This was very helpful. Reading was just not working, I am a visual learner anyways. You took your time and gave precise instruction and repeated the process many times. I hate using DP needles and now I may be able to throw mine away. When knitting in the round I take the stitch from the left needle, move it to the right needle and then take the second stitch on the right needle and slip over the first stitch and onto the left needle. This closes the loop and makes for a clean closure.
@kglandfair I'm so glad you liked the video! It is my passion to teach the whole world Magic Loop. I would love for you to come visit knitfreedom (dot) com and sign up for the newsletter - there are a bunch of exclusive tips and videos, and more Magic Loop videos. Thanks for commenting!
Hi! I love your videos because you are very easy to understand. I've learned a lot from them. But how do you keep that first join from ending up with a ladder? You can always tell where my knitting started because of this and I was hoping that you would address this (that's why I went to you when I started looking for help) :-)
@Sqbrt Thank you! Usually any ladder at the beginning will close up as soon as you do a few rounds. You can also use your tail when you weave it in to help close any gaps. I also have a video that teaches how to avoid laddering in general - search my YouTube channel for "gaps" and you will find the video. Let me know if this helps!
@LiatMGat my circle looks diseased >.< i dont even know if its joined up properly or not...it doesnt look like yours. i think its prob just a huge ladder i dont know
I just couldn't learn this for some reason but last night I watched this video and I practiced! You made me understand it! Now I know how to do it and can not believe I was having trouble. Thank you so much! I used Susan Bates Velocity 29" circs. No problem these needles are great for magic loop because the cable is so flexible. I'm glad I bought them when they were on sale! Thank you so much for this video!
@Melatina77 That's so wonderful! I am so glad that I could help you figure out Magic Loop. :) It's great once you get the hang of it, isn't it? Keep up the great work! You can find other videos on Magic Loop if you visit knitfreedom (dot) com , too! Enjoy!
@feralgyrl No, I forgot to say it! Haha, not many people catch that. :) If you pull that first stitch tight, you will have a terrible time getting back into ready position when it's time. This is because the cable is thinner than the needle, so you actually can pull the stitch so that it's smaller than the needle - bad news when it's time to push the stitches back on. ;) Try it and you'll see what I mean. :)
i don't get it...why does it matter if the yarn is behind that needle? does this seem weird to me because i don't knit with the same method you do (i forget what it's called, one of them is continental, one is the other one....i knit the way everyone says is slower).
@janedoe4221 You knit American style :) It matters that the yarn is behind the needle because you are knitting (not purling), and for knitting, the working yarn needs to be behind the needles. This is the same for both styles. I have another Magic Loop video that demonstrates American Style - just search my channel for Magic Loop Basic and you will find it :)
@LiatMGat aw man, seriously? i think i just knit wrong. i looked at your other one, and that doesn't look like what i do either. i hold the yarn in my right hand....ugh, that's what i get from learning to knit from a children's instruction book, lol. either way, this makes sense, and i am pretty sure i'll be able to make it work for me. thanks!!
ps. can I make baby hats with this method? how does decreasing work with this? could you make a video to show that? or just come to my house and show me? haha THX :)
@stephaniebuzzella1 Thank you so much for the compliments! The Magic Loop e-book can show you how to do all of the things that you've requested. And you will be fine; you won't get any ladders. :) The Magic Loop e-book covers decreases and has a practice hat pattern included. The video e-book is even better than me coming to your house, because you can watch the videos over and over! Check out KNITFreedom (dot) com / classes / magic-loop for the Magic Loop course.
@stephaniebuzzella1 Also, the KNITFreedom forum can give you all the support that you need. You can find it at ravelry (dot) com / groups / knitfreedom . I think you're absolutely ready for the video class and that you'll love it!
I love this video because you're very casual about it ( if that doesn't sound weird haha ) BUT I am worried about laddering ....I think maybe I can make it happen even with this method :/ I really need to take a class!

