I still don`t think that we`ll be conveying to hospital by bicycle and I`m sure that where ever people build they will add roads which have routes to and from hospitals, firehouses,& police stations. I don`t think they can afford SUV`s or hummers, instead I bet a lot of them choose instead public transportation or bikes (when weather permits) or car pools, they would want to go with the cheaper option. City planners are famously reticent to tax smog since is a virtual tax on the poor. A gas-powered lawnmower, or old car, emits more smog in one hour than the average new car does in a year of driving. Therefore, a poor person would not have to drive very often to still be able to exceed the smog output of a non-poor person.

Once again Doren is missing the point entirely. “Let's try to not be so dependent on cars” does not mean “let’s not drive any dying people to the hospital.” To use his logic in a counter-argument, “Why are we driving at all? World Car Free day is a day to try to move beyond inefficient single occupancy vehicles in cities... How simple minded do you have to be to think its about the total eradication of vehicles! Americans need to walk more, one of the reasons why this country has such a high obesity rate is we drive everywhere, we do not walk anywhere, we have sidewalks, but I never see people using them. Plus, if there were less cars on the road, the ambulances, buses, and delivery services would get to their destinations faster. It would mean cleaner air and greater ease of parking for those who need to use their cars. And it would give people more exercise.
I wouldn't call these positive effects 'imprudent'. I think it's more imprudent to ignore the possibility of the harm we are doing to the planet and the need to find an alternative to non-renewable fuels.

I don't think world car free day prevented the use of ambulances and other emergency services.
The scenarios you discussed, commercial deliveries and emergency vehicles, might work better with less private non-essential traffic in the way.
Taking aside the environment and all that for while. A single day dedicated to getting around differently could be fun. You might make a new friend on the subway, discover that someone on your walk to work has a pretty garden or other simple pleasures.

I`m not sure I see what you mean. I still don`t think that we`ll be conveying to hospital by bicycle and I`m sure that where ever people build they will add roads which have routes to and from hospitals, firehouses,& police stations. I don`t think ambulances will ever be replaced with something slower because in the end that would be dangerous, I do however believe that we should probably (hopefully?) change gas guzzling emergency vehicles with more economical, environmentally sound engines.

SULEV stands for Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. I don`t think that the poorest people are driving the biggest cars. I don`t think they can afford SUV`s or hummers, instead I bet a lot of them choose instead public transportation or bikes (when weather permits) or car pools, they would want to go with the cheaper option. And although low-emission vehicles are coming onto the market at high rates right now, hopefully the tax credit and long term economic gain will help counter the high cost

City planners are famously reticent to tax smog since is a virtual tax on the poor. A gas-powered lawnmower, or old car, emits more smog in one hour than the average new car does in a year of driving. Therefore, a poor person would not have to drive very often to still be able to exceed the smog output of a non-poor person.

I'm sorry, when did I bring up anything to do with tax smog? I was pointing out the cheaper modes of transportation that are available and also environmentally friendly. Where did I suggest putting a tax on smog which would concurrently tax the poor? I actually tried to point out that poorer people wouldn't be able to afford cars (taxes and all) so they would go for a cheaper option.

I'm sorry, you're right it's not really the size of the car that matters. What matters is that older model cars and large engine cars require more gas, emit more exhaust and are generally BAD for the environment in which we live. Not only are they pollutants they are also expensive to maintain. It is really too bad that SULEV cars aren't at a more reasonably priced for everyone to enjoy (yet).

Gasoline is one of the sources of pollutant gases. Even gasoline which does not contain lead or sulfur compounds produces carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide in the exhaust of the engine which is running on it. Furthermore, unburnt gasoline and evaporation from the tank, when in the atmosphere, react in sunlight to produce photochemical smog. and ethanol increases the volatility of gasoline. Finally, the price of gasoline doesn't make it any easier on those who can't afford it.

Actually carbon dioxide is what animals naturally breathe out. Plants in turn take in the carbon dioxide and separate the carbon to produce oxygen for the animals again. Carbon dioxide also however prevents the sun's radiation from leaving earth's atmosphere which is why it is referred to as a greenhouse gas. So if we can learn to stop breathing, everything should be fine.

Was back in like 1998 or 1999, can't remember for sure, but the protesters got in trouble due to not having a permit. Was all over the news back then in Oregon. Some guy, if I recall correctly, had a heart attack and the ambulance could not get into sacred heart.
