Who needs all of those Youtube-phenomenon were people are 6 persons playing on one guitar, when you can find real and honest music like this! This is the way all of those "cirkus-artists" really want to play!
I too first heard this on Dylan's Good As I Been To You album. Love Bob's version, love this one, both beautiful. What...a song to leave on the earth. How wonderfully sung. Orginal has "spalpeen" (migrant worker); Bob sings "snappy". Both work. Bob knows a great song when he hears it, and there can be no doubt that he enjoys Paul Brady's version as much as any of us do.

i first heard dylan do this on good a i been to you,but this knocked me out ,what i'd give to play this just once does anybody know the tuning used for this and mary and the soldier
@hanghang71 Arite man, Arthur Mc Bride is CGDGBD and Mary and the Soldier is DGDGBD altho i think even for artur here ya can kick the C to a D same tuning but both sound deadly!!:)
Whatever the time period, to me, this song is about that one, fleeting moment of victory against oppression. I've never experienced one. That doesn't mean I believe the main character of this song did either. I'm getting critique on other sites because this stuff about the Irish being great fighters seems to be more about songs, invention and bullshit than actuality. Makes for great stories. And the Irish are sure fun and funny and human. But full of crap. My kids are half Irish so lay off...
@brelfan What an odd sentiment. I'm not sure I disagree....more that its more like you tried to push too much into one comment. Like, can we not have a musical tradition without someone having to act as judge and generalist over our nationality and culture as a whole?? Also its not genetic, you are either from here or you aren't.
Mudcat Cafe says the song is from the 1800's, but as far as "The Troubles", I thought that basically that all stems from the days of Oliver Cromwell & his persecution of Irish Catholics in the 1600's, not to mention that the Irish had no representation in British Parliament for centuries.
OMG, that's the most incredible Irish male tenor voice I've ever heard. I've had a recording of the song for awhile but it's awesome to find a video of him singing it. And what a strange song - was it justifiable homicide, or not? Is the song a metaphor for the "troubles" between the Irish & British, or - ? Seems to me the two Irishmen jumped the gun, so to speak, striking 1st, but - the other guys were armed soldiers, after all, hard to tell from the lyrics.
@mcjazzer - the song is set way before theTroubles. Think when armies used to carry swords (the 'rusty rapiers that hung by their side'). The British army here used to go round recruiting Irishmen to join the army and fight in the war in France. As it still sometimes is nowadays, the army was often the only way for some sections of society to make a living. Don't quote me, but the song could be set in the 1800s.
went to see paul brady in concert and i went to the bands restroom cause id just found out he is my 3rd cousin so he said he wanted to know more as they tried to throw me out, and i talked a bit with him for 5 mins, nice man, its a shame i was a bit tipsy or i might have been able to talk to him a bit longer, legend!
Possibly the best live performance on the whole of YouTube. I don't think any of Paul's later recordings gets near the standard vocally or can match his amazing guitar playing. That said, he's still a wonderful singer/ songwriter.
@yotter58 Yes he is, but I'm glad you said that, I've often wondered why in this era he attained this very special level both vocally and instrumentally that was just stunning; hard to believe anyone could play like that and sing in that tessitura for the entire song in a totally relaxed fashion -it strains credulity, frankly. Nothing I've ever heard after comes close in my opinion, and that said, he's played and sung wonderful things since, just not like this...
Is this a traditional variant, or is he taking liberties with the lyrics? It fits either way.
The guy is a master of his instrument. His technique is at once free-form and polished, and note the heavy use of arpeggios and double- or triplestops rather than full chords. He's also combining pick with fingerstyle, avoiding the muting problem with open tunings, creating a dynamic, less droney sound.
@dorrispickle youre a retard, im crazy and i didnt dislike this. sounds like you got no mind of your own. im irish too. so before you open your mouth about crazy people you might as well shove a sock in your mouth to shut yourself up.
When I first heard Paul's amazing version of that wonderful song so many years ago it nearly drove me to tears - and left me gaping at his dexterity and incredibly resourceful playing. At that time I was just starting out on open tunings so this one came in as a real shock. I was at once downhearted and inspired at the same time: I realized just how little I knew - but he also showed me what can be achieved if you really stick to it. Paul has remained a very important inspiration ever since.
paul brady is not only the greatest ambassador of irish music. tina turner bob dylan mark knoffner etc are all big brady fans, check out who wrote steel claw for tina turner,

Anyway, I do not know anybody who can interpret certain songs better than Paul Brady. For me it is Arthur McBride and Lakes of Pontchartrain which nobody is in the same league as Paul Brady!
Don't think so. When he strums without any fingering in the root chord, it sounds like a major chord. It "drones" like there were several D's and A's in it, I have tried DADF#AD which is an open tuning in D, but where I see Paul's fingers go, and try and emulate that, it doesn't work. Hmmm... I'll just have to play in in standard, but you can't beat the tuning he has, whatever it is! :) Thanks Yags

@bufufrog "This has to be the greatest anti-war song ever" Do you think!! I'd say it is certainly a great song but wouldn't it be classed more a rebel song than an actual anti-war song? It isn't exactly anti-violence as they've just smashed in a wee drummer boy's brains because of a verbal argument.

