Polanski originally pled not guilty, then agreed to plead guilty in return for a specifically light sentence and having five of the six charges against him dropped. The judge reneged on the deal suggesting jail time and deportation were in order. Not wanting to do jail time, Polanski basically deported himself. Would you really want to live where you can't trust the word of the justice system?

People can have many motivations for arguing in favor of Polanski. Some of them being a deep hatred for lynch mobs, the self-righteous, and those who take accusations as fact.
This is kind of interesting, though. I believe liberals are conflicted on this one. Polanski is Jewish, but he is also accused of forcibly raping a 13-year-old girl. Liberals tend to be radical feminists, and feminists believe all men are rapists, but he is Jewish, and because of the holocaust, he gets some PC leeway.
