1. Campbells Russian Dwarf Hamsters. Cost about $15 each at Petco.

2. They are not hard to take care of or feed. They need a roomy cage, if a hamster cage is too expensive for you a large plastic bin can be used. Get one tall enough that they can't jump out or drill air holes in the lid.

3. They will stay playful most of their life and will always use the wheel. A wheel is a necessity for them to get exercise. They only live 2 to 3 years.

When I was in junior school we used to make epic mazes fort the class Hamster, Dibble (as in topcat ;P) out of this strange building set comprising of plastic flat squeares that you attached together. He used to love running around inside it hiding all his food. :D This however, makes it look kinda lame.

Oh wow. You've really inspired me. We have a lot of those toy houses/garage/towns lying about that my nephew and nieces no longer play with. We were planning on throwing them away but they would make an awesome playpen for my hamsters! Yes, I've now go myself a project to keep me busy through the upcoming holiday! :)

Yes, they're children's toys made by Fisher Price and Little Tikes. I add wheels to some of them, cut large openings into some of them, and remove any parts that might be harmful. I bought the toys at flea markets and yard sales.

Promise to clean the hamster cage every week. Write out an agreement of what all you'll do for the hamster, feed, water, play, clean cage. It is true that you will be very sad when one dies, and that will happen as they only live 2 to 3 years, but it's part of life's cycle, and experience. She'll probably like the hamster after you get one. I'm a grandmother and the hamsters in my videos were mine and my grandsons. I don't have any now, they've all passed on. Let me know if you get one.

I take all the toys outside and wash them with the garden hose and leave them in the sun to dry. The flooring in the playground can be washed in my washing machine.

I want one of this! Why don't you just link the cage to this so the hamster can play all day. I'm sure he gets pretty bored in his cage. My sister's friend has an aweshum cage all the way from her front door to under her bed. The whole tunnel thing had several layers and holes where the hamsters could pop out if they wanted to. Then there's a 4-layered cage attached to a garden with a mini-pond. And what's more she had like 35 hamsters from dwarf to mini. Like the GM ones ya know:) Cool!

@xoxmiraclebelieverxo The hamster was potty trained, he always went in his sand potty so I just dumped the soiled sand and put in clean. Also this is a playground, not a cage, so he was only in it for short periods of time.

I made the playground. If you'll scroll way down you'll find some details in other posts. It's approximately 6 feet x 3 feet. The front of it is Plexiglas so I can see in, the other sides are wood paneling covered with wall paper to look like flowers, trees, and sky. The houses, toys, track, etc. are Fisher Price or Little Tikes toys I bought at yard sales. The flooring is washable carpet to look like grass. This was a playground only, my hamsters had cages for living quarters.

Most of the things in the playground are children's toys that I bought at rummage sales. I added some hamster wheels. It's not hard to clean, I take all the toys out into the yard and hose them down. The floor in the playground is indoor/outdoor carpet and it can be washed in the washing machine. The hamsters were not in the playground for very long at a time so it didn't get dirty often.

My dog doesn't want to eat him, she wants to play. They were good friends, Fluff thought the hamster was her pet. Fluff would sit by his cage and watch him, they would touch noses through the bars. Of course, I never let them be together without bars or Plexiglas separating them. Zebedee recently passed away, Fluff and I both miss him.

The hamster's name is Zebedee. The dog's name is Fluff. Zebedee isn't afraid of Fluff. He use to go up to the bars of his cage and touch noses with Fluff.

The materials to make the playground costs around $50, not counting any of the toys, etc. in it. Most of them were bought at yard sales or thrift shops for $1 to $5 each.

I made the playground. It costs me about $40 - $50 for the materials. The playground is 3 feet x 6 feet and 18 inches tall. The sides and back of it are paneling, (get this at Lowes or Home Depot) the front is clear 1/8" thick Plexiglas (get this at a glass/window store). The Plexiglas was the most expensive part. The playground sits on a table I made from shelving units or it could just sit on the floor. The table is covered with green indoor/outdoor carpeting (Lowes or Home Depot).

actually pine and other evergreen trees are harmful to hamsters and can cause respiratory problems. that's pretty common knowledge and has been for 20 years. you're supposed to check wooden toys and shavings to make sure they are not pine.
