'd blame Bernie. From what I've heard, the amount the BBC had to pay FOM just to get these clips on their BBC2 show was so high they apparently can never show the full episode again. Maybe that's why it was cut out of BBC America's version.

great video and wonderful what Top Gear did
its a duty to make ppl remember who he was, because he made F1 great, and now he's just a forgotten statistic to many of the younger fans of the sport to this day.

Im just few years younger than him and we have common friend in the area

As if they own the world!
malllamoozoo 1 year ago 3
@malllamoozoo agreed even though you are a wanker i actually agree with you.. crazy how the most important part of the show was missing here in Australia that is rediculous..
QuickEvolution 1 year ago
@QuickEvolution Thanks for the compliment LOL. Yeah - Formula One Management has gone totally fascist these days - no surprise really when you hear Mosely and Ecclestone praising Hitler - must be they know this piece would generate a lot more interest than the usual Top Gear story and so they could milk even more money out of it - fair enough yeah, as Bernie only has, what $6000 million already ? - needs a bit more I guess. Pricks!

we all know the supposed story as to why lewis wears his yellow helmet.

RIP

ZClipze 1 year ago