@polkadotskull It's just a little too short. Not enough room for the little loops to stick out. :( I'm sorry! You need at least 36 inches, but I prefer 40 or even 47 inches.
This looks like a CURE to a headache to me. Thanks for a really good, easy to follow magic loop video...I was afraid of ladders but you cleared that up in the end. Great job!
@spiritlol1 Hahaha I think that is the most popular part of this video! Seriously, a lot of enjoying knitting is being able to just "Whatever" once in a while. Thanks for watching! :)
@spongebia06 If you want to knit two-at-a-time socks or sleeves, it's a technique worth looking into! It's really a powerful technique once you get the hang of it. You certainly don't have to do it, however! :)
Hi this is a really good video!, Im living in the uk and knit with the woking yarn in my right hand, oposite to you. can this method work for me too? if so can you direct me to a video or instructions on how to do it? thank you very much!! :) x
@MamaPalma Heck yes! It's so easy! Search my channel for "Travelling Loop" and you'll learn the trick to doing knitting in the round on Magic Loop with a large garment. To perfect your Magic Loop skills, visit knitfreedom (dot) com / classes / magic - loop
I tried this method again yesterday, and could get the needles in the correct position, but there was so much tension from the cable wanting to pull apart the foundation stitches, that it created tight stitches and I couldn't slide the stitches off the needles. I'm having a really difficult time and will probably just invest in another set of 16" circular needles for the new project I'm working on. It's easier than fumbling with DPNs or trying magic loop knitting.
@gypsyqueen64 Hi gypsyqueen! Don't give up! I have a video that will help you! You can search my youtube channel for "gap" and it will appear. I'll also private message you with the link
@LiatMGat - Thanks for trying to help, but I fumbled around with DPNs several times yesterday and began to find a good method for handling those. After casting on and taking out several foundation rows, I finally got the hang of those DPNs and decided to use those instead of attempting the magic loop method for the umm...30th time.
That's great for starting a project, but what about finishing a project? I have to finish the top of a hat that was knitted in the round and I don't always have double pointed needles in the right size, so it would be nice to know how to do a magic loop method with finishing off a project without having to turn it around and reverse knit it on the DPNs.
@gypsyqueen64 You can easily use Magic Loop to decrease the top of a hat - it's how I do all my hats. Just start decreasing while you're doing Magic Loop! I have a complete Magic Loop video tutorial here: knitfreedom . com / classes / magic - loop (remove the spaces). I hope this helps!
I really like your little tutorial on the magic loop! It helped me understand it a little better! I can hardly wait to use it on my next project! Thanks :)
I was not able to control the work the way you did. Is there any easy way to become comfortable with the needle and the yarn in your hand? I do alright until I try to join. It seems that the work on the yarn side is in my right hand and I tried t knit into the back of the row to join with the yarn and the tail. Are there any easier instructions outlining how to control with two sides of the needle?
@llm285306 I have a complete Magic Loop video course at knitfreedom (dot) com/classes/magic-loop. You can also post your question in the KNITFreedom forum (knitfreedom (dot) com/forum) and we can try to help you. I would need you to describe the problem a little more, and the forum is a great place to do that.
Thank you, Thank you!! I'm trying to move beyond the basic scarf, and a friend, an excellent knitter, said i should try circular needles and knitting in the round. She said I'd never go back to straight needles once I got the hang of circs. She gave me a quick demo of the magic loop method today, but i needed to see it several more times to get the hang of it. Your video is GREAT!! The way you demonstrate doing half a round, then turning the work and starting again just makes so much sense.
@RSullivanSC Thank you so much! I'm delighted that you like the video! Keep in touch with KNITFreedom - I am coming out with more videos and video e-books all the time! knitfreedom (dot) com/newsletter
This has to be best video on the magic loop. It helped me get over my fear of the magic loop. I had tried it so many times and could never get it right. I am making a hat using this method . I had one question though. The stitches which are split look stretched compared to the other stitches. How can i avoid this?
@such80islife Thank you! You can take a full course at knitfreedom (dot) com/classes/magic-loop. To answer your question, search my YouTube channel for "Pulling 1st Stitch Too Tight on Magic Loop" (I can't link to it here) - let me know if that helps!
I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not but here goes:
I'm knitting hats using the magic loop. Do I continue to split up the stitches for the entire hat or does it reach a point where I can just knit in a circle?
@alovehangoverr This isn't a dumb question! On your hat, you will probably keep the stitches split up the whole time. If you are using a 40-inch long needle, you will not be knitting in a straight circle unless your hat is 40 inches around, which I doubt.
You can modify the technique to use only one loop if that feels more natural.
Thank you! I had learned this a couple of years ago, and thought I remembered but couldn't. This video helped me instantly adding sleeves that I didn't have the right size DPNs for! Great video!
super clear instructions, to the point, good volume. couldn't ask for more! Thanks for the awesome tutorial on magic loop! I always wondered what it was and how it worked... now I know =)
Thank you for the video. I now understand the basic concept of the method and will go check out your site for more. However, I have to tell you that I got something more out of your video. I finally understand why I seemed to be working inside out when I knit in the round. You mentioned (several time - which I needed to hear) that you hold the needle with the working yarn in the back. I was holding it in the front! Good grief! I just needed a simple change to correct the problem. Thanks.
Really nice and clear explanations and terminology - I am thankful to have found this and am starting some mittens today using this method - thanks again!
Excellent video, I have been knitting for many many years and have never seen such a thing, I am someone that does not like DPs due to hand cramping, this would fix that.
