I really wish people would learn that LOUD does not always equal GOOD. Thats always been one of the issues I've had with Southern's version of this song. Blaring horns take away from the essence of the song.

Listen to "free2drink"'s video from 2004 (SU vs. Ala.St.). Both schools played "Neck". You cannot deny that musicianship plays a major part of any arrangement. That said, the most fearless trumpet section in the land (Southern) comes out on top. Ala. St. always has good band and will never be embarrassed by SU or anyone else. BTW, Alabama State has since "tweaked" their arrangement of "NECK". My main point is: Nobody wants to be FAMU. Everybody aims for Southern.

@CaribouRancher As a former HBCU band member myself (MVSU '96-'99 T-Bone), I understand that everyone wants to be Southern. However, I also know great arrangements when I hear them. A section does not make a band. SU has a hell of a trumpet section, but the complete arrangement of Neck by ASU is wonderfully crafted. At the same time, NO ONE GOES HARDER THAN SOUTHERN!! And that is coming from someone that has played against them for 3 years in a row!!

I too, have been through the wars. Trumpet section at Alabama State (78-81). I also arranged music for high school and colleges. You are correct..."a section does not make a band." However, keep- in-mind that there are songs that have to be arranged differently based on strengths and weaknesses of upper and lower brass sections. Look, I love Alabama State but I've always tried to remain neutral when it comes to listening to other bands. Great arrangement, Hornets! OK?

If SU is sitting on the other side of the field and you play this song, they are going to "plaster" you. It's not that SU "blasts" songs, their band is balanced differently from all others. They are a top-heavy brass band with a small number of woodwinds. Also, their band is not heavy on percussion like every other band. In addition, their arrangements are just plain better. That's why everybody and I mean EVERYBODY, compares themselves to SOUTHERN.

@CaribouRancher I agree! I played in Mississippi Valley State's Mean Green Marching Machine and I have heard all of the SWAC play this song. However, I will say this: Southen has some of the best arrangements in all of musicianship, but their version of Neck fails in comparison to Alabama State's version! Their arrangment and their sound ON JUST THIS SONG is the best that I have heard . . . . period!

I was liking it at FIRST but it got waaaayyy to long for me....too many dance movements and every section had about 3 solos each...it was so long to the point wear the camera man couldnt get it all. Nice sounds overall but some of the solos need some more fixing...and more volume wouldnt hurt either.