I heard this on the radio quite some time ago and wrote it down on a scrap of paper, which then got lost amid other scraps of paper, and am so pleased to finally hear this lovely tune again.
@PistolPackinMamma I thought this was about a murder on Christmas too for years until I heard this a few months ago. It's about Christmas and a lashing. Also about unappealing methods for enlisting soldiers. Also, perhaps, about bragging.
As an aside, Joseph O' Connor used this song as a central theme to his bestselling book 'Star of the Sea' a few years back. Great book if you like this song by the way.
I'm going to make you all mad at me.. this is the first time I ever heard of Paul Brady. I'm impressed. He has a beautiful voice, plays very well, and tells a good story. What's not to like?
@MrJedd52 Yeah, he'd never make it past the auditions, would he? They're really not looking for performers that stand out, only for those that will "fit" the current style of pop music. Anyone else, no matter how good, is excluded.

@blutah I agree wholeheartedly with you. This is one of my favourite book series as well, I always look forward to his books. It saddens me just fast I read through them though. Then I have to wait all over for the next one again. I also have to say, that the time it is taking for Jacky and Jaimy to get married is quite funny, although a bit sad. That's karma for you! And I never expected her to *SPOILER* marry John Higgins! What a twist! What a turn!! WHAT A SHOCKER!!! :O
@RawrMulti LOL me too. Avan likes this folk hippy stuff..! Okay, so this is irish folk music which is why you can't really understand it. It is like listening to my relatives in Ireland...then they tell me they can't understand my "american" accent.
Been listening to this for 30 years and never get tired of it, got the album in vinyl and listened constantly until turntable gave up. Fortunately got the Liberty Tapes on CD excellent live performances. The man is a genius and doesn't get the credit he deserves, Strabanes best export!!!
Compulsively listening to this for days. Excellent song and musicianship. Knew of Dylan's version and liked it. Don't think the language was as clear, so I thought it was a story about people murdering each other on a beach.
@jimbozy Version on his web page is not correct. There are a good few changes its just a guys interpretation of it. The tuning is ok apart from the low E being a C. You can follow his left hand easy enough its just two finger chords. If you get his right hand down give me a shout you will be my hero
Damn!!!! Am looking at this in Germany and they´ll not let me see n hear The homes of Donegal on Youtube....Is this George Bush's doing? Punchestown racecourse is in County Kildare, Ireland for them that care....for them that dont..... could i give a Shite???
Saw and heard this guy for the first time when he played support TOand WITH Mark Knopfller and Dire Straits at Punchestown Racecourse in, ohhhhhhhhhhhh. lol, i guess it was 1984 or thereabouts and I´ve been blown away by anything the guy does. Any o' ye guys knocking this extremely talented singer/player, gotta make appointments to see a Phsyciatrist or whatever your preference is when it comes to the thing you call a mind. WTG PAUL BRADY
@megaloganiac: The song is on the 1976 eponymous album with Andy Irvine. Brady performs it quite similar there. Actually the whole record is brilliant, even though this track stands out as the highlight. But there aren't many records on which it wouldn't.

This song is in my favorite series! Bloody Jack <3 Best books ever :)

Guitar tuning and tab for this great song are available on the Paul Brady website. Playing it as well as this? - well now there's the rub.
jimbozy 1 year ago
@jimbozy Version on his web page is not correct. There are a good few changes its just a guys interpretation of it. The tuning is ok apart from the low E being a C. You can follow his left hand easy enough its just two finger chords. If you get his right hand down give me a shout you will be my hero

Damn!!!! Am looking at this in Germany and they´ll not let me see n hear The homes of Donegal on Youtube....Is this George Bush's doing? Punchestown racecourse is in County Kildare, Ireland for them that care....for them that dont..... could i give a Shite???
t0mmymann 1 year ago
Saw and heard this guy for the first time when he played support TOand WITH Mark Knopfller and Dire Straits at Punchestown Racecourse in, ohhhhhhhhhhhh. lol, i guess it was 1984 or thereabouts and I´ve been blown away by anything the guy does. Any o' ye guys knocking this extremely talented singer/player, gotta make appointments to see a Phsyciatrist or whatever your preference is when it comes to the thing you call a mind. WTG PAUL BRADY

What tuning is this in then? Open C or G? Theres so many different theorys!
Bowen151 1 year ago
@Bowen151 The tuning is from low to high CGDGBD tough enough to get the low C bang on but a beautiful tuning to play around with when you do!

@megaloganiac: The song is on the 1976 eponymous album with Andy Irvine. Brady performs it quite similar there. Actually the whole record is brilliant, even though this track stands out as the highlight. But there aren't many records on which it wouldn't.
