Continued: I found that I could put the pieces of pipe together with "NO" gap and just crank up the heat and jam the rod in tight and move as per required, sometimes faster and sometimes slower.
With NO gap I found that I could also do the root pass up hand, the same idea,by jamming the rod in at the 6 oclock position and drag it all the way up.
It was more awkward to perform but that way still passed all X Rays.
That was just to please the welding inspectors who caught me downhand welding.
Continued: Also if you have to perform the final pass( Cap Pass) with 7018 you have the chance of leaving a little bit of undercut along the edges of the weld.Unless you really focus on getting the back and forth weave just perfect and the temperature just right with your remote control and have your welders helper continually adjusting the current so you can carry the molten bead from side to side in a manner that does not leave any slight under cutting from the 4 oclock to 2 oclock postions
Continued: When the welding codes call for all the passes, including the root pass, to performed "Up Hand" it causes problems because gravity is causing the molten metal bead to "roll" back or downwards and requires more control and manipulation of the welding rod to keep the bead uniform with no "under cut" on the inside of the pipe.
quishypoo: According to the Pressure Vessels Codes, Pipelines, buried under ground, can be welded with 6010 to 7010 welding rods and used for down hand welding of pipelines ...for all passes.
The codes are somewhat of a pain in the ass for welders.
Once you learn to do all your welding down hand ( Every Pass ) with 6010 or 7010 or even 8010 welding rods you come to realize it is the most effective way to weld for many pipe welding applications.
Celtic67ize: Could be some slag or wagon tracks that need a little bit of attention so dig the rod in a little more by moving it side to side to make sure the slag or wagon tracks are gouged out by the force of the arc.
He reminds me of a young Charlie Drake,i wonder if he is still wanting to fight the world after two pints,he would`nt look out of place in Broadmoor or Rampton, but deep down he is a nice enough kid.
first came across our Craig up at Evanton when he was a young lad,it was six months before we got to see his face, all we could see was the back of his head in font of Bens and big Johns trouser zip,a likeable lad but with more personalitys than Rory Bremner and Alistair McGowan combined, nice to see he has finaly got the hang of them nasty stick rods.
why the rapid hand movement Craig at 2`oclck,i only do that when running bead, you`ve been watching too many You Tube videos, are you still putting a 5 cent piece in your lug hole when welding, just like the 798 guys we worked with.Clown.

It is easier and it allows for less flaws.
