@laundrymunkey1414 Why not, I've got E A D G C on my five string, and people like Edgar Meyer use solo tuning with a low E, so it seems like a good idea if you are doing loads of solo playing.

@laundrymunkey1414 Yep, 5 string double bass. They are not that uncommon, although to be honest I still use my 4 string more. Have you not seen Renaud Garcia Fons play yet?

@clancywiggam im from los angeles-never heard of him--of course i knwo there are five strings i just wasnt aware of people using high c's--only a lower b string--im not doubting its him for any other reason that they video and my concept of how to play bass dont match

I know because I play in there too (classical guitar) and I've run into Vassily and heard him play it with my own ears.
