Make fun of this trick all y'all want, but bassist Stanley Clark did this with his bass strings and so does Marcus Miller. And a slew of other players who especially play flatwounds. It doesn't make them any more rusty than the sweat from your hands would make them over time. It's not a very common trick and has been debated, but then again so has the whole don't take all your strings off at once or you'll warp your guitar neck arguement.
I haven't boiled new strings yet, but it does help revive the life of old ones. Grow up dumb assholes, no ones making you do it and its not like its costing you any money. If I get n extra decent push out of some old strings hey, saves me $9.
I heard about this for over 20 years...had to see if anyone had an opinion and sure enough.
I think they way I heard it was if you're too cheap to buy new ones or live in the arctic and can't find your snowshoes you boil the old ones to get them back in shape.
Will have to try this sometime. Worn strings actually vibrate irregularly and poop out. You can see this with the naked eye.
On My bass i change the strings every 6 months. Each time i get new strings i always tune them a whole step up from standard tuning. Then leave them overnight like that. Next morning tune them in standard and they're good to go. that's how i break em in.
and i usually boil them when they're about 3 months old to get all that gunk and stuff out. Then i boil them again at the 6th month, remove them and then i have myself a good set of backup strings and make way for the new ones. use a blowdryer to dry the strings. :)
I gotta tell you, every video from 'expert village' that I've seen, the so called 'expert' is so full of shit he could float away. I mean, boiling? Really? EVERYONE else on the planet recommends that you simply tug on new strings a few times to get the same results this joker claims you can get from boiling the stings. Google 'google boil guitar strings' and see what you find. This guy's got some weird misconceptions, just like all the numbskulls at 'expert' village I've seen.
I know that Eddie Van Halen always boils his strings, but he also only uses them one night, and then changes them the next day, and so there is no time for them to rust.
I have boiled "OLD" Bass strings in water and White Vinager, its a really old trick, but has to do with cleaning the Gunk off of them and retempering them i never boiled regular guitar strings.
Can you boil the whole guitar? How do I peel the paint after I boil it? Can I just say "screw it!" and jump in the boiling water so I can play like Steve Vai? On Fireeeeeeeeeeee!
lol faggot. stop 'purporting'. your op was a bitch (no substance, not productive) post a counter-argument next time or go flex your ego somewhere else you disoriented subhuman.
this advice is just plain stupid, but consistent with the quality of teaching on all 'expert village' videos. Every one i've seen from expert village is actually the village idiot.
i love it when people respond like you, it's so funny. gee i didn't know it was a pre-requisite to have made a 'helpful' video before you can comment on the stupidity of someone elses video who's purporting to be an 'expert'. But your childish little tantrum did bring a smile to my face, thanks for the entertainment.
this is a step that isnt needed. i never boil my strings and a lot of people dont and they stay in tune just fine. if you string your guitar properly and stretch them, you shouldnt have many problems.
any tips on how to make guitar strings last longer?
because my strings start to rust very soon after i put them they dont even last more than 3 weeks without a sing of rust but its mostly the G B and high E string
ive had my string for like half a year and they havent rusted. ernie ball super slinkies :D and i do play every day. cuz the oils secreted from my fingers and hand keep them lubed.
hey free vid and I think you can boil em to re-use them too, not sure. Thank's for the video.

Thats a good point!!,
I'd never boild my strings and i feel like a noob but wha about the rust?...
adirl17 2 years ago
nickel doesn't rust. Neither does stainless steel. That's what most strings are made of.
At the most, they get discolored.
I wouldn't bother boiling guitar strings. Bass strings are a whole different monster though

So I don't know, maybe the will, maybe not.

I'm sure coated strings weren't designed for pre-boiling! Gimmics aren't always what they seem...no Elixir or D/R Strings in the boiler!

Yigo91193 3 years ago
clean them after every rehearsal and gig, the average string life should be around a month or so depending on how much you play.
Dogo10 3 years ago
clean how with a wet cloth or dry one? cuz with a wet one i beleive theyll rust
Yigo91193 3 years ago
clean each string w/ a dry cloth. some people use a lil bit of alcohol but thats not necessary.