You did a wonderful job on this video, very detailed and precise, I did not notice any anxiety at all.
Thank you I need to make many baby hats and I will use this method and top down knit which I love.
u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murdered in 1945. her body was not fund until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos 30 minutes the dead girl will appear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you.
Thanks! i am a long time knitter but have never tried this technique. Will do two sleeves for my grandson's sweater right now. Will let you know how it goes ;)
@nmattern Thank you! I know you will like doing two-at-a-time. Just be careful: doing two-at-a-time requires using a special cast-on. You can find a video e-book for doing two-at-a-time on my website (of course I can't post a link in this comment but check my channel page) - just look for the video e-book on two socks at a time. Happy knitting!
@aileenonscene Lol I know! No one else has commented on that, but I noticed it right away when I watched this video after I posted it, and was like, "whoops!" SO anyway: I have another video answering this question. I can't put the link in this comment, but search my channel videos for "Pulling 1st Stitch Too Tight on Magic Loop" and you will see the answer revealed. Thanks for commenting!
I know that you said "no laddering", but I'm getting laddering every 1/2 round between the needle and the plastic cord. How (?), you say. I don't know, I say. I can assure you that the working yarn IS coming from behind the needle. If you figure it all out, PLEASE tell me the answer.
@Scoochy1956 -I have been knitting for YEARS. I think that is going to happen anyway you do it. Have you tried just using double pointed needles? That's what I do and it works great!
@whosails Thanks so much for getting the Magic Loop e-book! I hope it helps you become a superstar at knitting in the round. Let me know what you think!
@whosails Yay! I'm so glad you like it! There are so many benefits to knitting in the round this way - you'll keep discovering good things about it. I offer a full Magic Loop course on my blog if you are interested - it covers troubleshooting, converting regular patterns to Magic Loop, common mistakes, and a few challenges (see the video description for the link). Thanks for watching! -Liat
@Sassamous Hi, thanks for checking out my video on Magic Loop! I'm sorry it wasn't what you were hoping for. I agree that Magic Loop is an intermediate technique for knitting in the round, not something I would teach to a beginner. Beginners should start with knitting scarves so they can get the hang of tension, casting on, and the knit and purl stitches.
I do have a free video knitting dictionary available on my blog for beginners, if you are interested in checking it out.
I really enjoy listening to you - you're very relaxed and matter-of-fact and you have a great voice. I've looked at quite a few tutorials (from others) and I like yours the best. After crocheting for a long while, I'm just getting my knitting bearings again and have learned a lot of great tricks from you. Keep it up:-) See you on Ravelry!
@StarrZing Wow, thanks so much! I'm SO glad my tutorials have helped you. It's what I love to do! I have posted some full video tutorial e-books on my blog: Mastering Magic Loop, Knitting Toe-Up Socks, How to Knit Faster, and more. Let me know what else you'd like to learn! -Liat
I am brand new to learning everything about knitting. I think I bought the wrong kind of circular needles, being too short a cable. But, I didn't know at the time!
I've watched many videos and especially enjoy yours and the way you explain it all !
My hopes are to someday make simple doll clothes for tiny Ball jointed dolls, and maybe socks or fingerless gloves ( victorian style) for myself & kids <3
@KimberleyAnne Thanks for your comment! Yes, absolutely do your glove fingers on magic loop - you never have to use DPNs again! Just don't throw them all away - they are useful for making I-cords. :)
I've never knit anything in the round before, and the pattern for gloves I'd like to make says to use dpns, although that looks way too fiddly. Do you think if I just used this method instead but with the same pattern that would work out?
your video was just what i was looking for. I cant knit anything recognizable with DPN's. I'm gonna try this like today! thanks so much! Your video was awesome
I'm knitting! I'm using the Continental method, maybe that's what's confusing you. There are lots of videos on Continental knitting on youtube, if you are interested in learning more. It's very fast, and, for me, more ergonomic. But it doesn't really matter - magic loop works for purling, too!
@leftstriker Oh no! Here's what I would do: when you are starting your first stitch, hold the cable behind (with the last stitch on it) close to the first stitch, so you are not stretching and stressing the yarn or the last stitch. Do two stitches, and then snug them both up. This wil prevent the last stitch from being pulled so tight you can't get your needle back in. Tell me how this works! Thanks.
Love the magic loop method. I have used this for socks, mittens and a Christmas stocking! Magic loop works on needles as small as 24 as well; I use that length frequently and prefer that length actually. Less cable screw with!
Thank you so so much I've watched so many video's in the past few weeks trying to learn how to do this with no luck, and got this one in the first try. You're an amazing teacher :)
Thanks for this video: very clear and straight-forward, and exactly what I needed to learn how to knit in the round. Wish me luck - I'm about to dive into a lot more patterns!
umm love the video could u please make a tutorial for socks um but not too hard-to-do ones just plain simple-to-do ones that doesnt use too much coloured yarn or maybe even just white yarn? thnx
umm.... a very easy, simple sock from start to finnish? im new to knitting. I have made scarves and a few other things.I also make hats on the loom, but id thought id give socks a try. they would make the perfect gift for my boyfriend. Is it possible to do it on only one loop neddle? so i don't have to buy 2...
I think it would be too time-consuming to make a video on socks, but I am writing up a pattern for VERY simple, quick socks for an upcoming class I am teaching, which will include photographs and maybe a video or two for the hard parts. If you subscribe to my videos then you will know when it becomes available. It will be less than a month. Oh, and you can totally do any sock on one needle, just like in the video. So you don't have to buy two.
Thank you so much, you have really being very helpful

