i work as a news reporter (on a local level), and honestly i think it was kind of pushing it to show him the pictures like that. in that kind of situation, you can't push the interviewee like that...your job is to make them as comfortable as possible in an uncomfortable situation. showing him the picture, to me, was stirring the pot.
If you read Jaycee's memoir, you'll find out that Carl was/is a total tool. He's not even with Jaycee's mother anymore and he was mainly relieved when Jaycee was found because he wasn't considered a suspect anymore.
