@tbe987 Gosh, how stupid must you be that you can not think of Lyman Frank Baum, before typing something so ignorant about the movie itself. Your stupid comment alone makes "WHOEVER" roll on his grave.
@painlessissuicide Completely ignorant comment, THE COLOR PURPLE is the best movie about the black experience, and it did not need a "BLACK" director for it to be more than the masterpiece it already is.
THE WIZ is proof that some things are made way ahead of their time, and it also had the huge obstacle of being compared to one of the most BELOVED films of all time, so the scrutiny was going to be harsh and plentiful.
@painlessissuicide LOL, do your research. The cinematographers at the Academy sure thought the cinematography by OSWALD MORRIS, not SIDNEY LUMET, was worthy of an Oscar nomination.
It was a well known cinematographer that shot THE WIZ (who won an Oscar for a musical, Fiddler on the Roof, and was nominated for OLIVER!, another great musical, and shot MOULIN ROUGE (1952), another great movie about a music establishment), so quit embarrassing yourself with your pointlessness.
@Christale471 Lol cool i have no idea what that is... lol My school are showing off against a performing arts school cuz we're a sports collage and we picked the wiz to do
@traetv27 Creepy indeed, great make-up work, totally worth of an Oscar; too bad the Academy did not give out that Oscar in 1979, then again, the movie deserved more Oscar nominations and at least the Oscar for Song score, the music adaptation is phenomenal, one of the best ever.
@jojo34209 ..Yes! and Diana Ross (nomatter how people may judge her) though she may not be my favorite person, she is a very good actress and she really showcased a strong side of her vocals in this movie than she has ever did in her own recordings or with The Supremes.
@traetv27 You are absolutely right; her version of HOME is impeccable, probably her most heartfelt rendition, just like IS THIS WHAT FEELING GETS, the one song from THE WIZ soundtrack that sadly and mind-bogglingly did not make it to the movie.
@jojo34209 It's funny how some of the best songs never make the cut. All in all the movie did good urbanly i must say but globally it wasn't highly spoken of, people were not very happy with Mrs. Ross as Dorothy being as though Dorothy was supposed to be a young girl and it's clear Diana even without make-up couldn't look the age, Michael is what gave the movie it's buz believe it or not. And he most likeley only took the role so he could work with Diana Ross.
@traetv27 The movie was a financial flop in the US alone, and Diana Ross was never set to play a young girl like Judy Garland did, but instead Dorothy in this film became a single woman with no direction in her life, and that is the main problem the movie had, ignorant people expecting the same adaptation as in The Wizard of Oz, which was never what Sidney Lumet intended. And Michael took the role not only to work with Diana, but part of his agreements with music producer Quincy Jones.
@traetv27 Michael was notorious for his own short movies via music videos, besides that i believe The Wiz was his only acting job besides his music videos. Nevertheless he was an outstanding actor ( If you ask me that is).
@traetv27 Diana Ross has always been a skilled, expressive , but way under appreciated singer. And I think most of that is due to political jealousy. I mean what hell? She has no Grammy.
@missblueberry24 ..I love Sparkle especially the song "what can i do, with this feeling"...did you know they were going to redo Sparkle and had Aaliyah still been living she would have played her?
@warlaker Well, let's see: Barbra's EVERGREEN and THE WAY WE WERE and ENOUGH IS ENOUGH with Donna Summer, who also had LAST DANCE and HOT STUFF and BAD GIRLS; Melissa Manchester's LOOKING THROUGH THE EYES OF LOVE; Olivia's HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU; Debbie Boone's YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE; The Bee Gees' HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE; Natalie Cole's EVERLASTING LOVE; Diana Ross' HOME; Frank Sinatra's NEW YORK NEW YORK; Abba's DANCING QUEEN; Carly Simon's NOBODY DOES IT BETTER; GEEZ, YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT.
@warlaker Oh my goodness, and what about THE CARPENTERS: WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN, FOR ALL WE KNOW, I NEED TO BE IN LOVE, CLOSE TO YOU, BLESS THE BEAST AND THE CHILDREN, ALL YOU GET FROM LOVE IS A LOVE SONG, ONLY YESTERDAY, PLEASE MR. POSTMAN, SOLITAIRE.
YES YES, THE 70'S WERE SOOOOOOOOO GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a stupid woman ask me once if THE WIZ is that "CARTOON" movie with Michael Jackson. I wanted so much to punch her teeth in, but I realized she is such an ignorant goon, why bother with her idiocy.
THE WIZ IS THE MOST UNDERRATED AND UNAPPRECIATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME. A TRUE CLASSIC INDEED.
@jojo34209 its because it a cast of afroamericans lol didnt you know that if it was a cast of beautiful white american or white skinned people it would have been rated off the charts.. oh already there is one the wizard of oz how forgetful of me.lol i love the wiz and the wizard of oz just the same regardless of what the cast is
@jojo34209 I agree with you with all my heart. This movie is one of the greatest musical/movie I have ever seen. just remember stupid people always make your want to suit up for the ring, but remember there are to many of them.
@PotentialFashionista And also RIP everyone from the main cast that has passed away before their time. Thank heavens we have Miss Ross around for all the memories.

I decided to check this out to prepare to audition for a production of this show not too long from now. I notice the music is awesome, as is the set and costume design, but there's a lot lacking in the choreography in the songs. The songs are long, which is fine as long as you can make it interesting, but they kind of dropped the ball there. But I realize they probably didn't have a big enough budget to make everything as awesome as the music is.
@pierced05 AND Stanley Greene, the actor who played Uncle Henry is still alive! Do you know that he actually has born in Harlem, the place where this movie is located?
@GForceChipmunks omg- i used to run around the house when i was little singing this. critics and haters say the movie was horrible b/c diana was too old and blah blah blah. This is the first movie I saw in the movies. I went with my daycare and to this day it is my favorite movie. My daycare provider looked just like Mabel King!
0:00 through 0:26 beat(intro) is so ahead of it's times to be a beat made in the 1970's and the song itself is enough.Great song for a great movie.R.I.P. Mabel King
i love Mabel King. I had only known her from What's Happening!! and then when I saw this, I recognized her immediately. She did an amazing job on this!! I absolutely love her. God rest her soul. RIP Mabel King
okay so here it is my anthem for the week. Just a side note, is it just me or does she really have a voice VERY similar to Kathy Taylor especially that ending.
Awesome! DON'T YOU BRING ME NO BAD NEWS:)

Sidney Lumet is one of the greatest directors ever
however, he just isn't suited for a musical
if they had a director more familiar with the genre (or at least one that was black) the film probably would've been better received

@jojo34209 look at the cinematography -- there is none!
he just leaves the camera rolling, either stationary shots, on tracking shots, or that awful "pan really far back" shot
the man just wasn't meant to direct musicals
dialogue based dramas are what he does

0:00 through 0:26 beat(intro) is so ahead of it's times to be a beat made in the 1970's and the song itself is enough.Great song for a great movie.R.I.P. Mabel King

okay so here it is my anthem for the week. Just a side note, is it just me or does she really have a voice VERY similar to Kathy Taylor especially that ending.