I would need you to describe the problem a little more, and the forum is a great place to do that.

Thank you, Thank you!! I'm trying to move beyond the basic scarf, and a friend, an excellent knitter, said i should try circular needles and knitting in the round. She said I'd never go back to straight needles once I got the hang of circs. She gave me a quick demo of the magic loop method today, but i needed to see it several more times to get the hang of it. Your video is GREAT!! The way you demonstrate doing half a round, then turning the work and starting again just makes so much sense.

This has to be best video on the magic loop. It helped me get over my fear of the magic loop. I had tried it so many times and could never get it right. I am making a hat using this method . I had one question though. The stitches which are split look stretched compared to the other stitches. How can i avoid this?
such80islife 1 year ago
@such80islife Thank you! You can take a full course at knitfreedom (dot) com/classes/magic-loop. To answer your question, search my YouTube channel for "Pulling 1st Stitch Too Tight on Magic Loop" (I can't link to it here) - let me know if that helps!
LiatMGat 1 year ago
I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not but here goes:
I'm knitting hats using the magic loop. Do I continue to split up the stitches for the entire hat or does it reach a point where I can just knit in a circle?
alovehangoverr 1 year ago

I always wondered what it was and how it worked... now I know =)
sewinghippie 1 year ago
Thank you for the video. I now understand the basic concept of the method and will go check out your site for more. However, I have to tell you that I got something more out of your video. I finally understand why I seemed to be working inside out when I knit in the round. You mentioned (several time - which I needed to hear) that you hold the needle with the working yarn in the back. I was holding it in the front! Good grief! I just needed a simple change to correct the problem. Thanks.

