  • Two years late but still WOW! Good job on all fronts but the voice, outstanding!

  • I know! I know!

    It's Rainbow Connection!

    What do I win?!

    :=)

    Lovely performance.

    I like your voice a lot;

so smooth and strong and confident and sweet.

5 stars, a sub, and a standing ovation!

I love the dreads on your uke, too,

  • I LOVE THAT SONG!! That would be a great song for her next venture? : )

  • This is awesome. I love your voice and your style!

  • Thank you! Let me know if you get anywhere close to Memphis, TN! I would love to sit through a concert of yours. : ) As for your question I think it resembles "Body and Soul" and you even sound like Ms. Fitzgerald singing it...but I know little about theory..it just sounds like that song to me??

  • The very thought of you?

  • Sweeet! I'm an instant fan. Thanks.

  • WOW! I LOVE THIS! you make me smile ... a lot...

p.s. excellent scatting... snaps for you

  • "nearness of you" ...?

  • i keep hearing "guess who i saw today - but you'd need more than just "sarcastic eyes" to sing that at a wedding ... how about a clue for those of us with a less than firm grip on music theory - but are looking at a looong and sleepless night in any case? ... :o)

  • "these foolish things" ... ? good voice, lovely stuff - thanks.

  • nope, although that song is awesome!

  • OK Ali, this is my final attempt. The first thing I thought of when I read the title of your song was the song "Near You" (1947) by the Andrews Sisters. I immediately dismissed the idea because the title was so similar. It has most of the chords you use, including the modulations. Anyway, that's my final guess.

    KEN

  • You have some serious guesses! I don't know that Andrews Sisters song, but now I'll have to look it up. I'd like to send you a surprise...

  • I love surprises and I accept, but I'd still like to get it right. Am I right in thinking that it is a 30's or 40's song, or is it something like "All My Lovin'" by the Beatles? That has the same opening three chords as your song and the chorus goes to the submediant chord.

    KEN

  • OK, this time I am certain. the chord sequence isn't identical, but you have so many elements from Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind" that it has to be correct. It has that dominant 7th with a raised 5th, the middle 8 start with the chord of VI and has that dominant 7th on the supertonic, etc.

    Tell me I'm wrong.

    KEN

  • That's all true, but I think the thing from Georgia that always stands out to me is the dominant III7 chord (or V7/vi) in the second measure. You're totally right about the other stuff, but keep in mind my tune has the extended last A section, and Georgia doesn't. I'm willing to send you a surprise, since you're able to justify your answer so well. :)

  • Every time I think of one, I realise that some bits don't fit. Hwoever, I think that the middle * (Am F7 Am D7) holds the clue. Ain't Misbehavin'" had this. I will have one more try. I'll think for a while longer.

  • The middle is not the key to it. It's more in the form and the message. The middle to the model song goes:

    ii | V7 | I | V7/IV

    IV | iii VI | ii | V

I'm sure there's songs that use the middle like my song, but not the model.

  • This is such a lovely song and you sung it so beautifully!! I'm loving your originals.

My guess is "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke?

  • Thanks, but that wasn't it. I accompanied this tune once at a wedding!

  • Just spectacular. I'll leave the guessing to others - I just knows whats me likes, and me likes that quite a bit.

  • Thanks!

  • I knew it!!! Your voice is much too polished to be a noobie singer AND a noobie ukie. Although it would be too much of coincidence given the name of YOUR song, and the chord changes, although tight and true, don't really go with the song I have in mind, I'm stickin my neck out and saying "the nearness of you". Loved the scatting, missed the whisteling (was that your minor?). Beautiful song.

  • nope! Good guesses by all, though.

  • "Misty" Ella Fitzgerald

  • Then it has to be "As Time Goes By".

  • nope!

  • "anything but love"

  • no- I don't know that one, either!

  • "Ain't Misbehavin'".

    KEN

  • nope!

  • What a stunning song Ali. You sang it beautifully.

When I was younger I played in a dance band. I knew about 1000 numbers pretty much from memory. I know this and it is going to drive me crazy. Your tune over the top makes it much more difficult to place.

    Anyway, 1000 stars.

    KEN

  • I played in a dance band, too! Good music, for sure.

  • You scat like a real cooool cat! I dig this song so much!!!

How about "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You"?

  • Thanks, nope.

  • Parts of the chord sequence sound like 'Til There Was You

Whatever you based it on, it's beautiful and I love your voice.

  • Thanks, but that's not the tune.

  • Is it Mmmmmbop? Nah, I don't have a clue but it sounds real good - as usual!

  • Thanks, and it'd def not mmmmbop

  • Are you sure?

  • Maybe it was! I definitely hear the connection.

  • "Blue Moon"

  • nope...

  • no, but that's a good tune.

  • Not sure what song but keep on singing.

Oh, maybe The Nearness of You?

  • hmmm...

  • I don't know the answer, but your song sounds great. And it makes me want to learn "I Get a Kick Out of You".

  • That is a sweet tune.

  • Ooh! Ooh! I got it! It's "Take Five."

    :-P

  • hee hee, no! guess again??

  • i have no idea what the answer is. your voice is simply amazing.

  • Thanks! I think it might come to you. The lyrics have the same message, too.

  • incredible vocals. so smooth.

  • Thank you!