Will let you know how it goes ;)
nmattern 1 year ago
@nmattern Thank you! I know you will like doing two-at-a-time. Just be careful: doing two-at-a-time requires using a special cast-on. You can find a video e-book for doing two-at-a-time on my website (of course I can't post a link in this comment but check my channel page) - just look for the video e-book on two socks at a time. Happy knitting!

~ I was waiting for you to tell me why you didn't tighten your first stitch like you said you'd tell us.........
aileenonscene 1 year ago

Scoochy1956 1 year ago
@Scoochy1956 -I have been knitting for YEARS. I think that is going to happen anyway you do it. Have you tried just using double pointed needles? That's what I do and it works great!

@whosails Thanks so much for getting the Magic Loop e-book! I hope it helps you become a superstar at knitting in the round. Let me know what you think!
LiatMGat 1 year ago
@whosails Yay! I'm so glad you like it! There are so many benefits to knitting in the round this way - you'll keep discovering good things about it. I offer a full Magic Loop course on my blog if you are interested - it covers troubleshooting, converting regular patterns to Magic Loop, common mistakes, and a few challenges (see the video description for the link). Thanks for watching! -Liat

This video may be fine for anyone that already knows how to knit, but it definitely isn't for beginners.
Sassamous 1 year ago

@laddybug3 Did the video refresh your memory?
LiatMGat 1 year ago
I got use to using DPNs that I forgot how to use the magic loop method
laddybug3 1 year ago
@KimberleyAnne Thanks for your comment! Yes, absolutely do your glove fingers on magic loop - you never have to use DPNs again! Just don't throw them all away - they are useful for making I-cords. :)
LiatMGat 1 year ago
So helpful, thanks! :)
I've never knit anything in the round before, and the pattern for gloves I'd like to make says to use dpns, although that looks way too fiddly. Do you think if I just used this method instead but with the same pattern that would work out?
KimberleyAnne 1 year ago
your video was just what i was looking for. I cant knit anything recognizable with DPN's. I'm gonna try this like today! thanks so much! Your video was awesome

Am I confused or does this video show her purling and not knitting? If it doesn't, I need help! :(
bobpa215 2 years ago
I'm knitting! I'm using the Continental method, maybe that's what's confusing you. There are lots of videos on Continental knitting on youtube, if you are interested in learning more. It's very fast, and, for me, more ergonomic. But it doesn't really matter - magic loop works for purling, too!
LiatMGat 2 years ago
I get a ladder in between my first and last stitch. What should I do? please help me
leftstriker 1 year ago
@leftstriker Oh no! Here's what I would do: when you are starting your first stitch, hold the cable behind (with the last stitch on it) close to the first stitch, so you are not stretching and stressing the yarn or the last stitch. Do two stitches, and then snug them both up. This wil prevent the last stitch from being pulled so tight you can't get your needle back in. Tell me how this works! Thanks.
LiatMGat 1 year ago
Love the magic loop method. I have used this for socks, mittens and a Christmas stocking! Magic loop works on needles as small as 24 as well; I use that length frequently and prefer that length actually. Less cable screw with!

that yarn is bootiful. what weight is it? x

Thanks! It's Malabrigo chunky. I love it! Very inexpensive, too.
LiatMGat 2 years ago
Is this the same as using two circulars?
miabnny 2 years ago
Pretty much only you only have to buy one, and the needle-ends aren't dangling down clanking each other being a distraction!
LiatMGat 2 years ago

Is it possible to do it on only one loop neddle? so i don't have to buy 2...
girliegirlzoo 3 years ago
I think it would be too time-consuming to make a video on socks, but I am writing up a pattern for VERY simple, quick socks for an upcoming class I am teaching, which will include photographs and maybe a video or two for the hard parts. If you subscribe to my videos then you will know when it becomes available. It will be less than a month. Oh, and you can totally do any sock on one needle, just like in the video. So you don't have to buy two.
LiatMGat 3 years ago
your a great teacher! very clear. I understand!!! i think I will try thins for myself. and check out your other videos. do you have a sock tutorial?
girliegirlzoo 3 years ago
Thank you! What specifically would you be interested in for a sock tutorial? I love to teach socks and so I would totally make a video.
